Episode 290 of Mike Finnegan's Garage has something for everyone. First off, I had to take care of the shifter in my 1970 Datsun 510 because every time I reached for Second Gear, the shifter punched the dashboard and I smashed my knuckles. I ended up fixing it with fire! Then, I pulled my 13,000 original mile 1998 GMC Sierra short bed truck into the garage to measure it for new wheels and tires and a better suspension. Finally, I headed to Lithia Springs Ford to test drive two different 2024 Ford F250 Superduty trucks while towing my 28 foot ATC RoM 550 trailer. Not a lot of dealers will let the customer hook up their race trailer to a truck like that just for a test drive but I was determined to find out which was going to work better for my needs; the 7.3L Godzilla gas engine or the 6.7L high-output diesel engine.

As a Ford dealer technician, the powerstroke MPH limit is due to either break-in or transport mode or the mykey function is programmed with the key your using that programmed to limit vehicle speed. Both can be removed to raise speed.

Makes sense, I was thinking it was possibly in regen. God knows the weird sh*t my 6.4 would do for no apparent reason, especially during regen...well, that's when it didn't cut power by 90% during a freeway merge towing my 18 foot work trailer because some menial sensor took a crap...or it had me on the side of the road draining diesel from the separator for the 4th time in 5 minutes because it wouldn't drive and kept saying "drain water separator". etc etc I had more trouble with my 2010 6.4 for the 104K miles I babied it, it was damn near criminal. A couple months after I paid it off, the turbo's let go, the engine ate metal...mechanical salvage. Worst purchase ever.

Mike, there's a round rubber boot missing over your shifter mechanism. It keeps grit from getting down into the ball cup, and farther into the mechanism. If the dirt remains, it will wear out the keyways that control the left/right action, and you could eventually lose the ability to access reverse. (ask me how I know this) I suggest you find part# 32862-E9300

As a long term owner of both a 6.7 and a 23 with the 7.3 gas. I'd never own another diesel after having the 7.3. The 7.3 does everything my 6.7 did at a fraction of the costs. Diesel= better MPG but more expensive fuel and significantly higher maintenance costs. Gas= slightly lower MPG but cheapee fuel and way lower maintenance costs. It never pencils out that the diesel is better unless you tow 90+% of the time. The 7.3 with 4.30 gears is an animal.

I haven't bought a new off the lot vehicle since I started driving at 14 and don't ever plan to, so what that's worth to you before I start this rant! LOL I'm just a person and this is just my humble opinion as it were. They (as in the gov enviro non mentalists) have been on the road of trying to kill diesel dead for a while now with emissions and regulations and pricing diesel fuel completely out of the market but they really want it off the table for the average consumer. Remember the days a work horse truck that was going to be nothing but abused it was a no brainer to get a diesel. Cheaper easier to work on. (Way before emissions 💩and 3 or 4 different radiators electric ignition and pumps and wiring and hoses and computers with all the extra spaghetti for all the advanced tech was all ever a thing of course.) Much cheaper fuel than unleaded back then and it was just that a workhorse. Straight hauler? You needed diesel all the way. Cold weather high water go near anywhere and get the job done. Military uses the KISS method. Diesel. But everything I am talking about was back in the days when a "Truck" was not the average cushy 4 door family highway wagon with way too many cup holders and a luxury car price tag to go with it though. Back to the present. They have really been forcing the motor corps to jump through more and more flaming hoops to produce diesels these last few years and that only appears to be ramping up. All which adds up to higher prices all the way around. Ford just seems to have wholeheartedly embraced the mentality of screw it if your willing to pay the crazy money to have the diesel then you can afford to fix it with the poor R&D engineering flaws we left in. We don't care! Enjoy!!! So they will sell them till they aren't allowed any longer and to hell with trying to make them good or even make them a viable option that makes sense anymore. Because there are still enough people to milk who still just want the option and are willing to pay crazy money for it. Some people need it. Not many. Not enough. And who needs the added headaches, expenses and complete disregard by the dealership when things do go wrong??? Not the average consumer. Not these days. It just doesn't add up.

Hey Finnegan, if you decide to buy a Ford super duty as your next truck. If you get the 6.7 diesel just make sure to take a note that the High pressure fuel pump in those are super sensitive to Fuel contamination, or loss of fuel pressure. And when the pump goes it takes out the Injectors with it and sends metal all the way back to the tank. There is an aftermarket Filter available to prevent metal going into the rest of the lines. Just something to keep in mind since your shopping around.

I'm going on a limb here but if he buys it brand new then he isn't going to need to worry about that.... I know in the past that Ford didn't want to cover it under warranty but you know just as well as I that HE won't ever have to deal with anything like that....... But pretty sure that's no longer an issue with anyone by now though but either way, the rules don't apply to him. Just do the maintenance, yes there's been failure's HOWEVER there is tenfold more that haven't been any issue at all. There really is no definitive cause but there's a lot of different opinions out there being passed off as facts.... Welcome to the age where misinformation and worse yet, disinformation is thriving! IMO I think there was a defective batch that was hit or miss and it's been over exaggerated (just like the 6.0 tainted reputation) 95% of the problems you hear are from people who don't even have any first hand knowledge nor actual experience with the product and since everyone ALWAYS does their due diligence and research before they say anything to anyone........... (Of course that wasn't sarcasm at all....nope....) Not to mention if he were to keep it past warranty, I'm sure he will do a "colab" with a shop that will certainly address the cp4 issue.

Whichever truck you decide on another towing upgrade is adding a good wireless rear view camera to the back of your trailer. After towing my enclosed car hauler for years without one adding this to my rig is life changing. It’s much safer being able to see what all the knucklehead drivers are doing in the lanes behind you. And, such a help when backing up the trailer.

The 6.7 is my fav diesel motor ever, they haul ass. Even my 2011. They just get up and go. If you do get one I would HIGHLY recommend you put a S&S disaster prevention kit on it as these trucks still use the Bosch cp4.2 and all it takes is one bad tank of fuel, wreck the entire fuel system. Filter kit will catch all the debris. This goes for the standard output and the high output. 1 point also taken into consideration between the standard output and high output, the high output trucks use a lot more def standard output trucks, standard output is still like 450 horse and 1050 torque

gas vs diesel. I'm sorry to say, as a diesel mechanic, I wouldn't touch a diesel truck made since 2008 with a 10 foot pole. I routinely see bone stock diesels come apart under 200,000 miles. By the time you factor in the additional purchase price, extra cost of maintenance, def, additional cost of fuel per gallon, the batshit high cost of repairs, it doesn't work. Many companies are now running away from diesels are going back to gas engines on medium duty trucks.

Thank you for this. Was always curious and have wanted to do this test myself. I can't believe they actually allowed you to hook up a fully loaded trailer on a test drive. I am super impressed. I'll be honest I have never had a good experience with a Ford dealer and I have been in several all across Georgia. Last time I was in one I had to call the cops, they took my car and wouldn't give it back and they sold the car I wanted and tried to upsell me another one after I called to reserve one and drove 2 hours across town to get it. Once the manager realized I had 911 on the phone and was filling out a stolen vehicle report and asking for officer assistance on site, they finally came to their senses. I will never go to a Ford dealership ever again (too many bad experiences with dealership repairs and lemon law vehicles) but this dealer seemed to be pretty cool with you. I'm guessing your expensive and fully loaded trailer plus a large camera crew gave them the peace of mind to let you do this.

I did HVAC/Mechanical work for 35 yrs. Channel Locks were the best. Last ten years they have turned to sheet. Jaws are nowhere near as hard or durable as they once were. Like Craftsman rachets. Got some circa 70-80 s ones that are solid. Free replacement ones are dog sheet.

This was a great video! I was super excited to see that your considering a Ford. I’m in the market for a 24 myself. I’ve been doing my research and it actually might be worth your while to consider a Platinum over a Lariat. There’s not much of a price difference if you get a highly optioned Lariat some times you can be money ahead depending on how it’s specked out.

You would do well to get either of those trucks. For towing, I would say "6.7 diesel" for driving, I would say "7.3 gasser". With that said, get you a nice F250 with the 6.7 high output like you were driving. You can configure it how you want you just have to find it. Nothing will do better and treat you nicer!

Just got a 350 diesel Lariat last week, one and a half door (supercab?) Had to special order it. The price once you fill it back up with the important mechanical things of a Platinum four door for example is still 20K cheaper 90k with virtually all options, and has basically all the same stuff, winch, lockers, HO, all the electronics upgrades. Still plenty of room in the rear seats for small adults and a dog. That diesel is amazing and the size and weight of that truck just makes if smooth as can be for a daily, floats down the highway effortlessly. One negative of that 350 and probably 250 as well ( I think regardless of Tremor) the rear springs and perhaps front as well, are so stiff it doesn't like ripples in the pavement bad broken up roads, it has a little resonance and gets bumpy, but on normal roads no problem. You could replace the suspension with a Carli E-Venture magnetic shocks basically for a variable function, higher leaf string count like 12 vs 6, and different sway bars, and has a soft daily, or hard for towing, but thats another 10K or so in parts, I'm holding off, Im very happy with it as is for now and maybe long term. Overall, amazing luxury and power in these Superduty HO Diesels, and try the optioned Lariat supercab 1 1/2 doors for the price problem. BTW took exactly three months from order to at the dealer

I have a 2022 F250 4x4 with the 7.3. I pulled a 33 ft toy hauler from CA to TX. I am pleased with it. (you may have seen it at the meet and greet a couple weeks ago.) I went with the gas engine rather than diesel because of cost to buy and cost to maintain compared to the diesel which is far more expensive. If towing 10% of the time, the gas engine is best for me. Regarding the trailer settings on the truck, enter the length of the trailer and save the data. This will allow it to accurately tell you if there is a vehicle in the blind spot, supposedly. I am very happy with my gas engine F250. I did put a set of Rough Country air bags on it to level it out a bit which helps a lot.

We even have a small trailer it pulls no problem. v6 non turbo is plenty happy and when she gets bogged we will add a super charger! but small and capable truck on and off the trails! tundra was just too big, especialy with tires, small lift and other bits to make it equally capable as the tacoma...

My friend bought it new in 1973 and GAVE it to me back in 1998 (after it sat for 16 years). Datsun competition suspension, dual SU's - 1800 engine, Mac Tilton prepared short block, Racer Brown cam/SSS head, Libre wheels, flared wheel openings. Back in the 70's it was an Autocross car used as a daily driver. Years ago I tried to put a 5 speed in but bought an incorrect trans that tilted the wrong way. It was a NAPZ something issue. Getting old and can't remember.
