Fun Fact: The phrase “mad as a hatter” is derived from the fact that hat makers were constantly exposed to large amounts of mercury for the creation of hats back in the day. Chronic mercury toxicity can cause serious mental illness in sufferers, thus the phrase “mad as a hatter” (and of course, the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland) was born.

People not artist and especially people not working with mixing and thinning actual pigments tend not to understand that this kind of content isn't really about a *colour* (as plenty say, with numeric painting you *could* replicate a specific hue), but more about the paint: How it reflects off the paper, the diversity between the highly and lowly pigmented areas, how the brush stroke makes it interact... Rae actually does a good job by showing how modern dupes (of the hue, not of the paint) act differently, less rich, although it could benefit from her making sure to exclusively say "paint" rather than "colour". But I'm splitting hair.

Different color theories suggest different hypothetical colors that humans are incapable of seeing for one reason or another, and fictional colors are routinely created in popular culture. While some such colors have no basis in reality, phenomena such as cone cell fatigue enable colors to be perceived in certain circumstances that would not be otherwise. If you look at magenta long enough then remove it and look into a white surface, you will see a sea green color that appears!

I absolutely love these ancient, obsolete, toxic colors. There are no synthetics that truly duplicate them. One of my favorites is Gamboge Yellow. And lead white, when you make watercolor or gouache from it, is unlike any other water-based white on teh market--it is buttery, wonderful to work with, and covers like no other white pigment. . Another "lost to time" color is Quinachridone Gold. The pigment was originally made for automotive paint, and was popular for appliances in the 1960s, but nobody makes the base pigment anymore because that mustard orange-yellow color is no longer in fashion for appliances and cars, and the "artist market" isn't large enough to keep the pigment in production. Many manufacturers have made synthetic versions of it since it became available about a decade ago, but none of them are really true to the original...

k, but digital art can't bring across the multi-hue depth that certain paints (pthalo paints are a great example) can bring across. With a tangible painting, the way the light hits it adds a different dimension to it. With a digital painting, the way the light hits it can make it harder to see.

for manganese blue hue i can recommend you look at watercolors - DaVinci and QOR do nice hues and DaVinci's (at least when I bought my tube of it) still had the actual manganese blue pigment in it (in mixture with I think phthalo blue). A lot are just phthalo blue with titanium white mixtures and don't give that green glow that real manganese blue has and the winsor & newton oil color in your video reminds me more like they used cobalt blue though it's probably just more white. Green leaning blues are my absolute favorite color :)

Genuine manganese blue is still available in the UK. I have a watercolour made with it and the real colour is a lot closer to the commercial hue version than the one the artist created.
