Excellent video my friend. My only suggestion for using the katana is not to use excessive force. The right hand is your control and your left hand is your downward force power pushing down on the handle (“tsuba”) and creating an arc. When cutting, aim for precision and accuracy and to hear a “whoosh!”sound in a mid-air cut.

the exact same thing applies to the longsword. I had to stop watching because i couldn't bear seeing a sword used like a fucking club.
@PaulHofreiter7 ай бұрын
After scrolling down a bunch, I am shocked that I didn’t find a sword nerd comment. So, that is a Longsword and not a claymore and while the katana cuts more effortlessly without technique (katanas are very forgiving), a Longsword depends a lot more on edge alignment. Yours is more of a piercing blade profile as well so will be even harder to cut well with compared to a flatter blade profile (look at Aragorn’s sword vs. yours for example). Loved the video.
@SunbroLuigi6 ай бұрын
Had to scroll way too far for this comment. I believe you to be completely correct, however he specifically called it a claymore and not a scottish claymore. According to wikipedia and whatever sources it uses, the claymore is a general term for scottish weapons, first primarily describing basket hilted swords. It could totally be that he just found a sword of scottish origin with the term claymore in its title and thus deduced that that is what a claymore looks like. Although its still finding excuses for misinformation. Its indeed a longsword, not the big, beautiful scottish claymore that I still desperately want.
@Sun-Tzu-6 ай бұрын
Not a claymore, but katanas are absolutely NOT forgiving with edge alignment. Not even just edge alignment, you need a perfect follow-through as well to perform the dragging slice motion, something you don't need to do with a straight sword.
@Kitty_kidnapper6 ай бұрын
I was going to point out that it was a long sword too lol
@PaulHofreiter5 ай бұрын
@@Sun-Tzu- both do benefit from technique/edge alignment, of course, but a katana will always have an advantage over many longsword Oakeshott blade profiles for a beginner swinging a sword, since many are piercing oriented or a hybrid (given the variance of blade geometry and cutting sweet spots) whereas katana excels in slashing/cutting. The blade of a longsword may also flex more while cutting a heavier target, which requires technique to control. The curved bade of a katana that is more stable during the cut, however, will be easier for a beginner to backyard cut with and give the appearance of it being more effective when both should cut equally well in a fai comparison. But you are right that it does take care with edge alignment and it is certainly not any easier to learn to use a katana well. especially since if a beginner were really to be off with their alignment they could bend the blade of a katana. It’s just that you will see many people picking up a katana and swinging it like a baseball bat cut more successfully than someone with a longsword, unless it is one of just a few blade profiles that are really catered toward cutting.

For the katana, your left hand is the one controling the force of the cut, while your right hand control the direction and stop the katana after a cut. Also, let the weight of your katana do the cut for you (like chopping wood), swing it too hard might leads to posture lost and create space for enemy to attack. This will also increase your attack and parry speed

hey do you know exactly why most traditional Katana are single edged. i feel like the weapons use as a whole would require a lot less restraint if the curve was slightly lessened and both side were sharp. The whole thing would probably be weaker (more prone to shatter or bend) but it would be cool and i doubt that any japanese artisan, smith etc would just NOT have the idea
@greglynas522 жыл бұрын
Yes let the sword do it’s thing as it’s natural weighting balance will cut it easily
@greglynas522 жыл бұрын
@@kasturimukherjee420 it’s actually curved to give natural weighting to easily cut almost anything go ahead look up a vid of dropping a katana headfirst on cardboard it cuts because it gives natural weight to its own cuts while with a normal sword it has balance on both sides not allowing it to use its own weight for a cut, making it way harder to control, so basically katanas are superior in almost every way to a normal sword. And like you said, yes it will make it more prone to bending and shattering. So if you wanted to know why there’s a curve on the katana that’s why( different metals being fused together also makes one side in a katana heavier, helping with the auto balancing)
@acertainredburnygirl52652 жыл бұрын
@@kasturimukherjee420 Like he said, katana is a weapon that mainly for cutting and focuses on speed to quickly defeat opponents, not for continuous sparring Fun fact: katana was meant to be used as a secondary weapon. In war, a samurai would rather use a yari, a naginata or even a bigger katana (odachi) as their main weapon. Katana only be used when there is no other option, in duels, in peace time or for decoration

I love the shuriken test for a few reasons, first you used it to get better accuracy for other similar weapons aka the two other weapons that required you to throw and that's what the shuriken is actually for. In the torpedo test that's not actually called a torpedo that is a Bo-Shuriken, the shuriken you used was effectively a trainer for that weapon, and you used it for it's intended purpose accidently by increasing your accuracy with the rope dart and the bo-shuriken.

If you didnt know you absouloutly MUST. Wipe your katana after every use. If you dont the acids and juices will slowly corrode and rust you katana,but you also have to reapply oils and clean your katan regulary. Same goes for the claymore, alongside that the claymore and katana are for different purposes, the katana is built for speed and slicing whereas the claymore is a sword built for high power but slower its also has better piercing but each are built for different purposes to put it into video game context the katana is a pure dps weapon whereas the long sword is a more balanced weapon fit for a tank . Just a couple of things from someone who has trained in both weapons for years.😅

The sword wasn't a claymore it was a longsword also called bastard sword, the last thing was also a shuriken. Shurikens are as deadly as Swords or Katanas, not because they cut deep but because they mostly are used with poison on their tips. The first shuriken is a "beginner shuriken" because it is easier to throw, and the second one is for advanced users.

Big issue here is I can tell the katana you're using isn't high quality hand crafted folded steel forged the traditional way - this is one of the main reasons behind the genius of how the katana can be so impossibly sharp, yet strong and accurate. For a katana like this you're looking at around $2-4K minimum! Disclaimer: I own a wakizashi and a katana hand forged by a master blacksmith from the 1600s in Edo Japan and combined they're around $20k! I know my shiz! :D Would love to see you use a sword like this next time 🤩
