So many memories of being forced to use it when I did filmmaking at university. I remember the lecturers threatening us that we will drop a grade in our first year project if we don't use avid. So I edited in premiere and photoshopped it into an avid timeline. Lecturers never said anything and I got an A.

Ah good ol' Avid Media Composer, I remember using it back in college and almost everyone in the editing class hated it at first. Like any program, it takes time to get used to using it. It's considered an industry standard because it's been around for ages, longer than most other softwares that other people use today. And all of the big name film and TV editors use it too. It's hard to get people to use other software when they've used it for their entire careers.
@dyzzolve

Yeah, it’s one of those things that’s almost purely a result of generational familiarity (and industry monopoly), not because it’s actually a great software. Once Adobe can figure out efficient, reliable multi editor systems, Avid will slowly dissolve away.

bro I'm convinced that these softwares are just so that when a director of a movie gets frustrated with the editor and looks at the software, they are just met with the biggest "you need that editor bc this is way too complicated".
@WDWelly
@WDWelly 3 күн бұрын
I simply don't understand the complexity of these softwares that the "industry" uses. That being said, the past year I have been using the Davinci Studio version as I have to color grade every project I create at work. It auto saves and never crashes...literally ever, at least for me. I won't ever go back to Premier or other unstable editing software that doesn't auto save. It makes a huge difference in quality of life.

I study film at uni, and im forced to use avid. I've been using it for a little over 2 years, and the software is still ass. Big conpanies use it not because it's a good or convenient editing software. They use it because it allows multiple editors to be working on the same project simultaneously. So dont get it twisted. Just because big companies use it doesn't mean it's any more powerful than something like premiere in terms of editing ability. When im finished my uni, im going straight back to premiere..

Same here. Avid is a pain in the ass. I always say that it takes away the magic to editing. You have to have a very specific (and simple) plan in mind. There’s no room for experimenting. Also, it’s insane that I had to go into premiere to make the credits. Not even a simple thing like that can be done (and I’m talking roll, not even the fancy stuff)

That said, not recommended for a solo editor or content creators 💀

Hey there, I noticed that u tried AVID, Maybe you get this thing in process, im writing this along with the video. 1, You can delete folders you need to right-click or press once on it and delete - don't click on the name. If it crashes there is a thing called Avid Attic, It is kinda hard process to get it back but it should take away like 15 minutes of work - depending on settings. Also in the keyboard setting, you could easily change it to PremiePro so a basic shortcut would work for you. In avid most of the time you're not splitting the clips, you basically take in point and out point then delete it(depends on key binds I got it on X) split is by default I think on H. Also a lot of the time, you have someone to do VFX, so you don't need to mask and animate in AVID it's almost impossible, not like in PP and AE. Anyway, good job in learning such a complex program in a short period.

8:28 - The Avid Attic backs up you bins. You might have been able to find you lost work in there. But I agree with you, the software is brutal, and Premiere Pro or Resolve are much better for KZbinrs. Where Avid shines is it's shared workspace capabilities, which makes it useful for film and tv editing where there's multiple users in the same project.

Lately I have been experimenting with Davinci Network Collaboration and I just want to say that for smaller teams it's very convenient and allows to do very much. Definitely worth it to get into Davinci if you are solo or a company that is on a smaller size but with multiple post-people. Of course not for huge post-production houses, AVID is king there.

As a TV & Media Production student who used it mainly for editing for the the first 3 years of my course so far... YEAH its slower and the ONLY reason it exists and is popular for editing films, is simply because the software and hardware combo has stuck around.. and "old people" use it, aka it stuck around cause its more expensive and annoying to switch for pros who job it is to edit films etc.. which means the company has had little reason to improve its software...

Avid is only great for studio projects because it easily allows multiple people to work in the same project, and it’s what’s been used since computers were invented. It’s meant to work as part of a team, not as a multitool. The main focus as far as I know is picture editing and bringing EVERYTHING together in the end. It’s outdated, clunky, and weird. I hate that it’s the industry standard, but hey Everything Everywhere All At Once was edited on Premiere so maybe we’re on the right track

AVID is only for cutting keeping only film professionals in mind where the sound, color, vfx is done by other departments. I've used AVID for 10 years and it's still best for cutting scenes and montages especially when you are intuitive the Asymmetrical Trimming is fantastic but it won't be of any help for KZbinrs who do edit, color, sound, VFX in edit software itself. I later switched to fcpx to premiere/after effects to Davinci resolve currently that's the best for my level of edit, VFX, Color and complex sound Design + Mix. recently I tried filmora and capcut as well but to be honest nothing is as intuitive as cutting in AVID which sadly doesn't live upto today's expectations where editing is more about VFX, motion graphics animation roto tracking etc

its mainly because of how tanky avid is, like you could put 20 cameras each with 4k footage on the timeline + multiple people working on the project at once and it will still scrub through like a normal timeline. but yeah i agree i have no idea why tf people havnt switched when its so inefficient in literally EVERYTHING ELSE
