It's time once more for me to take on a new Polyhia song. This time it's their song "Reverie". I have often received backlash for not "getting" Polyphia or understand their true talents, despite always being very complimentary about their style. Today, let's try again.

@@DomSchu’kids these days’ Learning guitar has always been in the interest of kids for decades now. My partner (21) has 2 guitars and can play both because he’s been interested since he was young, my father has been in many punk bands and started playing guitar in his teens- over 40 years ago. Let’s not pull the ‘kids these days’ bullshit. It just doesn’t help inspire the new generation to pick up an instrument.

Gotta give some positvity towards them in the comments here, their rythms and melodies always get my head bobbing and when I saw them in London 2 months ago it was a way better experiene than I thought Id have watching an instrumental-only band. It was certainly odd not having any lyrics to sing along to and hearing everyone singing the riffs instead. I believe these guys are great, but there's definitely even more room to expand upon thier musical soundscape and embrace songwriting even more.

I don't go out of my way to listen to Polyphia, they aren't *quite* my cup of tea... But I respect the insane amount of talent each of them has. And I don't mind listening to them... it's just they don't match the chaotic sounds of my racing thoughts, so I have to be in the mood for it... or after a joint. They really are good after a joint I'm realizing, right now. Don't LOVE polyphia, but I do like them, and respect them greatly They always look like they're having such a great time, just vibing with the music they're playing. When you can see that the artist is really feeling it... That's when you know they're a true musician.

Yeah, I watch them play live, or listen to a track, I can appreciate the techniques, but each track, just sounds like a continuation of all the others. Like it’s the same album. I’ve said it from the first time I heard Henson play, the runs just all sound like a guitar exercise. The rhythms, are just setups, for the slap, tap and riff. Any melody, is brief, and has multi harmonic layers of guitars, whether via effects, and/or the players harmonizing.

Polyphia for me is the Prog/Metal equivalent of Jacob Collier. Ive seen both live in concert and i can really sum up both their work as prolific talent and skill thats on full display. They pull out all the stops which creates an unbelievably complex and genius bed of sound. With that being said, it takes effort to listen to their music and it can get exhausting. Its not typically my cup of tea, however, whenever im in the right mood, nothing stratches the itch in my brain like they do

Looks like Polyphia is having fun, which was not evident before. Their playing is stunning, and the rhythm section is tighter than a hungry boa constrictor. Believe it or don't, there is some 12 year old kid listening to Polyphia who is already as good as Tim Henson. My whole philosophy when I was actively playing is: Somewhere there's a 12 year old that can whip my ass on bass. I only compete with myself. I'm a perfectionist. It's freaking hard to live up to my own expectations, I can't be bothered to think about how bassist "L" is better than me. EXcellent video, Justin, and I'm glad you have an Aunt Maude. Weed is fun.

That comment can only be made by someone who doesn't really listen to what they hear when they hear polyphia or skrillex. They're completely different. The only thing they share in common is that there's a lot going on in what they make. Everything within what's going on is completely different. I get it. A lot of people are put off when they're overwhelmed by the music they hear, but then they make really bad rationalizations about it because they don't really understand what they just heard.

After watching their most recent live performance video, I feel like I get them now. They're music videos never had the same effect for me - but watching them perform live bings the human energy that their pre-recorded stuff feels like its missing. It's like with instrumental Jazz or Classical, you really need to see it live to appreciate the virtuosic performance of their instruments. It makes such a big difference that I feel like they've made a big mistake not doing this from the beginning - especially since their songs are purely instrumental and don't have singing to draw you in. IMHO, they should be doing what Vulfpeck and Snarky Puppy do and make all their recordings as truly live performances.
