You had a poorly trained over night shift Hertz worker. At my local Hertz the Bolt is the base compact ev, the Tesla 3 SR is the standard EV, the Tesla LR is rented as the premium EV, the Polestar is rented as Luxury EV and the Kia EV6 and Model Y are rented as EV SUV. That’s as it should be and that’s how the Hertz app also priotitizes them.

I had a new one when they first came out. I loved almost everything about it. I sold it after 6 months because the ride quality on bumpy roads was too rough for me and the cabin noise at highway speeds was too loud for me. I also don't like both of those things in the Model 3, so I would still choose Polestar over Model 3. If you are thinking about either Polestar or Model 3, I strongly suggest renting one for a few days to really get a feel for it. Right now, I'm loving my Lucid Air Pure!

@@LoveStallion I went from a 2015 Model S P85D and a Polestar 2 to a Lucid Air. and still yes! It is the most refined EV in existence - although I've drive the new BMW i5 and they are close to a tie with each other. Lucid is roomier and better driving, the i5 is quieter and has many more luxury options.

Bought my Polestar 2 dual motor May -22 and back at that time it was actually cheaper than a Tesla model 3 here in Finland/Europe. Now Model3 is over 10 000€ cheaper. What you get is a Volvo technology as the sister car is Volvo xc40, linear 4wd which is really nice on snow, also good old door handles work during snowy& icy winter, Google maps show all chargers, also Tesla's which means you have always preheated battery if you navigate. CCS is not a problem here because also Tesla uses it (CCS2). Just did a 2500km trip to Norway with the Polestar and actually I only used Tesla Superchargers on that trip. For me the knee room is fine, but yes there's a limited room for man spreading 😂. The biggest issue is the lack of storage room/cup holders in the front and the quite high consumption compared to Tesla.

Cool review and I would totally love to drive one of these in replacement of my economy car rental. The charging infrastructure isn’t getting any better though. The frustration is the long lines and inconsistencies in charging speeds. The upcharge for not topping off the charge is kind of crazy.

This is great info, thanks! I just rented a Polestar 2 from Hertz for February in Orlando and the rate was dirt cheap, likely because of an off-peak week on top of general EV consumer anxiety. I'm not horribly worried about rough riding (Orlando roads are very well kept, particularly in tourism areas) but the legroom might present an issue as my wife and I are both fairly tall. One thing that does make me lean more towards Tesla, however, is the charging availability. I'm going again later this year, I might try both.

Good review. I've rented 3 Polestar 2s from Hertz - always an adventure! The staff is still very unfamiliar with electric cars and basic questions were not well answered. On the positive side however; Hertz waived the recharge fee in the one case where I returned it below 70%. I found finding charging stations to be relatively easy, taking advantage of the native Android Automotive. However, once at the CCS station the experience, as you have well-documented, is not great. Overall, I enjoy the Polestar 2 experience and I think they will provide a good value as the come on the re-sale market and NACS charging is implemented.

Please be careful - the official minimum SOC is 80% now - it started in 9/2023. Some Hertz locations still allow 70% when they are very far from nearby charging stations.

Polestar is great car but there are a few issues like efficiency around 3 and charging from 20-75% takes 30 mins and interior space is on the lower side. But ride, build quality, handling are better than a Model 3 and don't even start on the looks. I own a Polestar and never had a single issue with EA(may be because I'm in west coast).

If I was traveling by airline, either for business or recreation, I would not rent any EV at my destination. Very few hotels have on-site charging, and as you mentioned in the video, condos and apartment complexes are deliberately disabling outside electric outlets so that residents can't use them to charge EV's. So this forces you as a temporary visitor to the area, to get charges at public Level 3 stations. For those of you reading this who have never had to charge an EV at a public DC fast charge station, it's very expensive: typically 3 times more per kilowatt-hour than you would pay to charge an EV at home. The average residential electric rate for overnight EV charging in the 48 contiguous states, is about 15¢/kW-hr (39¢ in Alaska and Hawaii). The five major players in the DC fast charge business are Tesla, Electrify America, EV-Go, Charge Point, and Blink. Tesla Supercharger pricing depends on location, but it averages 28¢/kW-hr for Tesla cars. For non-Tesla cars, it's 38¢. The other four charge networks, of which Electrify America has the most locations, cost 49¢/kW-hr, unless you have some kind of discount plan with them, which EV owners might have, but which rental car users typically would not. So how much does it actually cost to drive a Polestar 2 rental car, compared to, say a Toyota Camry Hybrid? The Polestar can go about 250 miles on 80 kW-hrs. That's in ideal conditions, on flat terrain, in mild weather where you are not using either the heater or air conditioner. An 80 kW-hr charge from Electrify America, at 49¢/kW-hr, costs $39.20, and will take you 250 miles, so that's 15.7¢/mile. Now let's compare to a Toyota Camry Hybrid, a similarly sized sedan. It goes 50 miles on a gallon of gas costing $3.73/gallon (the national average price this week), so that's 373¢/50= 7.5¢/mile. The Polestar 2 costs literally twice as much per mile to charge compared to putting gas in the Hybrid. But wait, there's more! A full tank of gas in the Camry will take me 550 miles, and when I take it to a gas station to fill the tank, it takes me no more than 10 minutes. The battery in the Polestar only lasts 250 miles, and charging it from 10% back up to 100% is going to take at least 1 full hour. And that's only if the charging station is actually delivering 200 kilowatts. If you pull into an Electrify America location with 8 chargers, and all 8 of them are in use, each station is only going to deliver 50 kilowatts, because the transformer feeding them is typically a 500 kilowatt unit, so it can only 200 kilowatts per station if only 2 stations are in use. If this is the situation you are in, with all 8 stations occupied, and thus your charger is only delivering 50~60 kilowatts, you will be stuck there for at least 2 full hours. By 2030, there should be a lot more public EV chargers, but I don't see any circumstances where these companies might reduce their rate to be more competitive with home charging, so renting an EV is probably going to be more expensive than renting a Hybrid for at least the next several years.

Finally a EV KZbin review that talks about the huge centre console, I have sat in a P2 and that was the one reason it had to be culled from my list of potentials. I had a few others also tall check it out and all were the same. I like the looks of it but for fitting inside it a no go for me. But then my favourite EV the Ioniq 5, I also don't fit in but not leg room it's head room in my driving position my head is literally just touching the roof, maybe half-a finger distance or less yet the new 2024 Kona no issue.

Last week at MCO getting my Hertz Tesla Model 3 rental, as Gold Plus Member, my name was not even on the board, so I had to go to the Gold Plus Member counter, was told Teslas were not in the system, I didn’t know that was their practice. Manager just told one of the employees to pick up one of the Model 3s in the lot. So I got a LR dual motor instead of the SR+. Another renter came in, they told him a Bolt EV on the lot is an SUV and bigger than the Polestar 2.

I found in my overview that the Polestar is a very good car for folks who are into cars and aren't looking at the Tesla for whatever reason. As with most things, there's no such thing as a perfect thing. ☺ Will be interested to see your thoughts on the Polestar 3 when you get a chance to have a look at it.

I work for Uber. I drive a big 2012 Jeep Liberty 🗽 with 14 mpg city 🏙️ and 25 highway 🛣️ Uber have a deal with Hertz for drivers to rent an electric car. I’m picking up a Polestar next week.

Charging to 70percent is a pain on most cars due to the top charging and distance between charger and return location. 50% should be standard and the rental company should lvl 2 it back up. You pay per gallon of gas you don’t return the same should be for kWh and evs

I rented (thru Hertz) a Polestar 2 here in North America and another in England (RH drive) and like its build quality more than a Model 3/Y. The Model 3 (both Single & Dual Motor) feel faster than either (Single or Dual motor) Polestar 2 respectively. In England it was easier to find a super charger for the Polestar. In North America, the CCS unreliable network is why I wouldn’t buy any EV other than a NACS (Tesla network) car. I can afford an E-tron but won’t buy it yet.

Why buy or rent one of these over a Tesla? The Tesla feels "thin" to me as a car. And I'm used to Volvos. And this car feels and drives like a Volvo but a lot sportier. My answer is solidity. It's just much more solid feeling a car. But get it with the smallest tires and regular suspension. As for made in China, non-factor It's made to Volvo/Polestar specs and is built as well as any Volvo coming out of Sweden or Belgium.

We have a bank of 4 EA chargers at the Cape Cod Mall. Half the time there are problems with them. You have to call their support line and have them reboot the station. Guess what? These units run on Windows ! No wonder they're balky and unreliable! It's annoying issues like this that make people renting cars say "I will never want to own an electric car!!"

Thats the principal reason i didn't buy one. Had a test drive loved nearly everything about it but the massive and especially very high centre console that also sweeps into the footwell area i found very restrictive. Annoyingly so when AFAIK its not at all necessary it needs be that huge.

@@johnpoldo8817 I think the reason is that Polestar is or at least originally was the performance brand of Geely and so an enclosed cockpit like in a race car goes with their brand. No doubt it was deigned by a team who think an enclosed cockpit is a good thing. There are after all plenty of Chinese cars without such restricted leg room.

Being a 6-week owner of a Model Y, and also being 56yo, I am still a little torn about my interaction method desires. The Teslas are like Macs back in the late 80s. Way different than IBM/Clone PCs in the interface department. Everyone but Mac did it the Microsoft way (DOS CLI and later Windows). Seems like every non-Tesla I see reactions to show a "car" that just happens to be electric. Everything else looks like a "car". The interface is common. When you drive a Tesla, you know it's a Tesla. Because of the interface. Over the years, Windows has become more like the Mac GUI, than vice versa. It will be interesting to see how the whole EV passenger vehicle space plays out over the next 10 years. Will all non-Teslas sort of tacitly agree to perform their human interaction mostly the same, just not like a Tesla? Will Teslas still be sort of iconoclastic in their interface, but still successful? Honestly, I think, due to their ability (for better or worse) to innovate at speeds unattainable by unionized, process-heavy legacy automakers, Tesla will continue to be the more forward thinking car manufacturer. Will that matter to Joe/Joan Ev-Driver? For now, yes, mostly. 5-10-15 years from now, as there are more, similar, choices? 🤷‍♂ The other rub for the legacy makers also comes back to unionization. Apart from whether someone supports that or not as an employment approach , it is undeniable that labor costs much more (and so also the end product). It is also much harder to "fat-trim" so to speak. As long as Tesla leads in innovation AND pricing they will continue to see success. If will be difficult (but not impossible) for the legacy folks to match or surpass Tesla in those categories, in the short term. Longer term their combined economies of scale might make the difference re: pricing. Innovation though? Doubtful. But as Apple learned, innovation for the sake of innovation does not necessarily lead to more sales or optimized costs.

Polestar is a lot more like Apple. Apple is very big on design and quality. So is Polestar. Tesla is something different. More tech focused, functional but quality is iffy and design isn't a standout. How Tesla is like Apple is more the ecosystem than the product philosophy. As for innovation, that'll slow down. There are others already innovating in areas Tesla isn't. Tesla's doing it in manufacturing but I think others will adapt and implement.

I think every manufacturer is going to move in the direction of Tesla and you already see that happening. The sparse interiors in Tesla's is what allows them to build cars to scale and at a profit that is better than ICE vehicles of comparable size. The manufacturers that are building EV's with ICE vehicle similarities (buttons all over the place etc.) are finding that they cannot build them to scale and they cannot build them profitably. There is a reason the Model Y is becoming the best selling SUV around the world. Other EV manufacturers such as Polestar will have a small insignificant share of the market. Tesla's interface is much more like Apple's software in that it just works and for many young buyers the experience they have with the car carries more weight than build quality which older people tend to favor.

@@pnketia The Model Y and X are the only 2 models of that size crossover that Tesla makes. However, if you put all of the models of that size, EV or hybrid/ICE together of other manufacturers, then they outsell what Tesla offers. Manufacturers just want to sell vehicles, so the particular model is part of an overall. Polestar is like Porsche or Alfa Romeo or something like that. Polestar is a Swedish company and Swedes have had Scandinavian style which is "minimalistic" or at least "sober." (No, Polestar is not Chinese for those that want to insist it is. It's Volvo's sports skunkworks, spun off from Volvo to make a line of sportier BEVs, and both are financed by their parent Geely. But Volvo and Polestar are fairly autonomous in how they manage themselves and what they share with Geely and Volvo's operations and history is Swedish, not Chinese and that has been retained throughout the Geely ownership.) Tesla's interface isn't as styled as Apple's interface. It's an interface that functions well but a big part of Apple's appeal is style (these guys sweat the details of each pixel) and industrial design, not a Tesla strongpoint. Yes, others will be like Tesla but not in interior design. Some will be more minimal than others. They will be more lean to cut costs so they'll use gigacasting and more automation and so forth. But in terms of style, Tesla limits itself with its lack of variety of vehicles offered. They all have the same shape and you just can't have the functionality and space to fit things in that shape that you do in a more boxy shape. That's why the Kia EV9 looks like it does and the Volvo EX90 , or BMW iX and so forth. Tesla will be an early adapter of tech and a leader for some time. How long, who knows? But sooner or laters, others will lead in certain directions. Mercedes introduced a lot of interesting tech in the EQXX. Toyota is now working on their new BEV platform and manufacturing methods and supply chains and they were the first to introduce variable steer by wire. I think Tesla fans sometimes underestimate the capability of the established, so called "legacy" brands. They've survived and thrived for a long time because they can adapt. And no I don't believe this "disruption" will be something impossible to overcome. It's another adapt to changing winds they'll do and how it all ends up is anyone's guess.

It's called ESG. Hertz racking up those points for the future ecosystem. It also makes it look like EV sales are doing better than they actually are. Fleet sales (with massive government incentives) make up a rather large percentage of total EV sales. The narrative around these duds is collapsing fast.

I spent some time in these while in Australia recently. They're fine. If you must have an EV and don't want a Model 3 or Y, and don't mind owning a Chinese car, then this'll do. I guess. The tail lights are cool, but otherwise the exterior is dumpy and definitely not upscale, so I'm not sure why you'd chose one over a Hyundai or Kia. I'd probably walk out of the showroom and over to the Cadillac Lyriq.

I bought a Polestar 2 over a Tesla for multiple reasons. 1. The ride quality blew away the Teslas I have driven. 2. Little to 0 cabin noise from wind or tires. 3. The build quality is hands over fist better. 4. It's not a Tesla 5. We'll get access to the Tesla Network next year.

Chinese product is good today ?? what about water leak inside like a pool ? what about underneath rust ? i have a 2022 electric Volvo with lot of problem i change the battery under warranty new in the box MADE IN CHINA and now the electric motor is very noisy , back order from China all parts broke one after other next time i will buy a Chines car at half price

I just went to pick up a rental last night from ATL. There were line of Polestar cars. Yet, the customers were still waiting for Tesla’s to show up including me. I waited 5 minutes for them to wash and bring a Tesla. For me because I have charging at home. I wish I talked to few others to see their reasoning.

Polstar was originally the sports brand to Volvo, think M car for BMW but geely took the name and spun it into its own brand

I don't know if Geely spun it off or not. But yes, Polestar is basically a variation of Volvo. There are still Volvo Polestars you can buy: the s60 Polestar and the XC60 Polestar.

Because China built doesn't matter. Home grown Chinese matters. Polestar is a Swedish spinoff of Volvo and not considered a Chinese brand despite what so many commenters like to push (that Polestar or Volvo are Chinese opposed to Chinese-owned--a significant difference). BYD has buses in the USA but no Chinese-brand car is available in the USA.

Polestar is not a company in China. They are out of Gothenberg Sweden. Geeley is out of China. Polestar is strictly a Volvo European Company. Geeley financial backs the EV part. I believe Hertz is still renting out the Old versions of the Polestar2. The newer versions just came end of 2022 and beginning of 2023. Good informative video though.

Testing is fine, but charging it is a nightmare. You need an account first, and most of those accounts are a monthly charge on top of charging cost. Than you have to find a charger station and most of the time it’s 2 or 4 stations and halve of them are always broken. Once you found a charging station and set up an account you have to wait 45min charging and more if someone is charging and you have to wait for a station. Simply not worth the hassle. I just go with a gas car or a Tesla, as the have the reliable charging infrastructure.

It's not as bad if you already own a CCS car back home, meaning you already have all of the apps and accounts and know how to use them. But, I do get what you're saying. I drive a Bolt at home, but if renting an EV in another city, my first choice would definitely be Tesla. If a Tesla were unavailable, I would actually choose a Bolt over a Polestar simply because the Bolt is a car I know how to drive and optimize, while a Polestar is unfamiliar territory, so I'd need to be much more cautious about battery level. Of course, I would never actually wait for the Bolt to top-charge for the return unless I was running early and would just be sitting at the airport anyway; I'd just eat the $35 fee and spare myself the time.

@@ab-tf5fl - Better to just go with gas or a Tesla. I would not advise a non-EV owner to go with any other EV as it is a massive issue. It would put you off EV's for life, and Dave and Kathy are correct in what they are saying. Don't get me wrong I would love to own a TESLA but simply can not bring myself to spend 60k+. Its a depreciating asset so you would have to be made of money to want to throw away huge sums in depreciation when you eventually sell. I run an old VW Golf. Its looks like new, never had any issues beyond having to replace the door handles (a common issue, like the Model S handles), but easy to replace and very cheap at 25 for a replacement. I have replaced 3 to date and have a 4th on standby ready to replace if it starts to act up.I get 62MPG oil burner. 21 yrs old and I love driving it. Plenty of power as it is the 150BHP. To most that not much but to me its all I need. Great Torque and can pull a trailer easily without impacting MPG much. The issue I have is most cities now are banning older cars or making them pay to drive into those zones. Hence would love a Model X, but they are too much trouble so will look for a used Model Y or 2nd choice Model 3. I want to spend a max of 20k so it's unlikely I am going to find one at that price.I have never purchased a car new and never spent more than 20k for a used car.

@@latitudeash for many charging is not an issue at all as they charge 98% of the time at home. Anyway also around here you only need 2 or 3 charging app and there is no monthly fee and charging is cheaper than in SuperChargers. And you can also charge at superchargers. I would not advice anybody to go Tesla if you want solid car and quality. And you cannot wait 2 month + repair times. If those things are OK for you then at least M3 is nice car to drive (unless it rains).

Traveling with a CCS car in the US is seemingly a mystery, or a challenge. You’re not 100% sure that a DC charger will work when you arrive, or it (there is likely only 1 charger) might be charging slower than you expect, so your plans could change. I’ve had few issues using CCS over the past 5+ years, but to use them does take more planning, along with having a backup plan. For the most part, EA is the only higher speed fast chargers, and they are frequently located at Walmart stores (thanks to WM), although EVgo is now deploying some faster ones at new sites, but what about the single chargers they left behind? We have several dead or untrustworthy ones here in Michigan. My CCS car gets charged at home mostly, and that always works.

There's occasional issues with the CCS network but it's actually good enough for cross country drives and the network is improving rapidly.

@@mho0 So what kind of values do you get? I did an average of 16kWh/100km including Autobahn driving in early autumn. When it became colder it dropped to 18-19. Both seemed to me industry leading.

@@ManfredvonHolstein If I drive very nice about 80kmh -> 18. At summer time. But my normal driving at summer time it is between 20 - 23. Now when temperature has been -5 - -20 C -> at least 25 if battery/car is warm. Starting from cold it jumps to 30 or more.

Hertz cut a deal to make a fast buck certainly not because they wanted people to drive EVs ,Tesla allocation for Rental cars maybe nearly full,why discount to Hertz when you can sell full price to private buyers.Polestar has a factory turning these out and no buyers but Hertz seems to be showing poor customer service in the way they push and rent these cars out which is truly shocking.What happens to these cars in four to five years low mileage due to lack of demand they’ll end up sitting in a field .France wants to stop the Chinese flooding the market with their EVs which seems to be happening here in the US

Nope. Polestar is the performance, not luxury, tune of Volvo cars. They then branched out into making their own lines of cars. The Polestar 2 is a Volvo design. The Concept 40.2. The Polestar 3 starts Polestar's designs and here's is where you'll see just how great they are at designing.

Fact is, the Polestar 2, as decent as it is, is NO comparison to the Dual Motor Model Y. The Y is cheaper with the 7500 tax Credit has NACS , Tesla's supercharger network and the firmware is outstanding. I would say that the Polestar is a little more spicy looking than the Model Y, which has a fish front and fat arse.

Hi Dave. My wife and I recently rented a Polestar 2 from Hertz in Amsterdam. I was underwhelmed by it. Like you I'm tall and I had to sit in the back seat. It is really difficult to get out of the car from the back seat, I really struggled with it. We thought the materials in the interior were cheap and plasticy. It was the lowest cost car of any kind you could rent there. The people at Hertz told us that people are afraid of renting an electric. We needed to charge it before we returned it. Lucky for us all the Tesla chargers in Holland are open to all brands of car. (we couldn't get the public chargers to work) The Tesla chargers worked perfectly and efficiently. Not impressed by this car.

How would telling someone who is new to EVs how to charge at EA (or other networks) be any harder than having to tell someone how to charge at a Tesla Supercharger? Do you not need an app for both when you're not the owner? You'd prefer to rent a Tesla because you have Teslas. I'd prefer to rent a Polestar because I have a Polestar. Also important to note when talking about interior materials, you're in a near base model rental car. There are nicer options available.

When you rent a Tesla, you plug into a supercharger, just like people that own their Tesla, and everything just works. No app required. (The cost of the charging is automatically billed to the credit card associated with the car rental, with no Hertz markups).

Polestar 2 is a cheaply made throwaway EV. I had a 2022 on lease and got rid of it after 8 months. The ride quality, app, interior quality while looking good is very cheaply made.
