Time to get the transmission off the old 390 engine. In order to do that though I had to get the crankshaft to spin. Fortunately I was able to get it to move after a considerable amount of hammering on the pistons.

I tore down a 1965 industrial 318 polysphere that was abused in an excavator. It looked as bad as that caddy engine, the intake ports were full of rust completely, cylinders were all full of crud as well, 3 bent connecting rods, the machine had sat outside for 30 years.

Rear distributor means it is 1959-62? 1963 and later had distributor at the front. Engine might be salvageable. Depends on whether block is cracked. Crank doesn't look too bad. The block should be fairly thick walled so it might clean up with a large overbore. Those early blocks were built stout, not like the thin wall later stuff.

WOW! That reminds me of my first car, a '52 Chevy 6 cylinder. All 6 of the exhaust valves were eaten away, none would come close to sealing, and the number 1 and number 6 valves were more than half burned away. I replaced all the exhaust valves, reground the intakes, and should have pulled the oil pan and replaced the rings. It still burned a quart of oil about every 50 miles, but at least it ran fairly well, till I blew a rod bearing after going three days without adding oil.

@ASPCOT

onhawaii ... That is an interesting idea... I just wondered if the saw would cut the wrist pin. I am currently faced with that situation but I don't want to hammer on it, I'm afraid of cracking the cylinder wall. But I do like the idea of a large round hole in the piston, l could cut a slot down the skirt to relieve the pressure.
@onhawaii
@onhawaii 5 жыл бұрын
Good point! ASPCOT. that is why I said with the right tool. So you need a hole saw that will cut the wrist pin. If it only cuts the piston it might help to free some tension or help to break the wrist pin out of the piston. If not you could just drill a few 1/4" holes around it to break the piston rings and get some WD40 or so down the sides to get a better penetration. The main problem would be solved and the tension is released. What always works is a plasma cutter. Worst case you have to get cylinder liners. Does not work on all engines... but the is a solution you might want to consider. Heat up the block and cool down the liner and press them in. After that you bore and hone it to the size required. Make sure that the liner can't slide all the way down so don't bore it all the way to the bottom or have a rim on the top. And the head will hold it down. Ask your local machine shop that do things like that. Yes it isn't cheap to do so. You could ask them to get the pistons out for you. That is the best solution to it the most times. They will bore and hone them then too if the engine is worth it. I think that is the best solution if you don't have the right tools.

You could just have: 1) Unscrewed the bell hosing; 2) Removed the old pan; 3) Removed the main and rod caps (if accessible). The crank would then have been free from the block with the flex-plate attached. Then just unscrewed the flex-plate from the torque converter. No need to take heads off and do all that extra work. If some of the rod caps were not accessible, cut the crank with a torch at the rear main. The whole job should take about 1/2 hour with proper tools and equipment. BTW, pressure clean before doing anything.
