I'm so glad you were able to put my feelings into words. "everything is ahead of them but also their future is nothing." I try to take advantage of my youth and opportunities but the anxiety about global warming and a massive shift in the status quo in the back of my mind taints that idea. I grew up during the Great Recession and had never been able to shake the feeling that the world had some huge party before I was born and now winding down.
@tuuudes34493 жыл бұрын
I had this weird, mostly subconscious feeling as a kid that I was living in an era that was no longer progressing towards an imagined brighter future, and was instead in the middle of a long and slow decline. Once I left high school and my personal possibilities started expanding in university and beyond, that subconscious feeling went away and I started focusing more on what I could do in the future. I was also encouraged by the elections of liberal leaders in a bunch of countries who talked the talk and seemed to want to advance the positive progress of history. A few years later, after multiple personal problems, disappointment with liberal leaders, a lot of political education, and the start of the "right wing populist" wave with Brexit, trump, Duterte, Bolsonaro, Duda and Orban, that feeling of deep societal decline came back with a vengeance. But this time it wasn't a response to the pervasive cultural pessimism of the 90s that I subconsciously picked up as a kid, it was a much deeper understanding of the causes and consequences of the very real decline we're living in.

Ha. The choking one rings a bell. A couple years back I started having nightly panic attacks *so visceral*, I was convinced that every one was “the heart attack that would kill me.” One of the most terrifying nights, I decided to go to the ER for answers…and to just not be alone. Before leaving the apartment, I made the bed, tidied up, and did my makeup because I was genuinely concerned people would consider me a slob…after I (inevitably) died. Even then I *knew* it was a comically/tragically out of place priority, but Shame, insecurity, and self-loathing were master over every aspect of my self. Sending encouragement and hope to anyone struggling. There IS After: 4+years (and a lot of intentional investment in mental and physical healing) later, and I consider myself escaped from Hell.

The opening sketch is the perfect apotheosis of the show: largely a series of banal but ultimately innocuous social faux pas’ that anyone has experienced a handful of times (e.g. pushing a “pull” door in front of someone you’re trying to impress) taken to the edge of discomfort (embarrassing yourself by pushing the door again), and then taken ANOTHER step further until the mistake is irredeemable and you have no choice but to LEAN INTO your foolishness and implicate others with you so that they can share in your personal momentary hell (breaking the entire doorframe while making unbroken eye contact with your peer)

@rbitrary2 жыл бұрын
I have really bad second had embarrassment, and if anything this show made it better by how absolutely bonkers impossible each scenario gets. Another commenter mentioned this, but it's like it's showing me how ridiculous and unrealistic my anxieties are, like "oh no, what if they don't like my present and dont want to tell me... Well I'll have to ask for the receipt back to prove they actually like it! But what if they manage to steal it back... Then id just HAVE to eat the receipt before they can grab it back!" etc.
