The Space Van project has been the ONE reason I started to follow your channel. You are approaching all the problems intelligently, peacefully and methodologically. That is your strength. Although I believe all the setbacks make your head ache. Please do not abandon this project because the van would be scrapped without you. The burden of trying to understand previous owners/builders ideas is not easy to carry. I would estimate the "load" worth about 200.000 when working decently. You are the hope and inspiration for car enthusiasts who restore really old patched up vehicles. HI Alex, I'm an 12v aftermarket installer and what that module looks like to me is a key-less entry module. The green and blue wires are negative pulse usually by default under a second and up to three through programming. Green is lock and blue is unlock. So if you were to ground the blue wire simulating unlock output that might trigger a function to start. Maybe... That module is readily available but since it's just a momentary ground output you could easily test your results. It's also not waterproof by any means. Sad to see the ending you had. Good luck! -Jon

Just an idea but for little to no cost for you, I'd clean all the wires up under the hood, eliminate any that don't need to be there. Fuel, air, spark are the three keys for the gas motor, then research how the Chevy Volt changes from electric to gas mode, chase the key wires from the engine management system back to the computer side of the electric part and see what's causing the short. As for the acceleration problem on the gas motor it may be drive by wire versus cable like old school cars, seems that when in ev mode the throttle works fine but when in gas the drive by wire system doesn't connect back to the throttle body which is all ran through a computer. I say start from scratch, clean all unnecessary wires up in the engine compartment and go from there. As stated previously the rear axle was a custom hack job, poor welds on it, either fix it or find it from another vehicle. I'd really like to see you come out on top with this vehicle.

Given that it's a standard Chrysler gas engine, I wouldn't give up on in quite yet. That throttle issue I'm guessing, is that the switch over from EV to gas should cause a number of relays to switch control. Your starter bypass worked but I'd bet there's another relay that the computer should be activating, that connects the gas pedal to the fuel system or engine computer.

I was at a meeting with Bight when there had a business incubator at the University of Indiana in the Indianapolis area years ago (early 2010’s if memory serves) and met with the engineering team and saw the “Bight Idea” (what you call the Space Van). Bright was looking for funding from the company I worked for… I spent an entire day pouring over it and it was a typical “prototype show vehicle” it was pretty crudely cobbled together based on a Chrysler product vehicle on the time and did not function when I saw it. They could not even get it to function to demo it to us at the time… I’m not aware of it ever reliably functioning as designed…

That is weird the electric motor will vibrate like that at all for any reason though. Does the gas engine drive the car or charge the battery? I think I was wrong in the first post. I will have to look for some sources before I take your word all motors shake violently when low voltage. What I was saying is there must be some mechanical switch between the electrical motor and gas engine to drive the car. When I said glitch I meant maybe the gas engine linkage was engaging at the same time as the motor and it caused the violent shaking. I don't think shaking motors is normal even with a bad battery Edit: I'm probably wrong. I think the engine drives the steers and the motor the rear. So what I said above is probably not the problem but sounds like a really poorly designed motor controller or something.

It looks like that concept was never realized...it would be pretty awesome if Alex is able to get the space van to prove the concept and succeed where the original team couldn't, or ran out of time /money to do so. The electric power has been fixed - amazing job Alex! Fixing the axle shouldn't be an issue. Same for the ICE - throttle response appears to be a communication or linkage issue. I sympathise completely with that feeling of defeat when every success just seems to lead to another failure - I used to own a Land Rover. The van is really only worth what you put into it. As a concept car it's of very limited use outside a museum or collection, and if the CEO is happy to reimburse you for your efforts he deserves to get his van back. It would be the right thing to do. If you really want to get this thing running as a sort of daily drive, you'll have to team up with an electrician, strip out all the wiring and redo it, then get a mechanic to go right through the thing looking for problems. Would it be worth the cost? Probably not. You've given it your best shot and it's driving you nuts. Time to save it in as original condition as possible for historical reasons and get it back to the CEO.

Long ago I used to work in a telephone exchange. I have really enjoyed watching you delve into the problems with the van. The four big problems which I see are 1) no circuit diagrams; and 2) a complex electrical system, 3) something which is experimental, and 4) a powerful electrical system. If you had just no circuit diagrams or a fairly simple system or something which wasn't experimental (i.e. the van was actually in production as a roadworthy vehicle) or something which wasn't capable of serious injury or harm then it might be worth continuing down this path, but not having circuit diagrams is a major issue, and the fact it is complex and experimental leaves you like when you're driving around a part of the city you don't know without a map. The two obvious choices are either to sell to the old CEO or to donate it to a suitable museum. There's just too many things which are going wrong with it, with no logical pathway to fix them. Circuit diagrams are essential to having a logical repair pathway. I just feel there's too much risk of some sort of serious incident happening with this van, so I recommend you dispose of it. You've fixed the easy things, and what's ahead is more hours of labour with less to show for it. I just saw your first video after you had left working for the police department. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just don't see continuing to fix this van as fitting within your vision. I recommend you pray for wisdom.

Here is my gut on the gas throttle. I would wager it’s an electronic throttle, and that somewhere in the computer system there’s a switch that sends the throttle input to the electric motor or sends it to the gas motor. That switch is probably stuck on the electric motor, which is why it works when your EV power but not when the gas engine is running.

Alex has put in an incredible effort and I’m impressed how far he’s gotten. At this point, it seems like it needs engineers to be able to do more with it. BTW, that USB thing in the video looks like a USB serial adaptor. I can’t say for sure though. It could be there to help debug firmware on some of the vehicle’s subsystems. That’s part of why I think it’s a good idea to just offload the van. Let the former CEO or a museum with the right resources be the one to do the reverse engineering and further repair that’s needed.

Hi, Ive send you a comment in one of the older video of the van that I was questioning how the gas powertrain works and that I work at a Chrysler dealership since 15 years as a diagnostic specialist. I may help you out at least on the Chrysler engine! For the electric throttle body non responding, check if you have any electronic throttle body related DTC. You should be able to rev the engine even in park/neutral. The throttle body fail quite often on those 1.8/2.0/2.4 engines. Like I told you on the previous video, lot of the unused connectors are from the donor Jeep Compass/Patriot so you should be able to use those wiring diagram to figure out what's going on. For the engine to start correctly, the WCM/SKIM, the PCM, the TCM and the TIPM (the fuse box because yes, its an module too) must communicate together and have the proper "hand shake" data to start. Anyway If you can contact me and send me the full scan report of you autel scanner I might be able to guide you on whats going on.

No way they ever had it functional as represented. If they did, there would be _scads_ of footage of it running around, switching back and forth from gas to EV power, delivering goods, etc. for them to publicize and show off. But nothing. I think our hero Alex has likely taken it further than it has been before, and that's no fail. I like the museum idea, or maybe the CEO can display it in his rec room/man cave.

Hey Alex, I completely understand your frustration when it comes to working on a vehicle. It can be a time-consuming and complicated process, especially if you're not familiar with Space Van. It's completely normal to feel frustrated at times. However, with determination and the right resources, I'm sure you'll be able to successfully tackle any vehicle-related challenge that comes your way. Hang in there! As a nonverbal individual my 1999 Tahoe LT. A few months ago, my friend and I rebuilt the 5.7 Vortec engine, but it was challenging and we faced many difficulties. I have put a lot of time and money into running again. but still won't run issue My goal has always been simple restore it with a nice lift. Every time I think I’ve taken one step forward I get excited but I get so depressed of it. She has a lot of memories in my childhood which I brought from my uncle. One day I can show off his Tahoe again

Prototypes or concepts are designed to fail. They are built to show off a theory and then turn into R&D to figure out how it will work in practice. See if the CEO wants it for whatever he is willing to pay. At least the cost of parts invested. However, someone somewhere out there would probably love this to start over with a concept of their own and ideas they have for EV courier type vehicles. Great content and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!

The small module you cleaned is just receiver for your remote locking. You can either try to unlock it by a key fob or just completely remove the module from the car and connect all wires, which are divided. It should be mounted under the dash, that's why there is no weather protection and all the corrosion.

I wonder if the computer turns on the engine by using a remote for the remote start module. It would make sense that they might use an off the shelf module to bypass the security system (even though it looks like an original key). That might explain the relay clicking and why it worked before and doesn't now.

Switching out of electric mode trigger the gas engine to "remote start" so you dont have to turn the key. Then it has the timeout disabled so it doesn't just shut off like remote start normally would

With that aftermarket alarm I know back in the day they use to put a antenna type of wire around the key cylinder under the plastic cover and that will not let you start your car if there is a problem with the alarm. If you remove that from around lock cylinder the van should start with factory ignition

Something I've thought from when you first got this was that getting it to work with the original hardware as originally advertised was going to be borderline impossible for anybody regardless of skill or knowledge. I'm actually shocked you spent so much time trying to make that happen. I thought you'd end up body-swapping it with another drive-train since the way it looks is really the best part of this van. If you don't want to do that (and man I would not blame you at all) then it really may be better to just let this go. For what it's worth, I actually do enjoy the content you make with this but if you're not having fun with it then doing it to please the people who watch isn't worth it.
