I currently work as a 3D animator in Spain’s animation industry, and several of my coworker friends worked on this. Haven’t seen it myself yet, but they seemed happy with it and the work they did. The director’s son was the inspiration for the non-verbal kid in the film, who suffered the same disease. His son sadly succumbed to it a few years ago at the age of 16 😢 Before he made this film, he did an award-winning short that also featured a similar child character called “Cuerdas”.

I worked on the film as a 3D Environment Artist. It may seem simple at first, but the movie is full of references to "Cuerdas" short film (made by the same people as this film) and moments from the real life kid Nico itself. It's a beautiful tribute from a father who lost his kid 2 weeks after the greenlight of the film, and got the luck to keep it alive on the big screen. Our team put in a lot of efforts to replicate the movements of Nico and, for 10 times less budget than other international Disney/DreamWorks films, I'm sure we touched a lot of hearts out there. If you read this and didn't watch it yet, I hope you can give it a try on theaters or when it releases on digital, you can be sure that Buffalo Kids it's made with love. ❤

It's a shame animation studios in Spain don't seem to try to push further than "generic 3D Disney artstyle" nowadays. It happened with Tadeo Jones (which was called "Tad the Explorer" overseas and personally I believe is a terrible translation XD), Capture the Flag, Mummies and now with Buffalo Kids. Don't get me wrong, the short film "Cuerdas" is amazing and a must-watch, but it feels as if in order to "fit" and resonate with american audiences they cut away every brisk of personality the artstyle could have had. In the other hand it's as if companies don't let people experiment with other animation styles or 2D animation, SPA Studios had a new movie in the making but Netflix cut the funds because it was a "lengthy production" :(

I think you mentioned something about this animation style dying due to AI. Well, considering that it was the reason why 2D is dead in the first place, and the Pixar CGI style is over saturated, I feel like it's a matter of time. We might see a boom of experimental indie animation while bigger studios stick to Pixar style made by AI. And Pixar either has to adapt or they'd be accused of making movies with AI.

Tbh I think it’s a good shift that a lot of films, shows, and indie shorts/projects have noticeably changed to be more distinct and unconventional in their art styles. Like animation has the potential for all different types of art direction yet the most turned out stuff is this highly saturated smoothed out art style. Like those words just describe ai art in general lol. This movie’s story sounds so wholesome and cute but still doesn’t negate that the art direction is kind of lacking (like art and story are separate). I’m an animation student wanting to go to visdev and art and design is very intentional so might as well play around with cinematography, rendering, medium, etc. (and kids can handle and deserve that, just hope that animation doesn’t devolve into everything looking like a mobile game ad lol)

Yeah, can you explain what was so wrong with it? Just curious since you don't really specify what exactly the film did wrong, you just point out another movie's flaws to compare.

If you were bound to a chair would not atleast once in your life dream to dance? Cmon man, be more understanding.

When it finally does come to pass that a film is made entirely with AI, then there will be no more reason to go see films. The snake will have eaten its own tail and completely consumed itself, leaving us with nothing left. :(

The concept vaguely reminds me of the wingfeather saga. One of the siblings in the story can’t walk very well, and through the first book she rides a giant dog to help her get around

Personally, I would actually say that this movie has broken boundaries: by being a fairly accurate period piece as an animated film set in the turn of the century. I am very fascinated with that era in general, and seeing an animated film actually pay a lot of attention in getting details right (or close to right) to make something wholesome makes me actually want to watch the movie. And in a way the animation reminds me of The Sea Beast, another kids animated film that I found and enjoyed on netflix.

The style looks similar to Leap aka Ballerina.

I am not excited for A.I generated movies, since more adults will more likely to buy these movies thinking that it's fine for kids. Even though it's soulless, as my mom thought she putted a real "animated movie." But, yet me and my sister quickly noticed that it was A.I.

Is not an AI movie, is a 3D Animated Spanish Movie, see Mort & Phil: Mission Implausible, Tad: The Explorer or Planet 51.

I’m so glad I’m not the only one who thought of this - the animation of the trailer just looked like ai and I was confused whether it was helped by ai or not

If 2D animation still existed I bet this is going to be directed by don bluth

This would have slapped so hard in Don Bluth animation style.

everything you see in the movie is not ai, but its not unlikely that the concepts and design didnt use ai in the process, a lot of companies are doing that at the moment and not publically

In Italy, it is promoted so much.. that everyone- not only thinks that it is made maybe with AI, but even for the graphic style that this film has, apart the story of the film and of the possible overused and now useless "good example" that they make with the protagonist on a wheelchair..

It's strange isn't it, a sign of the times maybe? When I first saw the poster and small snippets being passed around it didn't quite look right. All computer animation doesn't quite look right but that was part for it until AI started saturating everything. It's a pity how we are all so suspicious these days I guess we have to be though. I hope the smaller firm does find some attention.
