When I was a kid the uglydolls you'd see in stores were like, actually made to look 'unappealing' compared to other toys. They had greyish/unsaturated colors, blank stares, and their fuzz already looked worn. Well, the truth is, no one has to tell you to be yourself. You are _always_ yourself. When you are in denial and dishonest with yourself, you are still exactly the person you are meant to be in that moment: a person in need of introspection, but still authentic. Even that dishonesty is part of who you are. If you build your identity on lies and omissions, you will eventually become the facade you wear; you won’t know the difference between the mask and your real face. They could make them more complicated and make the ones that are based off of real or mythical creatures a little more realistic, give all of them less chibi proportions, add some imperfections like asymmetry or really yellow teeth, throw in some scragglyness, make some of them either strange grayish brownish or greenish shades etc, or give them complimentary color palettes since complimentary colors can look bad together. Also to facilitate ugly color palettes, instead of solid colors some of them should have markings that clash with their base color especially since a lot of them appear to be animals. Also for shapes of the abstract ones they should look at gourds. Some gourds are really ugly. If a couple of the dolls were literally multicolored gourds with faces and legs that could be ugly.

Realistically, Lou would have been super valuable. People love rare, unreleased toys. How does the portal work? Are they only given to kids? A collector would love him and he wouldn't get dirty or anything. That seems the ideal situation for him. Unless they only want to be with kids and nobody else, which is a missed opportunity with all these living toy movies. They always focus on kids ignoring nostalgic adults and collectors. It would be an interesting change to focus on a collector who really treasures them or an adult who's had them since they were young and still cares for them. See, this is why I really respect the designs of Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame". They went to great lengths to make Quasimodo genuinely ugly without making him hard to look at, managing to balance right at the "ugly cute" mark, like a pug.
@l.n.3372 Жыл бұрын
I've always respected fiction like Hunchback of Notre Dame and Phantom of the Opera because they both hard commit to the concept. Quasimodo and the Phantom are, well .... not attractive. They're "ugly" as the definition would say. Both having facial deformity. And in the case of HoND, is also a hunchback. And yet, every adaptation of these books goes the lengths to show that ugliness is NOT the worst factor in play. In Disney HoND, the concept is about "who is the monster and who is the man?" Where Frollo seems outwardly normal but he's a genocidal racist. And Quasimodo is ugly but is genuinely nice and kind. The ugliness/monster is actually meant to be the racist villain and NOT the deformed hero. In Notre Dame de Paris, it again emphasized that Quasimodo is the genuinely good person despite the deformity. While Frollo loses his humanity due to his lust, and Phoebus is an immoral man whore who doesn't really care about women. In Phantom, Christine tells Erik that his "haunted face holds no horror for me now. It's in your soul that the true distortion lies." Again, showcasing the message that it's about one's actions that define one as a monster and NOT how one is deformed. The Phantom was deformed and was treated with cruelty for his whole life. But instead of becoming a kind person like Quasimodo, the Phantom internalized such rejection and became a bad person himself. He only becomes redeemed upon learning he was selfish and choosing to let Christine have her freedom back. His love for Christine redeems him when he realizes that he's been selfish and if he cares about her, he needs to let her go and be free. Both HoND and PotO portrayed the message well: physical deformity doesn't make one a monster. Only one's actions define who we are and not solely based upon appearances.

I actually thought that the hunchback guy was pretty ugly, soz. But he had his *moments* of cuteness. I think they embraced the ugly, but they went wrong when they didn't make the pretty lass fall for him, despite his ugly exterior. That's how the movie *should* have gone. Whatevs.
@blondbraid79866 ай бұрын
@@IllisiaAdamsActually, I think that's a part where the story shines, by showcasing how Quasimodo and Frollo both handled rejection. Quasimodo can't have Esmeralda, but he still chooses to protect her out of the goodness of his heart, whereas Frollo, upon being rejected, becomes cruel and vengeful towards her. The entire point is to show how selfless Quasimodo is compared to Frollo, and having him save her in order to be rewarded with a hot girlfriend would take away a lot from that message.

Lou sounds like a better protagonist. Imagine being stuck in what is essentially a teacher or drill sergeant's roll, presumably for eternity, training generation after generation of fellow dolls and sending them off to on an adventure-with all the potential joy and risk involved- that you want to go on for yourself. Your job is essentially to make friends with these characters, prepare them for all the eventualities and damage they'll have to take and...just watch them go, sigh, and do it all again with the next batch, rarely if ever knowing how it will turn out for all of them. The movie could have been about him struggling with this maddening cycle, trying to change his fate, with the climax being his either choosing to take the plunge for himself, or sacrifice his own desires so that other dolls will be as well-prepared as possible for whatever their kids will have to throw at them. It could have made a name for itself too, going against the typical Disney-Pixar formula of character getting everything they want when they sacrifice their duty to chase their dreams by showing that sometimes, that's not the most responsible decision you can make.

Another thing, to make these dolls ugly, they should have shown their stitches, places where the fur has worn away, have tears where the stuffing is visible, etc. Like you don't have to make them to gross but like at least make them kinda ugly. Edit: Backstory for the antagonist. He was a prototype that met ox, and they became friends. Then he learns that he and his friend are going to be separated, one to uglyville while to other one to perfection whatever. Regardless of the movie itself, the fans were super talented and I remember we also had a giant group chat dedicated to rewriting the movie to be more character-focused and have more depth to the story. Either way, the general consensus in fanart and stories was that Lou deserved better, and that the characters needed more serious moments. Still, I was a kid at the time(now teen) and I think the movie is perfectly fine for what it’s trying to be and who it’s target audience is. this movie honestly had potential. if they just made the dolls a bit more ugly, and made Lou more manipulative or controlling, the story could show the message better. Maybe Mandy could’ve had something like a big scar, or a discolored spot on her face, which she would cover up with marker or something, and maybe Lou would kick out anyone who didn’t fit his perception of perfect, including humanoid dolls that have literally nothing wrong with them, but maybe he doesn’t like their hairstyle or something. Maybe the ugly dolls could fight against this, and create their own line of purposefully “imperfect” dolls. I don’t know, I just think they had a lot to work with, but didn’t do anything with it.

To answer your question about Lou being upset about being outside the red circle, it's because it was an indicator that he had "failed" the Gauntlet. If you listen closely at that part, he actually whispers "No" to himself, because it's his inevitable realization that he cannot go to the Big World, nor have a child's love. And he didn't just suddenly turn- he grew bitter over the years. It's implied that he's watched all of his friends betray him, continually leaving him for the Big World. And eventually, he snapped due to loneliness.

On top of the ugly dolls not actually being ugly by the standards of toys, no one acknowledges that the "Perfect Dolls" and the "Ugly Dolls" are different types of dolls! The ugly dolls are obviously stuffed-animal plush toys, while the perfect dolls are more like your little girl's dollhouse toys. And if I could choose between having a doll like one of the uglies or one of the perfects, I would pick the uglies. I like plushes, and as plushes, the uglies have adorable designs.

It legit breaks my heart to see these Ugly Dolls’ characters and personalities get thrown away for some kids’ movie banter that no one gives a shit about. When I was a kid, I was obsessed with Ugly Dolls, and my parents gave me a booklet full of Ugly Dolls lore and each Ugly Doll’s personality: - Babo (the blue stout doll) loves to bake, and he especially loves to bake cookies because apparently he’s a low budget/chibi version of Sesame Street’s Cookie Monster. Basically, he’s a little cookie gremlin and I love him. - Wage (the tall bear-like doll with a blue loincloth) is a hard worker, and dreams of having the right job that suits him. He also has a little brother aptly titled ‘Minimum Wage.’ - Ox (the green rabbit-like doll) and Wedgehead (originally deep blue in color) were partners in crime, and their best trick was ‘turning your stuff into their stuff.’ - Tray (the pink doll with three cyan eyes) is very intelligent (the movie gave her glasses to emphasize this, which is kind of offensive coming from a person who wears glasses to see,) but she can get very confused at times. - Ice-Bat turns everything he touches into ice, but he’s super chill to hang around with, and all he wants to do is to warm your heart. - Moxy was originally a short light green rabbit-like doll (similar in appearance to Ox) who was full of energy and moxie (get it?) and had the energy to win a fucking _marathon._ Godspeed, Moxy. There are more, but I’m too tired to list them all.

Imagine doing the same thing, over and over, doll after doll. Hell if he was forced to teach the 'perfection' lesson over and over it kinda makes sense him coming to believe it. He doesn't give two nuts about compasion cause it looks like he hasn't really been given any by the factory overlords I guess and his motivation actually made sense. Now I'm wondering if the creators really just thought of a cool villain concept and backstory and just wrote the movie around that

Ugly Dolls was an actual toy line. I think that's why the designs aren't very creative. I've watched this movie before, and I think the "ugly dolls" are the villain's. 1, when Moxy came to the "perfect" world, she realized that its not a good place to be, and that uglyville is way better, but noooooo. 2 the only reason Lou did everything that happened in the movie as because of them, because if they just realized that it wasn't the place for them then he wouldn't get mad and stuff. 3, they just ignored Lou's backstory? think about it, Lou was perfect, all he wanted was to be an official doll, but he couldn't, and then these "ugly dolls" came, even when they were living happily, they went for their selfish needs. they barely even worked to be an official doll, imagine how frustrated and sad Lou would be when he knew that he couldn't achieve his only dream when he is perfect for it, but these dolls that aren't even supposed to be here could do it? Lou has seen many dolls do the only thing he can't, his heart must be broken. Because of that he became evil, and then these ugly dolls made it even worse by rubbing it in. Conclusion: Lou was just frustrated and sad because the ugly dolls did something they weren't supposed to do, and it was a selfish thing as well. And that thing was Lou's dream, which he saw many people achieve except him. That was the best I could explain it lol, basically Lou was just hurt and stuff. Thank you for coming to my ted talk

@aleyssavillagran89974 жыл бұрын
Ok so this is my first ever comment after years of KZbin. That how passionate I feel about this. Lou could have been redeemed in one of the most amazing ways. You completely right about everything. All he ever wanted was to be own by someone and be a "real" doll. Because of this he tried so hard to be perfect!...and then these dolls come in and are perfect without even trying? Then not only that but they let him be physically abused by the dog and then turn him into a forever injured custodian. You know what would have been a better ending? Lou being able to leave and find someone...but as one of those special collectors dolls. Then he could be loved and admired like he always wanted, while still being clean and "perfect" forever because he would be in his special box. (Like the old guy from toy story 2) I guess they were going for something different by making a kids movie where they showed not everyone could be redeemed....but it was at the expense of an amazing lesson. Not everyone's version of perfect or good is the same thing and that's ok! For the ugly dolls it ment being themselves and for lou it ment being prim and proper and both are ok. Just imagine if instead the movie was about a girl wanting to be a girly girl vs a girl wanting to be a Tom boy...neither are wrong and neither are necessarily right. You can be who you are as long as its not at the expense of others.
@privadomj33864 жыл бұрын
@@aleyssavillagran8997 you’re right, I just think that for a kids movie maybe they should have a happier ending, even if Lou doesn’t get what he wanted. At least something good must happen to him, but I guess that will ruin the lesson of the story. I just wanted to rant about that lol, but what you said is definitely true

A better plot wouldve been giving us the reason for the defects, pink girl gets told she could become perfect if she restarts the machine, goes through it again and becomes one of the many basic dolls, then a normal/perfect doll spends enough time with her friends and others to realize it makes them unique and stops her.

Someone briefly mentioned this, but it honestly bothers me that so many stories have the "imperfections are beautiful" storyline, and then NEVER include disabled people??? The closest we get is blind people, but they don't even comit to that, because it's usually just glasses and then that's it! Blindness over! Just get glasses! Honestly, I had this problem with toy story 4 too, where I thought Gabby Gabby's redemption was her finding another kid with a stutter or some other speaking disability, which to me, would have been so much more impactful! I'm disabled, and my favorite toy used to be this furreal dog my parents got me when I was little, and guess what? This toy never even worked, but I still loved her regardless. This might sound morbid, but why couldn't they have ripped a dolls arm, or legs off? Ripping the characters legs off would give a good way to insert more character design as you can think, what would their chair be made of, what would it look like? Maybe one of the dolls could have been inspired by people with down syndrome, even autism, but no? Because, to our world, imperfections are beautiful until they're ugly imperfections. (To my fellow disabled people, please know that you are beautiful, no matter what anyone says! You don't have to prove your worth, if all you can do some days is lie in bed, I completely understand that, and you're welcomed to do so! Don't feel like you have to work a 9-5, don't think you have to get all straight A's, don't think you have to give your all to a world that rarely gives any back. You're beautiful, you're important, and you matter! And remember, from the bottom of my heart, your imperfections are beautiful, they're apart of you after all! 💓)
@valverios3 жыл бұрын
I dont think you understand how blindness works
@scribbles_spills_the_ink3 жыл бұрын
@@valverios Looking back I don't think I worded this well, but what I meant was usually disabilities are fixed by really loose things. I've seen quite a few bits of media where the fact that a character can't see is a big part of their story, and then somewhere a long the way the character gets glasses and now has 20/20 vision. Glasses can definitely help blind people, but it doesn't get rid of it entirely. The best disabled rep, in my mind at least, is Avatar the Last Airbender. Toph is never magically healed, nor is her disability seen as a bad thing. Her disability is a part of her, a part of her that she's adapted to and made into a strength. I regrettably can't remember his name, but there's another character who's in a wheelchair, and instead of staying on the ground, or being magically healed, he and his father work together to find a way for him to fly with the other air benders. That's real disabled rep, adapting. A lot of disabled people will tell you that even if there was a magical cure-all, they probably wouldn't take it, because their disability as become just as apart of them as having brown eyes is, or having dark skin is. Often media, even media aimed to teach kids to love their imperfections, negate disabled kids. They don't give us kids with stutters, they don't give us kids who are wheelchair users, or kids that are totally blind, kids who are deaf, or chronically ill. I don't know if it's because the writers are afraid of criticism, just genuinely forget that disabled characters are an option, or think that a story centered on disabled characters must be a sad one, but what ends up happening is instead of saying "Imperfections are beautiful." It says, "Imperfections are beautiful to a point."

The weirdest thing about this movie is that there was already ugly dolls media out there and this movie completely ignores it. There were these ugly guides to general things in life that had this fun surreal, cynical edge to them. If this movie kept the characters personalities the same as the books and kept the general tone of them, it could’ve been really good.

I don’t have time to watch this rn but one of the things that pissed me off about this movie was the villain, once his whole thing of him being upset about never going to get sent out and that he was sad and hurt, my first thought was “oh he’s gonna get a redemption ark. There’s gonna be a little cute montage of him getting played with by a kid.” But then it just didn’t?? He just got stuffed in a washer and that’s it, like even if they wanted to punish him I feel like they could have even just still sent him out to an especially rowdy kid or something, but no he gets no redemption, just suffering, and that just really sat wrong with me, the whole time I was watching I was just like “okay it’s not a good movie and it’s hella predictable but at least this one(1) character is sorta decent, can’t wait to see how he develops” and they almost got there, his whole tragic backstory, but then nothing. Big sad.
