Today we are going to talk about the Gibson L6 Midnight Special which is the lowest-end, but least common to see member of the Gibson L6-S Family. The L5-S was introduced in 1972 as the highest-end Solid Body Gibson that was the solid version of the very popular L5 Archtop guitar. The L6-S is a stripped down version of the L5-S. The L6-S was introduced in 1973, but in 1974 a 2nd version called the L6-S Deluxe was birthed, so the original L6-S was renamed the L6-S Custom to avoid confusion. The Midnight Special was a Bolt-On Neck version that had most of the features of the L6-S Deluxe, but a few from the Custom as well. These are quirky Gibsons but I had a good time with this one!

Hey Trogly, I've been a KISS fan for a long time(please dont hold it against me) & I could of swore on my KISSology DVD set that Kiss played on The Midnight Special on 4-1-75 Paul Stanley played the whole gig of two or three songs with it and it sounding great through his Marshall stack. I could've sworn it was White but could have been Natural as well. I also remember him in Guitar World that he was a Firebird Flying V and Explorer guy and that the L-6 or Midnight Special, "Gibson gave me 3 guitars, the Les Paul Sunburst I sold cause that year was still lean in the pocket, the other two were new guitars they wanted me to try out so I played the beter of the two on The Midnight Special." I thought it looked good on him watching it for the first time in the 90s. Unfortunately, it must have not made an impression on him cause he moved onin the interview. Just KZbin search: Kiss Midnight Special and you can watch their whole performances or one song at a time.

Kiss endorsed Gibson. Ace played Les Pauls, Gene played Rippers and Grabbers and Paul Flying Vs and Firebirds. And yes, he’s been seen using this guitar live and not just for breaking. However, this model was the one he smashed nightly. They got them from Gibson for $65 a guitar and they were almost all factory seconds.

I was buying these for $400-$500 in super clean shape about 6 years ago often, sometimes parting them. Underrated guitars. Most people hate them, but they are bargain basement vintage gibsons, in the next few years you'll see these shoot up.

"Fixed" one of these for a friend. It was a beater, repainted at least twice. Strangely.... it had a hand-done?, slightly scolloped neck that was beautifully done job. I rewound the bad Gibson bridge PU, (humbuckers) and a (hot rewind). New controls, then coil split the rewound bridge. I re-inforced the weak neck joint to improve tuning stability and man.... for a beat up and mistreated instrutment.... it plays and sounds great. Looks rough.

Nice job...I have one of these Midnight Specials....Gibson says that from the serial number, it's 74-75. According to Gibson, the logo was silk screened on these maple headstocks, but on mine, the logo has completely worn away...but there's no mistaking this baby...and Gibson offered to 'refinish' the headstock...for $525! Imagine paying that for a guitar worth barely twice that! I was reluctant to remove the pickups for exactly this reason!. Someone also added a small dip switch too - actually drilled through the body to mount it just below the selector switch. I think it puts the pickups in/out of phase, but I can't be sure. The guitar plays and sounds great! Thanks again!

Thank you for showing this guitar, I have been trying to find out what Gibson guitar I had back in the early 80’s when I was a teenager, I remember it having a maple bolt on ,neck, no black veneer on the headstock, it was slab body, and a really narrow neck at the nut, it had had a sparkle matron paint job, I had thought it was an L6S but it looked different to them, then I saw you reviewing this L6 midnight special and it all fell into place, that’s what my guitar was, I’m in Scotland and it had a small sticker in the rear of the headstock that said Lynns Guitars Knoxville TN. Thank you Troglys 👍 further - I’ve just found out it was an L6-S midnight Special in a rare custom burgundy sparkle and a little more than 30 ever made.

I've got an old Encore clone of the L6S. 2 volumes, 1 tone, with some old korean/japanese unpotted 5k wound humbuckers. Has the harmonica bridge and tailpiece from the base L6S, but no rotary switch. All mahogany, from the body to the neck to the fretboard, with a darker cherry body, and the back of the neck painted a darker transparent brown. Fretboard and some dings in the body are the only places the natural color shows through. Love the thing. Just replaced the original pots a few weeks ago, since it had linear volume knobs and the original wiring had lost most of its shielding and would occasionally short. At one point I had planned on trying to swap its 3 way switch for a rotary knob, but at the time I couldn't find the appropriate tone circuit without just buying an original, and at 18 I couldn't spend $700 for another of the same guitar I had in my hands. Similarly, I couldn't lay down $300 each for a pair of tarbacks for my $300 guitar.

My first guitar was a 73 L6S I bought used in 1982 for $220. I still have it and still love it. The best thing about that guitar is the combination of the Superhumbuckers and the 6-way selector. That's what makes the guitar unique. For me, all the other models...the Midnight Special, the Deluxe...without that combo, were sort of like....why bother?

The discolouration at the picup screw holes looks more like oxidation or grease from the screws into the lacquer, the sticking is normal for nitro laquer, and the discoloration on the side looks like sweat residue that didn’t get wiped away, and the guitar left in the sun. But hard to say tbh.

One thousand thanks. Now I finally know WHICH 24 fretted guitar Mike Oldfield used to record Incantations in 1977-78, as well as he played on the Exposed Tour ( 1979 ) and the Knebsworth Festival in 1980. This guitar can be very clearly seen both on the Exposed DVD (only released in 2005) and the Knebsworth video available on VHS in 1980. I thought it was not a Gibson but an unknown custom built 24 fretted guitar he needed for Incantations. But it seems the great master didn't like it very much, since in 1981 he returned to his SG Junior with only one pickup. This until he moved to PRS about 1989-1990, as his main solid body two humbucker guitar. I was introduced to PRS by Mike with his Tubular Bells 2 video, in 1992. Presently, PRS are my favourite guitars too. All the best !

@@toddflowers8052 It started out as "In Concert," which was on ABC and they would actually film rock concerts at various venues. Later, Don K started taking more of a direct hand in it and introducing the acts, by which point I think they had started filming at a soundstage, or at least started staging the concerts specifically for the show rather than just filming a concert as it was happening. Became more along the lines of Midnight Special. (and also, that's when Paul Schaeffer started doing the great impersonation of Don K on SNL). The "In Concert" era was by far the best because it was the only way to see actual concerts in their native habitat. I remember vividly the Alice Cooper concert, the Allman Bros., many others. I was in junior high school, too young to actually go to concerts, so I never missed an episode of In Concert. And unlike Midnight Special, which featured groups of various genres, In Concert stuck to rock, which I favored. Didn't have to sit through Helen Ready to get to Beck Bogart and Appice!

I bought mine in 1978, and I still have it. It looks slightly different in the arrangement of the toggle switch and plug in jack. On mine the plug in is above the two dials and closer to the tail. My toggle switch doesn't have the black thing around it. I played it for years in Gigs and it has a unique sound with the P-90s or Bill Lawrence pickups. As a bottom line guitar, it actually has been very reliable and dependable. I also prefer it in recording, maybe because I am just so used to it. it plays very easily. Great fingering ease with that slim neck. I just love the sound of the P-90s too. They are somewhere between a Jazz and a Blues sound. The L-6 looks vaguely like this guitar but it also looks different. I don't know if the L-6 had Bill Lawrence pickups.

My first electric guitar bought in 1975 and I loved it. I sold it a few years back because it was going to need a fret job. It was named Midnight Special after Kiss played the show. Stanley had a bunch of these and the first ones were a cream color with glitter. Those, and the wine red versions are rarer than the naturals. All midnight specials had maple fretboards. On this one the input and tone pot positions have been switched and the pickup selector plastic backplate is not original.

At least 2 knowledgable guys looked at them and told me, it would be easier to replace then to ever get the Tar out of those. So that is what I did, got some pickups from a friend, I know one was a Gibson, the other might have been a GFS. Put it back together and sold it. It did sound good with the new pickups in it.

The "stains" are just wood figuring. It is just a bit of uneven figuring at that spot of that wood, no "10-tops" there haha. All hard maple body. I have one as well, its been repainted, tuners exchanged, original neckplate missing, pickguard missing and quite heavy wear. Electronics original. Easy to chord on neck and it does have a very special and snappy sound, especially for a humbucker guitar. Neck position with gain gives a sort of Yngwie-esque sound. But in general it is as far from an "all-purpose" guitar you can get. It IS weird. But its cool to be a member of only 2000 worldwide exclusive club and it looks cool. Thank you for the video, now thats us with 2 of them, where are the other 1998? :)

I have an early one of these, these are very interesting guitars. Since Paul Stanley used them I've even thought about the bolt on neck being a way to have them broken and then re-used if any parts were still useable, because Gibson wasn't too fond of guitars being broken. Another interesting detail is that some of these had a bevelled side a la SG and some didn't, some had a faint one. I think it's the better sounding version of the L6.

That is just a beautiful finish on this. It has aged beautifully, It could almost use a rosewood fingerboard to contrast it up, but that's not really an issue. Oddly, the issue with the separation lines on the neck look just about non existent in the blacklight. A nice piece of odd Gibson history.

A good Brazilian rosewood fretboard would add depth and warmth to the slappy-sounding full maple instrument, it'd be a great addition... If you manage to get Brazilian rosewood...

I think someone switched the positions of the tone pot and the output jack; usually the pots and the switch are in a diagonal line.

Somebody swapped out the tone cap for a larger one I think on that guitar. I do that on some of my basses. I bet if you look at that tone cap it's going to be bigger then usual. People like 0.022 (the tone knob is much more subtle and all the way on is a good rock tone still), but it won't get as dark as that L6 is (someone swapped it to get more jazz tones). When I changed my one bass to a 0.1 it does that same thing as yours is doing.

I don't know if it's being pointed out yet or not, but I just realized that your logo has the model that Gibson is suing over. The dean VX. I thought that was pretty funny.

I have one of the rarest Cream Sparkle versions of these. Wikipedia says there were only 160 of these made! Trogly, would you help me appraise my rare one? The nut really is crazy thin, but aside from that it has a great feel, especially for thin, medium and small handed players and women. I am practically the first owner: it was given to me by my cousin in maybe '76! As my first guitar I will likely keep it forever, It's a rock steady simple guitar! I have the original plastics, but I've custom changed everything including knobs and truss cover to blonde and the guitar is actually quite a looker now. To me, my custom blonde appointments make this more of a boutique beauty that the rocker black plastics. Cream Sparkle with blonde appointments... in the plush purple Gibson case it looks like a more valuable guitar than perhaps it really is. I wish I could post a show off picture. The neck pickup is really beefy and the bridge is quite cutting. Lots of tonal sweep on these. It's a bit odd, but for more than sentimental reasons it's a keeper.

I think that guitar is a thing of beauty. Could it really be possible that it was named after the TV show, though? Wouldn't it more likely be named after the same song that the TV show was named after? Midnight Special was a standard blues/R&B song that lots of rock bands picked up on, most notably CCR.

When you said you broke it, I thought you did what Paul Stanley did to his on The Midnight Special when KISS appeared. (Can’t really see it due to the smoke, but Paul smashed the white one at the end of “Black Diamond” on the show.)

Why does gibson use multiple pieces of wood to make their necks? Im a fender guy so my knowledge on gibsons is limited, but i enjoy your videos, i just notice that alot of the gibsons you feature have multi piece necks. For the price they charge i would think they’d use one piece. It seems cheap.

Epiphone was bought by gibson in 1957 so the comment on the Kalamazoo brand being prior to Epiphone being bought doesn't make sense seeing as how the sg body style was only released in 1961?

Are there any markings on the neck heel or the body where the neck bolts on? It would be interesting to see if Gibson did something similar to what Fender did/does as far as dating things goes. Thanks for the channel!
