If Amrik can fix Chris Olson’s counters I’ll make him the head coach of all of my clinics, and I’ll be the assistant

This is one of the best pb vids I've watched. Seems like 90% of instructional vids focus on the same things... Just different YT'ers saying the same stuff. This one presented very specific actions to take and the reason behind those actions as well what to look for to initiate the counter. 👍🏾

I've also recently discovered that staying low isn't just useful at the kitchen. If you have trouble returning low hard hit serves, the simple act of lowering your viewpoint down closer to the level of the ball makes it sooo much easier to handle.
@LeanneSchultz-x3y8 ай бұрын
Thirds are easier too if you get low
@johnp18 ай бұрын
Right on. This is why tennis pros lower their bobies when returning first serves.

Chris, look at the shape of his 'hand' at the finish after contact and compare that to yours. You have a twist, almost slice motion through contact vs. block and push. Because of that, you feel the need to make a swing, as it's the only way for you to come 'over' the ball to hit down. It would be interesting if you took a video of yourself going between a reset and a counter. See of the wrist movement is similar and if your 'finish' shape is optimal for accuracy and pace. Great job...thanks for sharing. Sent it to over 30 people already!

Chris, your approach to improvement in this video is excellent. I especially like the counter drill where they feed you a slower ball to work on form and the idea of putting a water bottle behind your feet to help prevent movement. Thanks for sharing! 9:00 around this part of the video is my issue with his instruction. He is holding a heavy backhand position and ready for a backhand. You had a neutral position so of course your paddle moved more, it had to go backwards and then forward again, also it surprised you. He would have more movement if he held his paddle like you were
@PickleballStudio8 ай бұрын
This is true, but the point still stands. You can watch his slow mo examples to see him in more of a neutral stance. Mine is very excessive movement for what is necessary.
@DannyBPlays8 ай бұрын
@@PickleballStudio I agree, but it would have been better to see him do it with a reaction from a neutral position to see the proper way to react and position after the hit

Awesome lesson. Love the effort you put into the drills. Looking carefully at your eyes , it seems you are not following the ball to the paddle. You are gauging where the ball will make contact, which will make your hit less smooth and precise.

Thanks Chris and Amrik for a great video/teaching tool! I'm very new to Pickleball, and I know I make many of the same mistakes, as well as others. Now I understand the imortance of bending my knees and really getting low, leaning forward and being ready, and not leaning back. Can't wait to try the corrections on the court! Also, the explanation of Ben Johns movement taking dinks on court was very helpful. I'm in Cuenca, Ecuador and don't have all the resources available, that we're used to in the US. There are quite a few hard core picklers here, but we have to broom, sweep, and groom (blow leaves) our 3 courts every day.

When volleying / punching, in additional to the leaning forward and keeping your swing to a minimum, also notice his feet and leg position, they are much more bent than yours. Getting low and being able to spring upwards and forward (from the lean) is where all of his body mechanics works in sync of each other to generate the power, which is why he doesn't need to do a pull back big swing. You also need to add the mindset of being ready to pounce and counter each ball hit by your opponent. Any of his balls should be expected to be a speedup. Having your body in that bent and lower position will help you anticipate and react to a potentially speed up, but it can also give you the upper edge on attacking a back return. It works both ways.

This was a fantastic video and some of the best instruction I have seen. I wish he was in Northern Virginia. My one question is in regards to this stance and defending lobs. Some of my play partners have gotten very good at disguising offensive lobs and I find that when I am anticipating the speed up, getting low and weight forward, I get caught off guard when the lob comes and I'm too slow to react and get back. Any thoughts?
