I Took European Girl For Traditional Grandmas Food In Katowice 🇵🇱

In this episode I go for a meal at a local Polish traditional restaurant in Katowice with European girl. Restaurant U Babuni is rustic restaurant offering Polish dishes in a country-style semi wooden architecture and dining room with stone pillars & wooden accents. In Katowice it was not easy to come across a traditional local Polish restaurant, there was many kebab shops and burger shops and bakeries. The restaurant we found looked really traditional inside with old decorations with a village theme and a cosy welcoming atmosphere. I ordered a nice big juicy pork knee served with cabbage with ham and mushrooms inside with a few slices of Polish bread and Tyskie beer and a shot of traditional Polish Soplice alcohol. The second meal ordered was a fried cheese in breadcrumbs with boiled potatoes with a homemade creamy sauce with cucumbers inside. Overall I enjoyed the food it was Delicious I actually wonder if a granny really did cook it?

Andre, while you're in Katowice you should try thing called "Rolada Śląska" it's a meat roll filled with kiełbasa, onion and bacon. Usually it's served with silesian potato dumplings and red cabbage. :)

Upper Silesia, with its capital Katowice is quite a different experience to normal Poland. The people there speak a local language called Silesian and identify as such, have their own traditional food and culture they celebrate that is a little different from general Polish cuisine and culture. German and Czech influences are in their way of life and language to a higher degree than it is in the rest of Poland. It is a region where a lot of coal mines used to operate and they are very proud of this history.

Let me add one more to this. This name probably comes from the French "misérable", which means simply misery. And the name came from the fact that it was the food of the poor, cucumber and cream were something that every peasant could afford.

And as some people have already written in the comments, the BEST traditional regional dish is 'Kluski śląskie, rolada i modro kapusta' - Silesian dumplings, roulade and red cabbage. There is a good restaurant in one of neighboring cities. 'Szyb Maciej' in Zabrze. Delicious food and nice industrial decor&vibes. Maybe there is a restaurant like this in Katowice, but I don't know Katowice well enough.

André, if you're still in Katowice you should try visiting the place called "Żurownia". They have traditional Silesian food with a bit of modern twist.

And of course visit Nikoszowiec - it's an old Katowice district where one of the first coal miners lived. There you have "Cafe Byfyj" with traditional Silesian food. By the way you should visit "Park Śląski" which is one of the biggest parks in the Europe (even bigger than Central Park!), it is in between 2 Silesian cities - Katowice and Chorzów. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silesian_Park

Im from Katowice, you should check Silesia Park (Park Śląski), Saucer (Spodek), Sspecially in the evening - City Market (Rynek), Silesian museum (Muzeum Śląskie), Mariacka street (Mariacka). I recommend regional dishes Żurek (Soap with egg and sausage), Rolada z kluskami i czerwoną kapustą (Roulade with dumplings and red cabbage) Hope you like this place

"Zubrowka" , the original one with bison grass in the bottle has a specific taste and is drunk with apple juice or as a shot. In the restaurant they served you a version as pure vodka. The one with grass is kind of yellow in color. And as if you want to try a good vodka that can be drunk without additives like juices, because it is sweet on its own, I recommend "Zolądkowa gorzka", it is yellowish in color. In general, vodka is a Polish invention. And this "sauce" is not tzatziki, but "mizeria" cucumber in cream, not in yogurt, and this is served to dishes as a kind of salad, but for fried cheese ( preferably camembert-type cheese ) is more suitable "jam" from cranberries" . If you would like to eat a Polish appetizer, I would suggest "Tartar" is raw beef, served with raw egg yolk, seasoned with pepper and salt and added is onion and often pickled cucumbers finely chopped. Or so-called "cold legs", good with vodka just like mushrooms marinated in spirit vinegar. Cold legs or otherwise leg jelly, is pig's legs , or rather the meat from them, but the part below the knuckle you ate in the jelly formed during their cooking, this is served cold with spirit vinegar. And the thing on the wall is called a "scythe" used to collect/cut mainly grain with it, but also grass, once there was an uprising in Poland, where peasants used it as a weapon, only it was a little differently constructed and they were called "scythers". ;)

Hallo Andre, I saw your tour on Polish traditional food (quite all, i love ur style), and I haven;t seen that u r trying polish "Grochówka". One of the best polish soup in my opinion. Real Polish Grochówka schould be very dense (like the best Żurek). Many variations, but dense is the best. U were in Poznań, and u didn't eat "Szare kluski" with onion and becon. We have many more delicious traditional, local food. U tried like 40% of our traditional food. But remember, the best polish food we have in ur houses, by moms and grandmoms :)
