I have been snacking on fish products and eating fish as follows: snacks; cod livers in their own oil on a round of bread (amazon); pickled herring, anchovies. I eat wild salmon seared in a pan and cod I make in a court-bouillon or in a butter caper sauce in a pan. My omega quants have increased. Real food works better for this.

As kids we were forced to take cod liver oil, but as soon as I grew older I stopped. Started getting sinusitis several times each winter, in my 20's, and then one winter after having had it three times (my doctor always prescribed antibiotics without testing me basically), I started with the cod liver oil again. Never had it again, and I'm in my 50's now.

I had an eye Dr visit coming up and looked on KZbin for some ideas or inspiration and found you. I talked with my Dr about the PRN product and he said that he had heard good things about Omega3, but just didnt know enough about it? This is a GREAT eye Dr in a very nice suburb of Houston! So I bought the PRN product off of Amazon and it has been amazing! I am now on my 3rd bottle. My 8 year old daughter will look at my eyes sometimes and ask me if I am crying or going to cry. I dont know if my eye ducts (?) have gone on overdrive now that they have the Omega3, but I dont have symptoms anymore. Thank you for your great presentation. It worked for me.

Omg I swear my algorithm is starting to read my mind! Was literally just thinking about my dry eyes today and wondering if suppliments are even effective and what suppliments work best and then your video came up on my feed! Thank you for sharing this! I do take omega three for mental health, but not very consistently and only at about half the recommended dose. Lately my dry eyes, especially on my left eye, have been way worse than normal (especially when i sleep for some reason), but ive also been quite infrequent with my suppliment lately too. I'm going to switch up to a full dose and do it regularly and see what happens. I will probably still go get my eyes checked out soon, but I feel like this cant hurt! Thanks for sharing ❤

Have suffered from deliberating watery eye (blepharitis) for almost 10 years. Been to see 2 eye specialists multiple times who put me on all the conventional treatments several times, including antibiotics. Nothing worked and it was booked in for a DCR operation in a couple of months. On seeing this video I thought I would give a high quality omega 3 a try. 3 months on 2-3 grams of omega 3 did nothing for me. As a last resort I upped the omega 3 dose to 5 grams a day of the best quality oil I could find. After 60 days my watery eye symptoms had almost disappeared. I have been symptom free for 2 months now and am continuing on 5 grams of oil every day. High dose omega 3 have been life changing for me. Thank you for making this video!

Pretty severe dry eye symptoms is something I at 75 of age only recently began to experience . . . for the last 3 months. And, I've had cataracts developing for about 2 years. I asked two experienced optometrists if there were any dietary or nutritional inputs which could ameliorate either of these two conditions, and both seemed surprised by the question; and both said no, and both recommended that aside from eventual surgery for the cataracts in the next 12 months or so, only eye drops and mild heat treatment would help . . . for the rest of my life. This video is, pardon the phrase, a real eye opener. I'm especially interested in the Omegaquant test which I'll followup on. Thanks you, doctor for a well produced video. Very helpful.

I read something about Melatonin supplementation possibly being good against that quote: "This study showed that melatonin delayed cataract formation and progression in diabetic rat lenses. It may increase the levels of GSH, inhibit oxidative stress, diminish the activity of polyol pathway enzymes, and thus protect the lens transparency." Your cells are capable of making it but you need to be exposed to the heat of the sun. There's also Astaxanthin which is a pigment extracted from seaweed. It's what gives lobster, salmon and flamingo their pink color. Astaxanthin has long been shown to defend aging eyes against the threat of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Not medical advice.

The Omega-3 has been a huge help for me. I don't take the fancy stuff the doc talked about, just the Nature Made from the supermarket. I used to take the eye health formula that Thera-Tears makes, but TBH the supermarket stuff is works fine at a fraction of the price. It's great, if I don't forget to take it my eye will do really well... of course when my eyes do well enough for long enough I'm bound to start falling out of the habit in a somewhat unfortunate cycle, but as long as I resume as soon as I notice symptoms it's not terrible. I've never tested my omega levels though, I just know my eyes stop hurting. It also helps to ensure that my hair and eyebrows are well trimmed (also checking the eyelashes is a good idea, although I rarely have a misaligned eyelash some people get them and need to pluck them) ... if I can pull any hair at any angle to reach my eyes, even if it looks fine in its normal resting position, there's probably a time when it is getting in my eyes and keeping it cut way back prevents that. A humidifier helps a little, eye drops and warm compresses provide temporary but welcome immediate relief.

To get the benefits of the Melatonin the Pineal gland produces before you sleep, make sure you are in darkness two hours before going to sleep. If you live in the city, block the neighbor's lights from the windows so that you will sleep in total darkness also try to go to sleep at the same time every day. Do not look at devices such as computers, cell phones or iPads two hours before going to sleep as it negatively affects the circadian cycle and may prevent the Melatonin release. The Melatonin produced by the pineal gland in the body before you go to sleep is something that helps you sleep but it's also a highly potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It can help against arthritis and oxidative damage. People who have jetlag from having flown to a different latitude sometimes take supplements of it before going to sleep to help set their body to the new time zone they are in.

I took fish oil supplements for about 2 years about 8 years ago. I think it was 1200mg - 360mg Omega-3 daily. My heart started missing beats not long after I started taking it, and slowly got worse, until it developed into arrhythmia. The arrhythmia kept getting worse, and got so bad I would almost pass out, because my heart would stop for 3-4 seconds sometimes. I never thought it could be anything to do with the fish oil, but I believe now it was. I had to finally get a heart ablation procedure about 7 years ago because the arrhythmia was killing me. My heart is functioning normal now, and the heart ablation really saved my life. I can't prove that fish oil caused my arrhythmia, but after doing a lot of searching on the internet I've found others with the same problem with fish oil, and even found a study from Sweden that mentioned some people getting heart arrhythmia from taking fish oil. I think this is very rare, and a very small percentage of people ever experience this problem with fish oil, but I'm telling people this in the event you start taking fish oil, and your heart starts to miss beats, stop taking it immediately. I've tried taking fish oil a couple of times after my heart ablation, as an experiment, and my heart would start missing beats in 2-3 days. You can buy algae oil instead of fish oil. Fish oil is often contaminated, while algae are produced in clean tanks. BTW fish also get their omega 3 from algae, they don’t produce it. So you can just skip the middle man and go right to the source.

I take cod-liver oil every day and I swear it's an eye saver. I have been an insulin dependant diabetic for over 30 years, and I had started to show signs of early stage retinopathy in my scans around 4 years ago. After that, I started taking cod-liver oil every day, and within 2 years I had actually reversed the damage. My eye-doctor was very surprised. He said if he didn't personally know me, he would have assumed my scans from 4 years ago, compared to 2 years ago were from a different person. He said my current scans do not indicate that I am a diabetic at all. I can only put this down to the cod-liver oil which is very rich in omega 3 and also contains vitamin A and D. Nothing else changed during that period. The only thing with cod-liver oil is that you have to make sure you don't overdose on the vitamin A.

That being said, imho, if something works for an individual that is what matters to that individual. I might give this a try. If it doesn't help, it doesn't seem like bad side effects are likely. I'm so glad your video showed up on my feed. I started taking Omega 3 oil tablets during COVID, for general health. About a year into it, I "discovered" I no longer needed reading glasses, which most people post 40 years old will need due to blurry reading. The only thing I changed in my diet and lifestyle once I got reading glasses, was fish oil tablets. Little to no change in anything else. When I went for my full eye exam, the doctor could not explain it, other than to say I still needed glasses to read (for distance, which I need anyway). I asked again: I no longer need reading glasses at all, in fact, I have to take them off to read. Crickets 😂 I also googled this phenomenon and no known cases, or discussions on this, were found. More crickets 😂 Amazing stuff! Thanks again!

Thanks Doctor. I started taking Omega 3 like 4 years ago as my eye doctor suggested me for my dry eye. At the beginning, I did not feel a big difference after I took Omega 3, but I do feel my dry eye issue is lessor, but still dry. One time, I finished by Omega 3 and did not buy another bottle right away, so I stopped for like 2-3 weeks, then I realized that my dry eye issue was getting worse significantly. Then, I bought another bottle of Omega 3 and started to take it daily, my eyes feel a lot better. So, your suggestion to keep the Omega 3 within eyesight, is a good idea. I also suggest to keep extra bottle to avoid running out. Thanks again Doctor.

I check regularly because of a family history of glaucoma and when I told my doctor, she said that there are no studies to back up that omega 3s could lower eye pressure and didn't think it was something worth exploring further. About 12 years ago, i started to take 'Omega 3 and collagen powder' supplements every evening, and it has changed my quality of life completely. My eye health improved over a period of 8 weeks, and the erosions reduced dramatically in that time period. These days i still follow the same regime, but have the collagen three times a week only. My eye erosion is now only occasional, and peaks when the pollen count is high. But after 12 years of use, i am happy with my eye health overall.

It was really timely to find this video that you dropped today. Thanks for taking the time to make it. I just re-started my omega 3's today after 6 week break. I stopped taking them when I was having a significant skin sensitivity reaction to doxycycline (prescribed for Ocular rosacea; I was just fed up with it all and needed a break). I could tell the impact on my eyes within 1 hour of taking the first dose of O' 3's. Readers might not believe it but there was a cooling impact on the surface on my eye. I've had reactions after eating certain foods - for example, if I drink a hot barley drink that's an alternative to coffee, the surface of my eyes will feel gritty to the point that it feels like I'm in a sandstorm in the dessert or at the beach on a windy day. You might guess that I don't drink the barley drink anymore. I tried the drink when it was a cooled temperature and it still made my eyes a little uncomfortable (gritty), but not to the same extent when the product is consumed hot. I've never checked omega-3 levels in my blood. I take Systane brand, but I am looking to try another one. The one mentioned in the video was suggested by my eye doc too.

Thanks for sharing this, Paula. I have never tried barley drink before but I will keep a lookout to try it. I know with rosacea...heat can be a trigger for some people. I know IPL treatments have also helped a lot of people with rosacea, and if demodex is associated with the rosacea, then topical ivermectin cream is growing as a popular treatment. @@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks very much for your compassionate reply. IPL is next... The barley drink was INKA: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inka_(drink). It was a coffee substitute for me. Other varieties exist - such as Caf-Lib.

After all my constant research i finally came upon a product called Rosadyn. Took it religiously and within a month major improvement in my rosacea. It flares now and then if I eat spicy food or drink something hot, take a hot shower, but otherwise is essentially gone. Just wanted to pay if forward. 40$ a bottle is totally worth it.

Have you tried roasted dandelion tea as a coffee sub? It's soooo delicious and healthy.

@@koalamama2 Nice of you to suggest an alternative. There is some evidence that drinking tea is not helpful for persons with ocular rosacea (OR), and I couldn't drink it hot (hot drinks seem to activate the problem further). So I'm trying to learn more about it, and for now, I've decided to take a break from all teas, coffees and substitutes. I've undergone a large shift in my diet due to OR and it's still a work in progress. I'll do anything I can to try to support my eye health and reduce inflammation.

Thanks for the video, glad to hear you got help from omega-3. Out of curiosity, was there a change in weather around the time which your symptoms improved? I've also struggled with my eye glands getting blocked since my teens or so, and I've followed a (mostly, see below) vegetarian diet since my twenties or so. An eye doctor recommended fish-based omega-3 supplements for me some years ago, and eventually I decided to try it despite my diet (I actually tried flaxseed first, but alas it made no difference). My eye gland problem is completely gone, as long as I keep taking omega-3 daily. If I stop, some symptoms return within ~3-5 days. The severity of symptoms depends on the weather (maybe dryness of air?): least symptoms during summer, most during winter. This is why I was curious about the long response time for you. I don't do anything else, like warm eye compresses (I have tried them, too, but it's a bit inconvenient compared to the supplement, and results are less good for me), or special washing.

Very interesting. Out of interest, how much oily fish would you have to eat on a daily basis to be equivalent to the supplement you were taking? I prefer to get my nutrients via eating the right food, but sometimes you would just need to eat too much of a the same thing for it to remain an interesting diet.

This is news to me. Having dry eye for years, this is great news, trying O3 for improvement sounds like a no-brained since is so beneficial in other areas as well. Thank you, Doctor! 👍🏻

Please consdier take vegan omega 3. We make a big show of not using plastic straws to "save fish" and yet think NOTHING about killing 2 trillion fish every year for their flesh/omega3 etc. Fish get their omega 3 by eating sea plants. We can get omega 3 directly from the sea plants they eat INSTEAD OF viciously massacring fish and killing the ocean. I've personally been taking vegan omega 3 for over a year and it's helped me tremendously with my dry eyes

Thank you Dr. Allen for pursuing this topic. I tried fish oil capsules a couple of years ago but my PCP recommended discontinuing that [and aspirin] since I was already on two blood thinners for heart issues and my hematomas were very common on my extremities. Do you think trying the PRN Omega 3s would be okay to take?
@DoctorEyeHealth

Tough to say, there is mixed evidence for omegas causing blood thinning (it may indeed have more to do with the type of vitamin E used as a preservative), but either way, I would default to asking your PCP or other cardiologists about it.

Just started a 3-month regimen of this Omega-3 supplement....fingers crossed! I have had dry eye in my left eye for years due to blocked oil glands, and I'm tired of the blurry vision. It has been difficult, and uncomfortable, to enjoy the scenery while driving round-trip between California and Massachusetts. I tried the VitreousHealth by MacuHealth, but with nominal results. Feeling hopeful about the De3! 💪

You’re a doll. So glad you had the patience to do all that for us. I am also WFPB…but vegan. I take vegan omega 3, black seed oil, flax seed oil, do the electric heating mask, and NuLids. Don’t know which one is making things better, but I work on an airplane, with about 2%-4% humidity. My eyes, skin, hair have been dry for decades. Finally found a real dry eye specialist, and changed to my current regimen, and things got better. Also do Lipiflow once a year. I think the thing that helps the most, is consistency. When you stop…the benefits stop. 👁️👁️

Thanks for sharing this as I know the humidity is also a big factor too. (I have been using a humidifier for years). I just got a about 3 months worth of the vegan algae oil and will be testing my blood again in a few months to see where the levels are at. So hopefully another video lol

The condition known as " dry eye" actually causes your eyes to be watery ( not dry) because the body is trying to keep the tissue hydrated with tears. Dry Eye isn't caused by lack of tears. It's due to the decrease in an oil- like substsnce that coats the tear- moistened eyeball to prevent the moisture from evaporating too rapidly.
