Lots of concerned people in the comments. I've owned an 'Illegal' eBike for the past two years and never had any issues. I've gone as far to stop and talk to the police themselves about it to see what they think. The reality is, if you're responsible, stick to the speed limits and stop at red lights, you'll have absolutely no bother whatsoever. It's the idiots doing wheelies and going 50 in a 20 that ruin it for the rest of us. Clearly Andy knows the implications of going out on it, the power it has etc and that's why you see him being responsible.

Riding on bike paths at speed, though, is a really bad idea. If you crash into someone at speed and hurt them, you're going to have an extra bad time. Because you're riding what is, for all intents and purposes, an unregistered and non-homologated motorcycle on a bike path, probably without a motorcycle license. Legally speaking that's a hair apart from driving a car at speed down that bike path... That will all count against you in court and will add negligence and other such fun things to whatever you are convicted of. Some chap in Australia did jail time I believe. So it's not necessarily that the cops will nab you, it's stuff like that. At least stay on the roads mostly, and if you go on bike paths, creep along at legal e-bike speeds. I'd really like a controller or something you could just set into a limited power mode that matches the legal stuff performance wise. That way you could limit the bike to keep you "honest" in the city center. And apparently you can register an eBike as a motorcycle in the UK; seems like the wise thing to do with a fast bike like this.

When these bikes make the rounds in the USA, teenagers will get on them, wreck, get injured or die, and the courts will be forced to act. The laws are already on the books, 20 mph speed limit, which you can achieve on a kids tricycle in your driveway; it will take a scraped knee or less to give the Nazi Mom's a reason to shut it all down. Even mopeds now, require a license plate, which just proves you paid a fine in advance. Everything European or 'Stralian that is cool and fun, gets abused in the US, and becomes illegal and punishable by the most sever prison system in the world. Just look at alcohol and drugs for examples.

I’ve stopped and chatted to the police on a number of occasions, they liked it. Don’t ride like an idiot and they have no need to hassle you. The MSVA is a laborious process and is grossly outdated. If they modernised it to suit electric mopeds then it would go some way to solving the transport issues in this country. Until then they just make it inaccessible for most people. I’m waiting my certificate but I don’t know if I will bother registering it.

I’ll probably do some work on Sevcon Controllers and make some videos about it as I have a Sevcon in the twizy. Andy if you ever want to get into these peltiers you can pick up a 45L Coleman outdoor esky really cheap, buy a spray bottle of Sika 850ml Sika Boom Expanding Foam to fill up the empty cavities in the cheap esky, buy a cheap triple peltier cooler & unwire it from parallel to rewire it to series. You cut out a vertical section on one side of the esky so that the smaller fans fit inside the esky & seal up the back of the large heatsink to the outside of the esky. So for about 70 quid in your money you would get a super efficient 12v fridge that uses about 80 watt 12v - 15v to have a fridge freezer, all you would need to do is put Aluminium Mesh if you have any laying around so that the section nearest the peltier would remain colder than the partitioned section using the mesh. www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-Thermoelectric-Peltier-Refrigeration-Cooling-Cooler-Fan-System-Heatsink-Kit/382839361132?hash=item5923010e6c:m:mykHFfk0vk8I3UuxJYvL04w

Christopher Roberts check my earlier videos, this pulls about 190A @ 75V, do the maths! This has been a 3-4 year project. I built the battery so I should know 🙄 and with regards to unsprung weight on the rear wheel, yes it can be an issue but in this case it’s not as it’s used mainly for road riding and the motor is quite lightweight. Unless you do a proper mid drive with a 10+ KW mid drive and correct gearing you won’t get better performance, and then you’ve got the noise of the geared drive. I actually like mid drives too (see my Vapour builds) but unless it’s an eMTB or a proper motorcycle frame it’s better to just use a hub.

Christopher Roberts oh dear😅 you haven’t been around here long have you. this is my own DIY bike which I started a few years back, I did loads of experiments and testing and got the power output up to about 14kW, then because of the interest I was getting from the bike, I launched my own ebike parts shop. The bike you see in MY store is a bike that is Tried and tested and that’s why the power is limited (it’s still more than enough) otherwise customers would just run into reliability issues. It’s ok for me because I do this stuff for a living 😁 and can just build a new battery if mine fails.
