I restored a late 68 for my daughter 15 years ago when she 1st started driving. Knowing a VW can break at any time the rules were she had to know how to trouble shoot, tune , adjust valves and change the oil by herself. I told her I never wanted a call where I had to quiz her to find out whats wrong. She knew if the engine wouldn't turn over turn the lites on to see if the battery was connected or it has no spark or cylinder misfiring. She did good.

Reminds me of an old guy I bought a 1963 Thunderbird from. Just a really nice gentleman. As we were doing the deal he took me inside his home and we went to his den to do the paperwork. Only the walls were all these frame pictures of WWII navy aircraft. And photos of him. There was a photo of him leaning against a propeller of a F4U Corsair. I was shocked and he just sort of flippantly said, "Yeah, that was one of the aircraft I flew in the war." I was a 20 year old kid, so he was quite surprised by all my questions. We talked for a few hours. Wish I had a recorder. He flew combat missions over Iwo Jima and Okinawa. When I had to leave he thanked me for listening to his "old man stories." LMAO!!! No, those weren't old man stories. Those were certified badass stories.

That's a sweet find, Mustie - Good On Ya! I've been this lucky only once. I bought a small Kenwood receiver on Craigslist and as a "throw in," the seller asked if I was interested in some old speakers, that were "too big to use." I said yes, since I saw it was two pairs of JBL speakers - one pair of JBL L-100's and one pair of JBL L-100 Centuries. Couldn't load them fast enough. She was glad to be rid of them. Sometimes you're in the right place at the right time.

Years ago i bought an old vw for parts as the owner said "I'm sick of fixxing the POS $450 and its yours The motors no good its run the bearings " and he started it clung clank clunk etc. The body was good so i bought it . I got it home and started the motor and listened It wasnt bearings . It was a roll of insulation tape and a small pair of pliers in the fan. He had been fixing the wire for the licence plate light and they must have fallen over the front of the fan housing. The motor was good. It became a baja bug. i had it for a long time.

Hi Mustie, I have a trick to lubricate horizontal cylinders: take an air blow gun with a piece of hose at the end. Then put some oil into the intake side. Stick the hose into the spark plug hole. When you pull the trigger the air will atomize the oil and it will cover the cylinder walls.
