At the end of the day, they are just processing information based on the enormous amount of data they are trained on. But, you could 100% train a model to play pokemon perfectly. LLM's like GPT are just not trained to play games like this. For background, I am an Associate ML Engineer and going for my masters in Data Science.

Of course you could train a model to play Pokémon well, people have even done it before- but the fact that this AI never learns certain basic type matchups and appears to use moves nearly at random, despite it being the most obvious thing in the world and getting constant feedback, is a good demonstration of how our current LLM models fundamentally cannot “think about things”. It even lets you peer into the way LLMs actually work- it just says stuff that sounds convincing with confidence, synthesized from the stuff it has seen before, with no deeper understanding of what it means. It’s even the same fundamental issue as AI “hallucinations”

I'm sure the type chart was correct. The problem is that chat GPT doesn't really understand context. It's just guessing the next word in the sentence based on the input it gets. When talking about ghost type and its matchups, it knows that "Normal and fighting type moves are a no go" is an appropriate thing to say, but it doesn't really understand what that means. It doesn't know what a ghost type Pokemon is aside from a bunch of text that is associates with the term "Ghost type Pokemon" which is pretty much the explanation for all its blunders and weirdness like trying to send out Jimothy 16 times in a row despite him being fainted. With the part about grass being weak to water, I'm assuming that's the random factor in GPT's answers causing it to say incorrect things. Pretty common for pretty much any AI language model
