If you paint the skirting board first and then mask it off, the tape won’t peel off the woodwork

Will I usually paint the skirtings first and then cut in the wall colour, if you are not confident to cut in using a brush then by all means use tape and if it’s frog tape then yes the yellow one. Remember even allowing gloss to dry it still needs to cure a little so maybe leave a little longer next time before taping. Great job though Will good effort.

Hello mate , im a decorator and if you want your painting to not peel off use the pink tape not the green ones because that one specifically designed to not peel off the paint , cheers

Always sand your walls before and between coats Will, it makes the walls silky smooth and gives the paint something to grip to that's why your paint was lifting where you put the tape.

@j10dya9725 күн бұрын
two tips I use... 1) use painting try inserts or line with tin foil / cling film as saves you cleaning the tray each time. 2) once you lay low tack tape, go over with the colour you're covering first (white if taping the ceiling) then paint your wall colour... it creates a sharper line and if the tape bleeds its the right colour.

11:26 mopping the wall introduced moisture 12:14 water works its way to the lowest point hence the peeling. you can use a micrfibre mitt to remove dust btw. for an easy life, paint the skirting to match the wall. looks more sophisitcated anyway or buy a cutting-in brush with angled tip, dont overload it and take your time.

I would also add a tip that I now vouch by, I actually paint the walls first and like you tape them for the woodwork. So tap the surround and before you paint get a thin bead of caulking (I use the Soudal stuff) and wipe it in the joint of the wood and wall if that makes sense, then go straight over with your white (and I use the Leyland water based as it doesn't yellow) and then immediately remove the tape. What I have learnt is to apply the tape, caulk and paint as absolutely as quick as possible and get the tape straight off - the longer you leave the tape the more likely you will remove the wall paint!

@@WillsWhereabouts Hi Will, if the door hangs flush and doesn't swing open then its a good job well done. The carpenter might have taken a bit to much wood off when he hung the door last time and he only needed a thin sliver like the cardboard to rectify. @jacobsinger511824 күн бұрын
@WillsWhereabouts My wife and I think you did a great job on the bedroom. Far better than most for a 'first go'. Incidentally my wife does the cutting in in our house and she's great at. I was a carpenter for 12 years so I picked up quite a bit in the trade. Try this - dip a 1 inch brush in the pot. Then start by placing the brush exactly on the skirt or wherever you need to cut in where the two lines meet. Then pull the brush along whilst 'spinning' the brush in your fingers. Imagine rolling or twizzling a straw or pen between your fingers. As you spin the brush whilst pulling along it causes the bristles to bunch up to a point. The point creates a perfect line every time. The method is fairly easy and after a few practice goes you'll find that the speed you can create edges is unbelievable. As always we always watch the channel and my wife thinks you are a good laugh when you apply new learning and get over your hurdles like the van fix. If you have some success with the cutting in give us an anonymous shout on the channel. I'm sure you'll take to this idea really well.

What a transformation, the room looks brilliant. Don’t worry about the initial mistakes with the painting, all DIYers have to start somewhere and learn along the way. You will now know for the next room. I would always paint the white areas first (skirting, door and window frames) then let them dry completely before masking those to put colour on the walls. Great video, well done mate!

Great to see you are getting stuck in! The way I decorate a room may differ from everyone else, but what I do is paint the ceiling the same colour as the walls, so you don't have to bother about keeping a straight line which saves a bit of time. Some people may think it will make the room feel closed in & oppressive, but I think it feels more cosy. Plus you don't find yourself subconsciously looking up at any of the wonky mistakes every 5 minutes! As far as the skirting boards are concerned, I tend to let the emulsion go over them slightly, but I run a dry(ish} brush over any thick areas to make it easier to sand down later on. As for the gloss I use a very light brown/ off white colour. Crowns (now discontinued) Irish Coffee, will never goes dull (unlike white!) so it lasts years. Only problem is if you use a contrasting colour on your walls, any wonky paintwork will stand out a mile. It takes practice to get a straight line, so I tend to employ a professional to do the glossing, but if I do it myself I hold a long stick with a soft pad against the wall in one hand & rest my other hand palm down onto the stick so I can steady my hand & draw a nice straight line if you see what I mean? Me personally I would have left that room, the floorboards & the walls longer to dry out before decorating just to get rid of as much excess moisture as possible, plus as any future leakage from the bathroom could potentially wreck your new carpet & underlay if the problem hasn't been fixed properly. As far as the extra electrical cable snipped off in the ceiling rose is concerned, I shouldn't worry about it. I'm guessing it's old redundant wire left over from old disused lighting circuit. Nowadays they tend to run all the wires for the lighting behind the switches rather than up in the ceiling like they used to do, so its nothing to worry about. Have fun, you must be pleased with the end results!

Will, I was always pants at painting edges too with the same trouble as you with tape. A friend said ‘you can do anything with the right tools’….. she was right! Don’t tape at all, get to b&q buy 2 DECENT paint brushes a 3” for the majority of edge work and a 1” or 1/2” for corners and tight areas. Make sure the paint brushes are the ones with the white tips (I think they call them fine filament) they’re cheaper than all the tape you’ve bought 😉 I’m no expert but this works for me….. paint the lines with a large brush in long sweeping strokes, angle the tips into the wall/ceiling edge (the finer tips stop paint getting on the other surface. So, go with me, it’s harder to explain in writing 😁 Place the paintbrush flat on the wall horizontally making sure the corner edge of the bristles are on the wall about 1” away from the ceiling edge. Begin painting horizontally in one long stroke a bit like a rainbow (though not as curved) the middle part of the stroke is what meets the ceiling and forms your straight edge. The next bit is key! This movement really happens all at the same time (trust me, read this, try it with a dry brush first and I promise it will make perfect sense when you have a go). Increase pressure on the bristles and begin changing the angle of the brush so when you reach the ceiling edge you start introducing more of the flat edge and tips of the brush (all the while continuing the rainbow stroke). You naturally will start pulling away from the ceiling straight edge once the whole flat edge and tips of the brush have been used. Tips A good pressure flattens the bristle tips for a sharp edge Too much pressure splays the bristles and will give a jagged edge The more you do it the easier it gets Use a long sweeping stroke Don’t go too slowly or you’ll get more wobble You’ve both done a smashing job on the bedroom, well done guys!

Tip with masking tape, run the sticky side over your jeans a couple of times, takes away some of the tackiness, still enough to stick but not enough to rip paint off, also when roller painting, i've found going right from ceiling to skirting board in one stroke and work your way along, don't get so much overlap as you do with smaller strokes, sometimes leaving what i call a contour map, where you can see the overlap on the walls. great vid and can't wait for the next installment!!

@@WillsWhereabouts I've decorated quite a few rooms over my years as a DIY-er, and for me cutting in freehand with no tape, using a very small brush works best. I paint the walls first, as neatly as I can, but then with the woodwork, I take great care, going really slow and carefully to not get any white on my walls. On occasions where I have used tape in a tight spot, if when removing it you pull it off at 180 degrees, rather than 90 degrees to the direction of travel, it is less likely to pull your paint off. Loving your enthusiasm, btw! And the green looks amazing.

Top marks for using Zinsser. I've had nice results with their 123 primer and paint flaking treatments. Pricey but worth it for peace of mind. Still watching, but the frog tape problem might be because the paint hasn't cured properly - it's not stable. I think I started removing the frog tape straight after painting for this reason but can't quite remember. Other main tip is always use the paint sparingly (quite dry) which means you can then easily feather it all in easily, especially the cutting in of ceilings (the part your roller can't reach) ☺️👍 Edit: The room looks great! ♥️

Pink tape is the lowest tack pull off immediately after painting, I’ve found frog tape to be bad for pulling paint off, use the pink tape from brewers or B&Q’s own brand cheap one, paint your first coat then fill all minor imperfections and spot them back in before doing your second coat, don’t use ready mixed filler as it’s basically concrete, and if your an amateur like me do the finer sanding by hand as you always go to far with an electric sander 😂 these are all things I wish I’d learnt on day one 😂 still learning now and I’m on my second house

Great series and I'm watching with interest, personally I wouldn't have used white emulsion paint on the window sill, skirting boards and door frame (if that is what you used?) its not durable enough or designed for high wear areas, it's really only meant for walls, I'd recommend using eggshell, satin or gloss paint. I'd also ditch the frog tape and just practice cutting in with a brush a steady hand, take your time and you'll achieve straight lines.

I’m going to get better at cutting in in the future that’s for sure but it seems like I’ll need a lot of practice

Will when the builders painted your flat they not only used the cheapest paint they watered it down. When you paint over it with your new paint it has nothing to stick to so your tape had no resistance and peeled off . The trick is to apply size which will mix with the paint and dry to a sealed surface which will then give your colour a firm undercoat and will not lift off when the tape is removed. Merry xmas bud.

Thanks mate that’s great to know, how can you tell what paint was previously used and that it was watered down?

If I can put up coving you can paint. Remember to wash the walls down to remove any finger marks and grease. They will show through the new paint

Also you need to activate frog tape by rolling over it so it adheres properly and get crisp lines and take the tape off whilst the paint is still wet

We wash our walls with sugar water to help ensure the paint does not easily pull off. Would recommend

Cracking job, room looks great. 👍🏻 Never use masking tape when painting, if you need to use anything for a straight edge, large post-it note pads do the trick.

Really, I’ve not heard of that one before

Great video, Will. You mentioned in the comments getting the bed from Dune, did you mean Dusk? Wife is interested! Merry Christmas both.

Should the bed not be on the opposite wall? As the sockets laid out that way.

Yea we did think about this but it left very little room as the other wall is wider and doesn’t have the door opening on it
