When I lived in China a lady at the hardware shop i sometimes used asked if i could explain to her son why the answers he had had marked as incorrect were wrong. Of the five I found that two of his answers were in fact correct. i ended up writing a note to the teacher on the back of the paper explaining why his answers were correct.

It's normal, I remember I took my British Citizenship test practice book to the company, my manager, a native Englishman who grew up in London, actually only answered six questions correctly and did not pass the test, and then he said to me, these questions are far more too difficult and ridiculous, the British themselves may not know! In particular, there is a question, what do the British call Northern Irish, Welsh, Scots, and Englishmen? The answer was actually a slanderous title, and the manager told me that if you called them that, you would be beaten, he could not imagine that the United Kingdom would come up with such a question!

A point to remember is these tests are designed to teach implied meaning and comprehension, so one has to look at the entire text and get a gist of the context rather than just the individual questions.

It's interesting that later in the prompt, the word "pull" did actually appear, so you don't necessarily need to know what chin-ups are to pick the right answer for that one; you just need pretty good reading comprehension. This looks like a difficult test but it's still doable within the framework of the content given; you just need to be a very good test-taker, which doesn't always directly correlate one's mastery of the language

One of the best things I ever learnt was HOW to take a test. How to look for context clues etc, and highlighting the instructions on how to answer. It's really amazing the number of capable students who do badly in an exam because they've raced over reading the question, and miss important instructions. We took a fake exam once where we had 5 minutes to read a page of instructions on the format of the exam. We then signed that page to agree that we had read and understood the instructions. We then began the exam, with some students using the entire class period to finish, and others finishing it immediately. Why? Because one of the instructions was to start with the final question. The final question told you to turn over your exam paper and raise your hand to indicate that you had finished and your paper could be collected by the teacher.

Tbh this makes them good test-takers, but not good English speakers. They are so used to these controlled conditions that they have no idea how to use these very complicated terms and sentences in a practical, real-life situation, I recognise. A lack of practice in using those words, for instance in an essay, makes Chinese students relatively weak in English even now. A more practical training like essay-writing would definitely benefit their language proficiency in English

I’m from Slovenia and my English A-Level exam in high school was very much like this; multiple choice questions where literally every answer could’ve been correct, reading comprehension about super weird and niche topics… There was also a listening comprehension part, and we all know the usual sound quality of school equipment radios… The written part and the listening comprehension were 60 minutes each. After that, there was a 60-minute essay part as well and finally, there was an oral part, where I, for example, had to discuss topics such as “Do you think getting married still makes sense in this day and age?” and Animal Farm by George Orwell with the professor.

The funny thing is, as someone who grew up taking Chinese classes in Saturday school, this testing format totally makes sense in Chinese. But to use the same format in English is hilarious because I don’t think this test actually measures any knowledge of English. Because… the structure of English isn’t the same to the structure of Chinese. Like, really, if you have to guess this much on a test, are you really demonstrating your real knowledge of the material? Who the heck wrote these paragraphs or excerpts? I would fail this style of English test. And I thought the SATs were hard… lol

That's a bit extreme, but a personal story, I emigrated to Canada in 6th grade, went directly into 7th grade here in Canada, with about 2 months left in the school year, the teachers were on strike, so the math class boiled down to teachers giving out handouts for kids to do and ask questions. Speaking no English at all at that point, I just assumed you finish the handouts like a test, and did one in about 10 minutes, thinking "well that was easy, we learnt that stuff in 3rd/4th grade", when I handed that back, I was told (with help from a student that speaks a bit of Mandarin of course) that handout was supposed to be the week's work. But since it was super easy for me. I ended up doing all of the prepared handouts for the remainder of the school year in 4 days, so eventually the teacher ran out of stuff for me to do, and math class became computer class. I played almost 2 months of Pharaoh by Sierra. Helped me out greatly with social studies on Egypt later on, and the best time of my life. I know, that sounds kinda sad, but it honestly was.

I think Evelyn’s English proficiency now is testament to the success of the program despite how silly it may seem to native English speakers. People tend to forget that this is for English as a second language. dude, as someone who has been though the whole of the Chinese educational system until university, i can guarantee you that Evelyn either really spent a lot of time polishing her English speaking or simply had overseas experiences. The English education itself is questionable at most, completely misleading and a waste of time if you ask me (we teach mathematics and science subjects like chem and physics pretty well though). Growing up, I have countless friends who can do well on those English "tests" but can't use English effectively at all, and I also have a huge number of friends who had American/Canadian background and who use English at an advanced level (Emily in the video is an example as well) who can't do as well in those tests.

@@lizyliz970 I know what you mean. I think I did not communicate my point clearly enough though. What I'm saying is not that "Chinese people must learn to speak queen's English", but that our English education is not as effective as it could have been. In general, Chinese students start learning English at as early as 1st grade, and latest 7th grade. That means at the time of graduating from high school, they would have learnt English for 6-12 years. This is comparable with countries like Finland or Israel, where the native languages also belong to a different language family and they start learning English at a similar age. But in my experiences, Finnish or Israeli college students have a much higher English proficiency than their Chinese counterparts, both in terms of speaking/listening and using English as a working language. The reason is simple--they learn from the context and the cultural background while we learn via mechanically remembering the grammar rules and words (hell ya, my high school is one of the best in Beijing and even that, all our English classes are conducted in Chinese. You heard it right...Chinese teachers explaining English in Chinese to their students...)

Once in Thailand, a girl wanting to practice her English showed me her textbook, there were English words in the book, but the sentences made absolutely no sense to me. So seeing the title, I expected a completely non-sensical test, was I wrong. I think Evelyn has a really Chinese approach 'what they want to be the correct answer', I once had to follow that approach when they introduced integration tests for migrants and we made an online version of the test (over half of the natives failed the test. Many of the answers made no sense, or were at least far detached from reality, but there was almost always a 'politically correct' answer. The not entirely sure what the answer is gives me flashbacks to my English exams. Here in Germany, teachers really love to make right/wrong/not in the text questions and "wrong" and "not in the text" were sometimes not well defined. Example: Amanda likes blue t-shirts. Question: Amanda likes red t-shirts. Is this wrong because she likes blue t-shirts or is this not in the text because they only talked about blue t-shirts and not about red ones?

I got 149 out of 150 in my college entrance examination for English, in 2010, in Guangdong, it was the top score in my city, maybe provincial also. And ten years later, I took the exact same test. all I could had was 120ish, it actually went backward.

The hand thing is probably related to the fact that males and females have different finger lengths (sometimes) for pointer and ring fingers. Males are more often engineers, so the correct answer was probably A

25/29 = 86/100 = 129/150. Not bad. If you were local, you were less likely to be able to study in one of China's top universities such as Tsinghua University or Peking University, but you still have a chance to attend one of the 985 universities. 😉

I am fully aware how tough the Chinese exams can be. It is no secret lots of teachers are unable to score high in Chinese college entry exams. Think about it how difficult those exams are for students. In China, scoring high is pretty much the only thing Chinese parents care, including my own parents. Believe me, there are lots of hard works needed to get good score. I am not surprised Chinese high school English test is not easy for English native speakers. Fierce competition drives the test to incredible high level. But I had to admit that Chinese students are good at exam. But we are not that good at the actual English. My GRE score is pretty high but I still have trouble to speak proper English When I came to foreign country.

all exams in China are difficult, cause there are so many students and most of whom have strong learning ability. The number of students increases every year, and the number of schools is still the same as past. Many people think that good academic performance is the only way out and the result is that the exam will become more and more difficult.

I don't know about English tests in Western countries, but I suspect most - if not all - Asian countries apply rigid teaching and test methods like this. When I look at my ex's children's English tests, I sometimes found myself baffled by the answer choices. Like Evelyn said, it's not about what you think should be the answer but what you think the teacher wants the answer to be. This is largely because many of the passages used in the papers are lifted directly from some public source and not written specifically for the students comprehension or maturity level.
