I think that's exactly the problem though, you didn't think of it as an AC game and that's what made it fun. It's very appealing but in a way that's not paying homage to what came before it very well. As an old AC fan, I'll admit the game itself is fine for what it is, but it's carrying the AC franchise name with it and for that, it and Valhalla will forever be bad games to me because they're not genuine to their advertising and what they're fundamentally supposed to be. If it was just a spartan history game that loosely was tied to AC and the title was just Odyssey I think I could forgive it. Ubisoft didn't have the balls to drop the AC title and expect the game to carry its own weight. It's a high budget game and they need more money money money.
@dodesskiy1 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLeftCulprit You answered yourself there. The actual devs wanted no AC in it. The big wigs demanded the name recognition. Compare Final Fantasy 1 to Final Fantasy 15 for me. Let alone the fact that the first one was to be the last game by the dev team. But 14 more completely different are all final. It's this particular franchise that has these few thousands of rabid fans not wanting any change for decades VS the millions that love what was made, and never comment on KZbin.

I just started trying to get into Odyssey again, and I must admit, I'm having a hard time. But to be fair, I just finished playing God of War, and I've never seen a game put so much detail and effort into, quite frankly, everything in a game. The music, story, world, side quests, combat, everything was just so well done in GoW. So coming to AC Odyssey I felt quite let down, the story isn't as interesting, the combat feels jarring, the graphics are too demanding, the world feels vast and quite empty. But I've only just started, I'm hoping it'll improve as I play some more.

I 100%'ed this game and I absolutely despised it. The gigantic copy pasted map, the same endless side activities for over 100 hours of grinding like it's an MMO. I found the story very unsatisfying as well. So you just make up with your family and live happily ever after in Sparta - wow amazing ending 10/10 (I'm not counting the DLC). Same with the Brotherhood - you spend hours assassinating its members and collecting clues, only then to just have the option to join their leader because why not? If you like the game - that's fine, to each their own. I'm just explaining why this is easily my least favorite game in the series. I came back after several years to Syndicate to see if it's as bad as people remember, and I honestly thought that game was miles and bounds above Odyssey.

I played odyssey over the span of a few months in the spring of 2021. I loved the classical atmosphere, music, and the variety of biomes from hilly Phocis to the beautiful Mykonos island. The story was ok but I did really enjoy some of the quests. I felt like there was always something to do and that kept me interested to complete the base game. Then I got burned out and did none of the DLC content. I really enjoyed my time and found it a great game to relax to after work. The combat was easy enough that I didn't feel frustrated but had enough challenge to make me feel good after most fights. The mercenary mechanic was annoying at times but not game breaking. In general, I felt that many reviewers were too harsh on the game. There is no other game series that puts in so much effort and energy to recreate a historical time period and I feel fortunate that I live in a time where I can explore Ptolemaic Egypt, Classical Greece, Revolutionary Paris, Golden age of piracy in the Caribbean, etc... with this series.

Fans are mad cause they never got a fair closure to the story they were following since AC1. AC:Odyssey feels good now cause the newer games are even worse, but standing beside the likes of Rdr2 and God of war at the time it is bloated and drawn out lacking coherence of hours played vs progress in narrative content. It's massively lacking when the reviewer spends more than 6 hours to play it again.

I talked to socrates, I helped the father of medicine, I found father and mother, I spoke to gods, I took down a cult, I fought mythical creatures, I swam with whales, I helped civilians with their problems, I went on tours, I put on a show at an amphitheater, I saved captives, I took down an imposter, I sailed the seas, I made an assassin build, I found Poseidon’s trident, I went to Atlantis, Elysium, and The Underworld. I remember being in high school and always picturing an open world spartan game where you can run around Ancient Greece and explore and customize your character and level them up. Especially from movies like 300 and Troy being my favorite movies, odyssey really made this dream game of mine come to fruition. And I thank Ubisoft for that. If only Valhalla could’ve done the same thing :(

This game for me is the definition of a guilty pleasure: I know there is lots of things wrong with it but I still love this game. The setting, the atmosphere, the graphics and vibrant colors: I love everything about it. Also the fact that you're this overpowered ancient Spartan wo becomes a god like fighter the more you progress. The traveling with the ship, my god are the graphics beautiful and the wave physics are some of the best I've seen. I swear this game is like a holiday. I have over 100 hours in Elden Ring and after the dark and depressing world there, a game like Odyssey is like taking a vacation.

At first I did not like Odyssey. I tried it 3 different times and uninstalled it twice before deciding to finish it. The problem was, I was overwhelmed. I didn’t know if I wanted the Assassin, Hunter, or Warrior build. I didn’t know what gear I wanted and didn’t know what weapons I wanted. I also didn’t know how often to upgrade and engrave (and what to engrave). I then decided that I wanted a mainly Hunter/Warrior hybrid build, the Artemis Armor, Artemis bow, Kronus Daggar, Deimos’ Sword and Mallet of Everlasting Flame. I upgraded every 6-8 levels starting at lvl 15. Everyone said upgrading isn’t viable until level 40-50 but it wasn’t too hard to for me as long as I put effort into gathering resources. The point is, once I knew exactly how I wanted my character and build, it wasn’t overwhelming and it is one of the BEST games I’ve ever played in my life. I am now playing Valhalla and will play Origins after that as I have all 3. I just got Origins last.

I could literally play ac odyssey over and over again and I still be stunned at how amazing and beautiful this game is. It's the one game that I actually feel like the developers cared about and they actually did. Even when this game stopped making money they still pumped out the custom mission mode and the history learning mode. The accuracy of the map is so impressive that I could go on google maps and actually navigate as if I was a local (minus the modern infrastructure). I actually upsets me that people don't give this game a chance because it's not like any other ac game and those judgements can't logically be carried over to this game. Can’t agree that Odyssey has more branching outcomes than TW3. There’s the plague quest that affects the world, the baby one, and the Monger, while the rest only affect the family story, which doesn’t change anything in regards to its ending, simply who is alive or dead. The Witcher 3 had far more, from all the completely different main endings, to the quests like the Baron, the Crones, Keira, the Skellige one’s, Radovid, Roche, Emhyr, Triss’s quest, all the quests that you do that affect who helps you at Kaer Morhen. There’s more quests, and you also have the different endings you get for the expansions, unlike Odyssey who’s DLC endings are all the same. So which quests have big impacts on the world aside from the few I mentioned? I might of missed them, or forgot as I haven’t played Odyssey in a while, but I can’t recall, and I definitely don’t think it has more unique and/or big impact quests than TW3.
@daneparchmentjr2 жыл бұрын
I mean you can say that subjectively you feel as though the branching paths were more impactful to you in Witcher 3 vs Odyssey. But objectively speaking, Odyssey has more quests, more branching options in those quests, and 9 endings vs the 3 in witcher. That's objective.
@cgijokerman57872 жыл бұрын
@@daneparchmentjr quality over quantity. Those choices are SHALLOW and hollow in terms of story and actual impact if you do some critical thinking. TW3 has the fact that the choices actually FEEL like choice and ARE choices. Not just some little tiny change. btw there are more "endings" in TW3, because the core 3 are there, but you can still have variations on those 3 depending on your other choices. :)
@whitewolf74542 жыл бұрын
@@daneparchmentjr No it isn’t, it’s more filler quests, there’s a few good one’s, but not as much as there is in TW3. And yeah, 9 endings, but every single one of them is the same, every ending is you sat in your Sparta home eating dinner, with the only difference being who in your family is alive to be there too. For TW3 one ending has you adventuring with Ciri, another has her become Empress, and the last has Ciri likely dead. And seeing as all those 9 Odyssey endings are 99% the same and are just slight variations of the same linear ending, I might as well add all the different character endings TW has. From Emhyr’s ending, Radovid’s, Triss’s, Geralt’s, Yennefer’s, Dijkstra, Cerys/Hjalmar’s, Even the Baron and Keira. So not only does it have better main endings that are all completely different, it also has more endings altogether with all the plentiful and better characters it has. This level of quality applies to The Witcher’s DLC too. From all the quests, and possible endings you get in HoS and B&W compared to Odyssey’s linear Legacy of the First Blade and Fate of Atlantis one’s that end one way, and one way only.

I am one of the rare people who likes all of the AC games (except Unity & Rouge - skipped). I loved the original for where it was, what it offered, and the bizarre story it told. Ezio was incredible and brotherhood was the apex of the trilogy. Black Flag is the ultimate pirate game. Unity’s Paris, Origin’s Egypt, Odyssey’s Greece, and Valhalla’s England were all incredible feats unto themselves. The recreation of these places is awe inspiring, and, I believe is the hallmark of an Assassin’a Creed game. Say what you want, but even a bad AC game has an excellent recreation of time since last. The year I played Valhalla I really sucked myself in Viking history, language, lore, and Norse mythology. I thought about it all the time. It influenced my music, things I would say, and motivated me to do a ton of research. I loved my time in this world. As for Odyssey, watching you play and talk about this game put a big small on my face. What a masterpiece of a game this is! This is the definitive Ancient Greece game! Absolutely incredible - gorgeous, fun, great story, exciting graphics, and great soundtrack. I have never understood why people trash this game.

The storyline involving the Phiobe was also a complete hit when it came to making me care about an NPC. Her storyline provided my Cassandra with the motivation to continue on her quests. Honestly, the Phiobe character is one of the best NPC's in the series: sort a perfect blend of emotions that the character invokes. I also liked the various items which gave you quite a few playstyle options and the monsters/mythical creatures seemed much less out of place in an ancient Greek world that we commonly associate with myths and legends. The ship combat was also good, though like Black Flag it was a bit too easy.

Even in the AC game series, I still think a novel change is necessary, so not 100 AC games are the same. If anyone likes hack-and-slash RPG games, AC Odyssey is the perfect choice. Ancient Greece is described as beautiful, extremely spacious, with seas, mountains, caves, animals and many beautiful buildings. Combat mechanism is extremely impressive. The small details in the game are also very well polished, the dogs peeing, the pets are sad when the owner dies, the soldiers carrying the corpses of their teammates inside are also very real... and much more. Try to play for 3 hours if you are an anti fan of the game, and if you love the game from the beginning like me, please spend 100h-300h on this game, I have played to level 79 and still continue. Thank you.

This was my first AC game and my husband had me try it out because I mentioned starting Skyrim for the upteenth time a few years ago. Female protagonist, big ol map, tons of memorable side quests, gorgeous views. I loved exploring with Kassandra and I still revisit the game to palate cleanse between new ones. It has its problems but it’s still one of my favorites.

I have generally mixed feelings about this game. There are a few problems I have with it that hold it back from being one of my favorites: Firstly I don't like the combat. I don't hate it but the massive health bars make fights far too long and tedious for my liking. I'd much rather the difficulty slider made enemies more smarter and aggressive (being able to dodge and counter your attacks more as well as attacking you more often during fights). Secondly, I wish the conquest battles had more variety and consequences in the open world rather than a simple change of colours/ai in the particular region. They begin to feel very samey after the first couple. Thirdly, while the world itself is beautiful to look at, there are hardly any interactions, especially in the cities. Simple features present in older ac games like being able to sit at benches and lure certain npcs to help you against guards are missing, and could have made things like infiltrating leader houses way more fun, or distracting mercenaries on your tail. I would love to be able to have brief simple interactions with NPCs in the world even if it's just a short conversation that might give you some more insight into the particular region you're visiting, or giving you hints on cool discoveries you can make nearby. Walking through cities just to follow lifeless npcs having the same walking patterns feels underwhelming to say the least.

Saying that Odyssey is underated but Valhalla is "awful" doesn't make sense. Both have the pacing problem and doesn't have a peak climax in story. For me, Valhalla and Odyssey are good games with big problems but both are in the same level and Valhalla even a little bit better.
@niknigal33792 жыл бұрын
How can it not make sense? They both have similar flaws, as you pointed out, but valhalla's pacing is much WORSE and the story is so unfocused and bloated that it's devoid of any natural progression or narrative tension. Also, the combat in valhalla is a big downgrade from odyssey, the characters in valhalla are forgettable to those of odyssey, and the world itself is bland, empty and boring compared to odyssey. I loved odyssey, absolutely hated valhalla
@user-jt6rh8xy6n2 жыл бұрын
@@niknigal3379 I agree with everything you just said. I loved odyssey, but Valhalla was decent until you get far enough where the story slowly starts to get really really lazy up after you realize that they missed out on a lot of unique plot points by making the game the way it was (go here Allies X then go there and recruit allies). Overall Valhalla was a bland game. The person that commented is acting as if they are the exact same game which to a point they are but it’s really easy to tell which one involved actual effort. Valhalla really had the potential to be a good and unique game especially considering that there are not many Viking games but they tried to make it so “open world” that it doesn’t have any sense of identity. They took a lot of aspects from odyssey and made it much worse in my opinion.
@user-jt6rh8xy6n2 жыл бұрын
One thing I will say about both games is that -They focus more around leveling progression rather than character development than they should which is largely a fault of them throwing us in the body of a fully grown adult with little to no backstory and exposition. -The world although beautiful is far to big and the scattered out buildings are copy and pasted to the point where it feels like “exploration” is a chore. -The move set is far to limited especially when most of the game is actual combat so when you get half way through the game you don’t have any drive to engage in conflict, Valhalla managed this better by scattering abilities in different locations but overall Odyssey has a better flow of combat. The quality of both games would be far better if the world was scaled down by at least half and they took the time to actually design locations other than the big cities that way exploration and progression could have a chance to flow more naturally. This next part is purely opinionated but I think they should remove player choice to some capacity and provide a more thorough backstory and a more well established character, the lack of backstory made the main protagonist seem more like side characters than actual main protagonist to me. They should have made 2 or 3 installments for a single character rather than starting off with a new character from scratch. I’m not necessarily saying Alexios/kessandra or Evior are bad characters but they badly suffer from a lack of depth which could’ve easily been given if there was more than one game in which they were the main protagonist. They tried to do so much to the point they didn’t really focus on what could potentially make the game great, it was far too ambitious that I don’t even think Rockstar would attempt it within such a short time frame. I don’t think either of the games were done lazily but I do think Ubisoft put too much pressure on the people in charge of the project.

I have always had the same stance on this game. It has a lot of qualityes - The world is GORGEOUS, yes it may be HUGE and at times PLAIN and BORING, but it's GORGEOUS, full of details that acutally make people want to learn more about that era - The gameplay as a standalone is very fun, except on higher dificulties where the game just becomes a "smash the life sponge for 20 seconds with same attack" - The main story and side quests can be very interesting ... HOWEVER, my problem with this, is that it makes no sense in the AC space..., i mean, what is the point of, for a "reboot", going back to the ORIGIN'S of Assassin's, if in the next game we will be going even furher back? And the connection makes absolutely no fucking sense.... This game as a standalone would be awsome, call it wtv the fuck they want, use another IP i dont care, call it Odyssey only or something, delete all the supposed AC references (Of which there are not many) and release it like that, but as an AC game, it's even worst then Valhala. Instead of this crap of an AC, we should've gotten a Origin's sequel, where we would play as Aya in Rome, that would be a fucking best seller, not only would Ubisoft shut every fucking one about the "not creating a real female lead" story, but they would give an amazing progression to the story that Bayek started, and with that Rome game, with Aya, the interactions in Valhala where we eventually learn that the notes on the old AC "bunkers" are about her would be even more amazing, because we actually spent 100s of hours with her, and not only 10...

One of my biggest issues with this game is just how miserable the grind is in this game. If you have to pay an extra fee to make the game’s progression feel “normal,” to me that speaks to the game itself simply not being acceptable

Ignoring some of the historical points, I hate how almost everyone's argument for who they play as is "well they are the canonical one so". If that is what you want and are concerned with, sure. Also I think Kassandra gets why to much love for her performance and Alexios gets to much hate. They bought went different routes with them. Kass is a more down to earth performance while Alexios took a more dramatic, theater like approach. And frankly, imo, the rest of the game is told and preformed by the rest of the cast more in that dramatic, theater style that makes Alexios blend and fit in. Both did great and both took different approaches. I think it is worth playing both as they change the tone and feel of the game some.

I just remember having to pause playing the game because I just couldn’t keep going even though I only play 1 story based game at a time. There was just something about Odyssey that made it feel boring after, let’s say 60 hours. I returned to it at least 6 months after and the same thing happened where after approximately 60 hours it was soooo hard to keep going. This time though I forced myself to complete it since I couldn’t see myself return to it a third time (which might have been a bad decision but I just wanted to be done with it). In the end I spent 135 hours to play through the main game, I believe most side quests and DLC. I vowed from that point to never put myself through it all again.
