Blender can almost be fully used with just a mouse for general tasks. So mapping the right touchpad to mouse, left to scrollwheel (and pressing it for middle-click), triggers to left and right clicks. Is pretty much the minimal setup you need for almost all possible basic uses. They have added tons of clickable and dragable controls over the years. But of course, additional shortcuts do help speed up things a lot.

Honestly, the Steam Deck itself is really good as a normal PC. I've been using it as my daily driver since i got it and while the start was pretty rough, ever since i got the dock it's pretty much working as well as any other desktop PC.

I get the feeling that maybe the better way to do this is with action sets. I feel like with a couple of plugins to adjust how the controls work, it could unironically be a viable platform. Think... Being able to move the camera with the gyros, and automatically scaling / extruding via the joysticks for an easy relative change, or moving them via the trackpads for a precise change (no specific hotkeys needed). Just a few little things like that, which change contextually based on the situation (layout, animating, shaders, rendering, etc), could make it a super intuitive experience, IMO. One effect that I think could be legitimately a killer feature on Deck is a "shaky cam" by hand effect, which is something that a lot of people do via smartphone even in professional workflows, just because it seems to produce more natural effects than animating the shakes by hand.

I'm way too lazy to make a video of this quality on my off time but I have been using my Steamdeck as a laptop replacement for over a year now and that includes doing some blender work. I have a completely different approach, I feel at home in steamdeck desktop mode because I use the same Linux interface on my PC, I mapped desktop mode to do all of the input and modifier keys so I can do any shortcut more or less and even type, typing is not very fast but something like ctrl shift T in firefox or shift A to add objects and few letters to search is as fast as on a real keyboard and mouse.
@3Digitalist2 ай бұрын
Oh thats cool! Did you manage to bind every letter?
@EdLrandom2 ай бұрын
@@3Digitalist I did, so triggers are layer shifters to 2 different layers right shoulder is win key left shoulder is alt key, left back buttons are shift and ctl, right back buttons are left and right mouse clicks. The trick is to set trackpads into dpad mode which gives you 4 keys per trackpad, I have it so default layers have the right trackpad as a mouse but basically when I hold the right trigger it's a d-pad with 4 letters on it "MNKB". So basically the entire front side of the steam deck is 4 keys on the d pad + 4 keys on sticks each, xyab buttons as keys + menu and start 2 more, and 4 per trackpad, 26 keys in total, other stuff like backspace return numbers, etc are on one of the layers. Again, typing something long is not hard but it's just slow, yet holding a complicated keyboard shortcut is very ergonomic and it makes steamdeck my preferred tool for on-the-go web browsing and music making as well. Limitations though include the fact that I can't change the steam and activities button does, and after you suspend your deck in the desktop mode it might get stuck on one of the layers... must be a bug but the way to get around is just click the useless activities button after you unlock it. Oh and you gotta run steam in the background in desktop mode... a bit annoying case recently it tends to open in big picture mode even if I change the settings not to do that.
@3Digitalist2 ай бұрын
