In this video I trained like Chris Bumstead for 7 Days to see if I could make progress cutting fat while maintaining muscle. Recently, I have been trying to bulk up, and got to the point where i wanted to shred some body fat. So I decided to try Chris Bumstead's insane shredding diet and training routine to see how I did. Chris Bumstead is 3x Mr. Olympia, and has an absolutely incredible physique and work ethic. Here's how I did with his training.
Have a great week guys! Cheers.

Some food for thought - it's not so much that it's too short of a time frame, since it's not unreasonable to lose up to 2 pounds of "mostly" fat (aside from water weight). It's more the fact that those are very advanced techniques that require preparation and a lot of dedication (for example, good old protein sparing modified fasting). It's too short of a time frame for anything sustainable though, I'll agree on that.

Hey Cam, I'd like to point out some aspects, that might help in the future. 1. You mentioned 1600 calories, but this seems too low for C-Bum even in peak week, so I'm assuming you've scaled this to your own weight. If not - keep in mind 2 things - Chris's maintenance is around 3500 kcal, while yours is likely around 2500, given the difference in weight and muscle mass. Second, as you said, Chris DOES NOT sustain such a diet for weeks, this is likely peak week level of restriction. 2. The training modalities of beginner, intermediate and advanced people vary greatly. A "bro-split", i.e. every part has it's own day, or something similar is WAY LESS EFFECTIVE for beginners or intermediate lifters in comparison to other popular splits like PPL or UL (or even 3x Full Body). This much of a focus and resting times between sessions for the same muscle group is required for people with huge amounts of muscle, since they need so much volume and thus, recovery to grow that anything less might be insufficient. All in all, although a fun willpower experiment, there is nothing to gain from such competition level types of restriction and training splits, you're far better off cutting for 6-14 weeks at a time, with a stable(-ish, you might need to auto-regulate) ~500 calories deficit and a good beginner or intermediate split. Cheers!

Isn’t it more reasonable to assume that most of the weight loss was water though? Isn’t that typical at the beginning of a calorie deficit? Especially if your cutting diet had less sodium and you also upped your activity levels. I feel like this kind of challenge could be more effective if done for a longer time. To me, at least a month is necessary to notice a reasonable amount of change from a shift in diet or exercise. At one week, there’s all sorts of factors that could make a person lose more or less weight than expected

That might be a little harsh - I think he might just be in the novice stages of learning about nutrition and what it means in the context of fitness goals - specifically, things like bulking, cutting, peaking, etc. I think based on their other content they at least have a solid base of what kinds of foods are generally considered healthy and portion control and whatnot. But adding in the body (metrics like weight, energy, bf%, etc) and its changes and looking to optimize to hit a specific goal is where it gets more complicated. I do think doing a slightly more reasonable goal like just cutting for a month would have been more beneficial and educational, though being able to add Chris Bumstead’s name might bring more views

People tend to not understand how much their "weight" can fluctuate day to day (heck, even throughout the day) based on things like hydration, if they've eaten recently, or if they might happen to have a giant 5 day old sh!t backed up in their guts. Cam probably lost 2, maaaaaybe 3, actual pounds of fat during the week from cutting his calories so aggressively. As soon as he goes back to normal eating, he'll "regain" most of those 7lbs. This kind of crash dieting is why people get demotivated and think they "just can't lose weight"

Thank you for the video and a "torture" that you endured :D I don't know why many people in the comments are talking about results and that it takes months. The video is clearly states that it is to see what happens in a week with this routine for a beginner user and it shows exactly that. It wasn't made to see if Chris's shape could be achieved, it was to try how hard it would be and there are results: constipation, carbs withdraw, weight loss (with muscles and not only fat). I think video delivered exactly what it promised. Thank you again! No-one, except professionals, should try to do it for a month or more.

The lowered carbs means you will not retain as much water. This will lower your weight in the first few days. You’re not losing much fat and no muscle within 7 days. This should have been at least 30 days.

Most of that weight loss is water weight in the first one-two weeks. One week is not enough to see a difference even with this drastic diet. If you did this for a month you’d definitely see a decent change in body composition. You’d probably lose around 5 lbs body fat in a month but 10 total including water weight and minimal muscle due to the high amounts of protein you were eating

@phil245
@phil245 Жыл бұрын
The weight loss isn't a problem, you lost about 2lbs of bodyfat, the rest is likely water. Bodybuilders increase their protein intake on a cut, as dietary protein needs get higher when you drop off the calories in order to preserve muscle - Layne Norton has a video on this. You were eating to preserve Chris Bumsteads muscle, which (roids or not) takes more protein to sustain than most people. Also, you're eating less salty foods, really clean options all the time, which contributes to the water loss. The recommended amount of weight loss is more for long term stuff, it's pretty standard to lose a bunch quickly when you have a drastic diet change. Longer term moderate deficits are good though.

Hello Cam Just want to mention a few things... Your scales bf% is wrong. You're looking closer to 23-25% after the 7 days. And just more bloated prior. Your first weight loss jump was most likely water weight. You can lose a substantial amount of water weight in your first week/2 weeks of starting a cut (up to 5-6kg is very possible when dropping to a much lower sodium/preservatives diet). You would be better off training however you were before during your "Bulk" and then simply lowering your calories gradually until you notice a reduction in weight. Changing the way you train would ultimately just slow down your strength progress that you made previously... If you wanted to add in extra cardio sessions for some extra calorie burning and improved cardio health (faster recovery) then that would be a good addition to the dietary change. Make sure your protein is at 1.7-2g of protein per kg of bodyweight. You will not lose muscle at your current bodyfat percentage unless you stop your strength training and reduce your protein below the required amount. Because your body has plenty of fatty tissue to use as calories when building muscle... you can actually put on muscle and lose fat at the same time. This "phenom" makes perfect sense for all beginner/intermediate lifters and any advanced lifter that has "bulked" to a too high bodyfat % (males: 20+) In future, I would suggest you gradually lower your body fat down to around 10-15% (Where you feel healthy mentally and can sustain this type of eating) and then simply enjoy the slow gain process since any additional fat above this point will not serve to improve muscle building potential. In saying all of this. Pretty cool experiment. Hope you enjoyed attempting roughly what the CBum himself would do. Myself and I'm sure many others found this quite enjoyable regardless of whether or not it was optimal. Keen to see you again in a few months lookin' lean and mean! :D

This video is full of misinformation regarding how fat loss works. For one as everyone else has already pointed out, the amount of weight your losing is mostly water weight. The water weight loss mostly resulting from less carbs - less glycogen, and glycogen stores 3 times it's weight in water, this is why if you significantly cut your intake it seems like you drop a bunch of weight magically, because it's all mostly water weight. The other huge issue there is the time frame. 7 days is nowhere near enough time to have any significant fat loss, even if you were eating 0 calories and burning as many as you normally would, which obviously is very difficult since you're depriving yourself of all your energy and relying purely on slow acting fat stores for energy. Going purely based off the roughly 1k calorie deficit you were in, you at most lost 2 pounts of fat this week. This needed to be extended too around 2-3 weeks for significant fatloss to occur. Another way to make this better would be to scale it appropriately for you. 1600 calories is a 3500+ calorie deficit for Cbum but is less than half of that for you, combine that with him doing that for around month to prep for shows and ofc he's going to be absolutely peeled on stage. Cam, you can do better

You didn’t lose all that muscle in a day especially if you were resistance training. Your body on average can hold about 600g of glycogen which is about 1.3 pounds. Your body also holds about 3-4 grams of water for every gram of glycogen your body holds. So if you are 1600 calories for a whole week most of that weight loss was in order, water, glycogen, fat, then muscle. Not to mention water loss from the drop in sodium intake.

The fatal flaw of comparing yourself with someone else. You don’t know how long they have trained for? . What free time or what time they use to be able to get what both they have? You don’t know what THEY actually take with supplements also. A lot of its eating and sleeping. Training is the last in the pyramid. Getting enough food to fuel a workout and then sleeping. The training mindset is habit. Wanting it a lot. I.e Moving your work start time or getting up earlier to workout pre workout etc. fitting in workouts if you are away from the weekend or on holiday.

Your rapid weight loss is mainly cause you’re eating zero carbs. It’s not necessarily fat and muscle loss, usually the first week or two of any cutting phase you’ll see a large drop in body weight usually because you’re glycogen depleted and losing water weight that’s associated with it. If it was a month or two in and you had the same rapid weight loss then it’d be time to be concerned.

Pretty disappointed with this video. What makes Goal Guys such a great channel is your level of commitment to making meaningful, but sustainable, changes in your life and bringing us on that journey. 30 days, or preferably 60 days, shows us that. 7 days of a crash diet and routine from a pro-bodybuilder doesn't teach us anything apart from "it's a bad idea". Yes it takes longer to film, which I suppose is why these shorter "challenge" videos have become so popular on KZbin, but it's the content that makes you guys worth watching. Train like a pro body-builder for 90 days, with interviews with a personal trainer, tapering your calorie consumption over time, and showing the challenges you encounter maintaining that consistency around your work/social life? Would absolutely watch this, ten out of ten. 7 days though? C'mon guys, what's the point?
