One thing I noticed in your tuning mid-video on the flippy ones, and the way you tuned the epic. What seems to have the most effect is a very rapid bend to a very severe angle. You got it right when you said you have to bend way more aggressively than you think you need to. What I never liked about it was that it was a really imprecise process, and it was hard to target a specific amount of change. I've essentially broken discs with it before (that Flick I mentioned in the comment you quoted is basically uselessly overstable, even at 150g - even moreso than the max weight ones). When you get it just right though, it can save years of time beating in a disc 😁

I've seen Calvin tuning his Draco on the tee box before. It's not as obvious because he's just flexing the disc upwards before he throws but he's doing it. What's the difference between this and Nate Sexton carrying around a sanding block for when his discs get scuffed? You could say he's purposely modified the disc if he sands on it. What's the difference between this and purposely throwing a disc at trees to try and get the same effect? How would you know if my destroyer flew perfect you might say " oh you've hit a few trees with that one it's beat in nice" . So I'd say this rule has never been and will never be enforced unless someone is literally standing on a tee box bending a disc and you see the flight change.

There's no way Calvin is trying to intentionally change the stability of he's eagles on the tee. Just some habit he has developed.

If you watch the recent GK pro tourney down under they talk on the cast about one of the players tuning his disc, you can see him flexing it as he stops up to throw. I see this kind of flexing of the disc all the time, but I don’t think most players are trying to change the flight it’s just a nervous tic lol

you can sand a disc so long as it isn't in dramatic fashion in a shorter sense. If you want to smooth out some knicks sure. You can even sand new discs that have a lot of flashing so long as you're not sanding into the bead. Everyone should actually sand a disc with a lot of flashing so you aren't ripping skin off your fingers.

As I read the PDGA rules disc tuning is NOT illegal. You are not really changing the original flight characteristics anymore than the manufacturer making the disc with a different type of plastic (we have all experienced how much more stable Innova champion plastic is than DX plastic is right out of the box) or anymore than how discs become more understable after a few tree hits. The PDGA rules are covering more of the unusual ways you might modify a disc (drilling holes in the middle, adding weight to the outer rim, adding dimples like a golf ball, ...) or crunching it up into a ball shape and throwing it that way. The end result of your tuning still yields a disc that is circular and saucer-like with no etching, carving or sanding. If they want to eliminate disc tuning then they have to re-write the rules to cover that.

I honestly don't think tuning discs this way is illegal. a bent disc is still circular and saucer-like and, most importantly, flies like a disc. the rule was, as i understood it, implemented to prevent people from folding up their floppy putters and throwing them in a ball like Matt Bell did.
@mikemikemikemikemikemeup11 ай бұрын
I think the rule that people are confused on is the no modification rule. you’re not supposed to modify your disk in a way that changes it. I take that rule as you’re not allowed to shave off or aggressively sand parts to make it fly differently. But in my opinion, there’s no difference between someone beating in their discs by hitting trees versus someone, bending the disc to get the same result. First of all, there’s no way to regulate that rule because unless you see the person doing it, you can’t really prove it. Because beating in a disc is aloud and gets you the same result. You would never know if the person did it on purpose or if that’s just what the disc naturally did as it hit trees. I think I agree that the rule is there for extreme cases. I have a couple elevation discs that are made of rubber. You can bend in half and throw it like a ball just like you said. It makes more sense to me that the rule is for stuff like that, and not a little bit of bending of the disc. I had one person accuse me of tampering with one of my discs. I have an axiom paradox. When I first bought it, it flew with a very nice S shape. It had a good amount of turn with a nice fade at the end. But after a while of hitting so many trees with it, it now flies perfectly straight. My paradox flies. Similarly to my glitch now. If I were to give it numbers, it would probably be 5/4/0/0. They tried to say that I did something to the disk to make it fly that way. Well technically I did. I just played with the disc and overtime. It developed that flight pattern. It really annoyed me that they tried to call me out on that because there was no way of them ever proving that I did something wrong and there was no way for me to prove that I didn’t do something wrong. My assumption is that they hadn’t been playing for very long, and didn’t own any disc that had been beaten into that point.

as you highlighted, I think the major problem here is consistency. I think most serious players have always known this works (which is also why the PDGA banned it) but I'd rather have two discs that always act the same way than 1 disc that I "tune" with an enormous margin of error. Like, you'd have to be extremely good at this to be able to add a -1 turn instead of -0.5 or -1.5 or even -3 for that matter. I'd also wonder how this affects other attirbutes like lift, CoL (would affect fade), glide, etc (it certainly would - but by how much?) After watching this I'm definitely going to be tuning my star destroyers and wraiths.

If you are trying to break in a disc, you could bend it and hit trees with it, or you could put it through hot and cold cycles until the plastic fully settles.

If I tuned my disk before a tournament, how would anyone ever know? I’ve heard that tampering with your desk is technically not allowed. But what is the difference between purposely tampering with a disk and a disk getting beat in? I have a paradox that when I first started using it was pretty stable and had a nice finishing fade. But after throwing it so many times and hitting trees and rocks. It now flies perfectly stable and flat with zero turn or fade. What is the difference between bending the disc to get your desired flight versus a bending itself as you use it? It just seems like a rule that could never really be enforced. The only way you could catch someone is if you watch them, bend it before they played. Personally, I don’t really understand why it matters if a disk is bent and it flies a little differently. is PDGA legal and it’s also legal to have a disc that’s beat in overtime. Why does it matter if you bend it a little bit? Maybe there’s some I don’t understand. Maybe there is a way to notice when someone has a tampered with disk. I’m just not sure of those things so if anyone can explain more about this, that would be great.

I'm GUESSING.... That a beat in disc gets more flippy as the rim (due to the physics of being only supported at the top, by the top plate) gets bent down with every tree, tombstone and hard ground impact... Although illegal.. I would challenge any official/player to prove that a beat in disc that was then (outside the event, private, secret squirrel) bent back into (and possibly past) it's original stability... and likewise, prove that a disc bend down was not just beat in by repetitive air-balls onto astro-turf. In fact, apart from stupidly bending a disc infront of a competitor/official... fairly all would be oblivious as long as the general original shape has not changed beyond a 'reasonable' distance. I for instance have an RPM Kotare that has more dome than a 50's UFO (yet oddly is more beef than a whole farm of steers.)... ok its a 1R but even other 1R's I have compared it to appear to be at least 2-3mm lower. And My Tesla (swamp find Cosmic Neutron I think... Factory Second, fawn/pink and stripy but not too glossy) is dead flat, Even a brand new Plasma was more pop top. Then theres my old flippy R-Pro Pig (3103) that I compared with a newish 4103 R-Pro Pig... and the rim on the Noob is definitely more turned up (and the top slightly lower beyond the thumb groove making overall height about the same) My old PIg And the Tesla have been through a life and ended there, not tuned to that shape... but they are both different from the norm.. how could anyone tell they grew up that way, and not genetically modified.
@JonathanWilliam246 ай бұрын
I can see this being fun to mess around with, but I feel like tuning discs would be way more inconsistent than just switching molds in a competitive type situation, even if it was approved by the PDGA. I think allowing a certain amount of modification should be allowed honestly, especially since most pros are locked into one brand where they may not have all the slots available to them due to whoever their sponsor is.

“Intentionally deforming a disc such that it is not in a circular, saucer-like configuration.” If you were to bend a disc to the point where it will hold the form of an oval or a taco when you throw, that would be illegal. Disc tuning is absolutely legal. Disc deformation is illegal.

Its not like a corked bat or something that helps get distance, and any tune you make could just be its own disc shape, so why on earth would anybody give a rip??

OK first off. Thanks for the knowledge that it is not approved. And politely you are doing it wrong. Start with a sink full of really hot water not boiling just really hot water. Let it soak 10 215 minutes, then put it on your flat counter and pile a dozen discs on top of it for weight to cool flat then you’re ready. It will not lose its shape or go back.
