Thal (Sanskrit word) means Surface. Thali in this context means surface where food can be served (Plate). It denotes plate with food served in as it conveys with years of usage. Word Thali has other meanings as well. As 'sacred wedding amulet' in South India and applause in North India.

"thali" isn't the same as "taali" you're thinking of "taali" when you say applause. taali=ताली (applause) thali=थाली (plate) tal=तल (surface) when explaining, hindi meanings, avoid using the "h" as it can change the meaning of the word. Adding "h" only works in south indian context. Saying "thali" is applause is misleading in hindi/north indian context.
