A tip for your hose fittings, the hozelock ends with the red collars have built in flow stoppers for when nothing is connected to end of the hose water can be left on. You ideally only ever want 1 at end of your hosepipe (so you can swap nozzles without turning water off) but none anywhere else in the system as the flow stoppers will always add a restriction to the flow but its worse especially if they’re run backwards. I would recommend to standardise all fittings to the none stopper type (orange head with grey body) for all your hosepipes on the property since the red fittings are no good to use with a jetwash either due to the aforementioned flow restriction (jetwashes do not like any flow restrictions as if there isn’t enough flow rate you will cause cavitation in the pump and damage it)

I find those push on connectors can be devils to get on sometimes and difficult to feel when they've actually gone in all the way, especially in awkward places. I always use some Pipe Lubricant which helps a lot. I also use it on compression joints, between the olive and the nut which makes it much easier to tighten up. I feel joints should seal properly without any sealing gunk and, unless thare's a problem with the pipe or coupling I never get a leak.
@ianc88144 ай бұрын
Top tip for JG Speedfit going into a compression fitting! Put the nut and olive onto the Speedfit pipe before you put the insert in. Usually the olive won't go over the insert, especially not the superseal ones with the blue or black rings. Interesting video, fair play for showing the bits that didn't go to plan. Its very essy to strip the threads in those plastic wastes, sometimes the threads are plastic or sometimes there's a silly brass insert that spins round if the last person overtightened it 😅

@tonyjover5 ай бұрын
Just to repeat and collate advice already given in these comments - change all the water stop fittings on your hoses (especially if you're ever going to use a jet washer), and always use sealant on any olives - it doesn't only seal leaks itself, it also lubricates the olive allowing the fitting to be more effectively tightened. As an aside, a pair of needle nosed pliers are good for converting water stop fittings ;)

Thanks for sharing this. Since you asked what I would do differently.... I think the hot water is not really needed, I just take my dog inside and wash her in the shower. That would have left you with adding a simple T on the copper pipe. I would have been scared to touch those black pipes unless I could eliminate them completely. But if I had to I would have used a pushfit isolator and avoid compression joints on plastic. As for the earthing I don't think it's needed as plastic doesn't conduct electricity.

Vikki, amazing work. I may have missed it, but to be sure, a cold water pipe is allowed for electric ground because it comes from ground, but it has to also be conductive. My first ever job on site was to fit the main earth to the stop tap (as near as is reasonably practicable..... 1978 and it is still etched in there) and I have done many more of them since! If you are struggling to take one off you can loosen the locking nut. That should be tightened up after you have tightened the clamp up fully! If you have a really grotty one you can use a pair of snips and cut it free and fit a new one. To be honest the one you have is not doing much other than bonding the metal sink to the metal pipe for a couple of inches! It might be an idea to get an insulating hood to cover the taps up in winter to stop freezing.

I'd be concerned for the winter freeze. You need to be able to shut off the water to the outside and drain the taps. If you get a burst your only option is to turn off at the main shutoff valve.
@cbobwhite57685 ай бұрын
In the states, we have "Freeze-proof faucets" that we use on outside walls. You buy the faucet according to the wall thickness you have. The faucet is attached to the outside wall and the other end attaches to the water supply, in a heated crawl space or basement. The faucet doesn't work like a standard valve. when you turn the handle, you're turning a long stem, that cuts off the water at the opposite end of the faucet, on the warm side of the wall. When the valve is closed, all the water drains from the faucet, so there's nothing to freeze. I was curious if you have them in the UK.
@nicolad88225 ай бұрын
Not heard of anything like that, but I’m not a plumber! We don’t have heated crawl spaces or basements. It’s rarely cold enough for long enough in most parts of the country for freezing taps to be a real problem as long as you insulate them a bit. Unless maybe they are away from a warmed house. I could turn off my outdoor tap from just inside the exterior wall but I don’t and have never had a problem.
