I love gouache! I have many Holbein colors and several Winsor and Newton's as well. My favorites are Schmincke. Most artists (myself included) typically mix a little white in with most colors to make them more opaque. And you can layer but you have to be gentle with your brush strokes and only go over something once or twice. It's not like acrylic. Also, I am super diligent about making sure the cap is on snug. I have to really be careful about making sure it sets right in the thread. I have had a few tubes dry up on me unfortunately.

Thanks for the tip to mix a little white in, I've not heard that before but completely makes sense. Great advice, thank you!

I find it hard to go opaque after years of watercolor... but I keep trying. What I've found is that using watercolor for the dark underlayers is helpful. Watercolor doesn't lift when painting over it as much as gouache. That surprised me. Painting light over dark gouache layers always pulls the dark up. Apparently you can rework gouache forever!

Oh I need to try layering gouache over watercolour. Thanks for the tip!

Thank you for doing this. I haven’t ventured into gauche yet. I am thinking it would take a learning curve after watercolors. And yes, you have a very nice reading voice.

Thanks, Diane 😊 It does behave fairly similar to watercolours. I think I’ve been using it too much like watercolours, which is why I’m having difficulties achieving an opaque finish. It is quite tricky to mix it with the right amount of water. But if you don’t need opaque areas I’d just stick to watercolour. Or you could use both together.

🙏I just have been thinking of trying gouach and since I also love to work in layers I am going to try acrylic gouache - 🎶💜🎵🦄

Good shout! I've actually bought some acrylic gouache since and am really enjoying it. Will share my findings in the future of course 😉

This set is just perfect for me, and the quality is great. The gouache advantage is that can be painted like a watercolor for the under painting and straight from the tube building the painting. Alla prima technique same for oil. Good review thank you!

Indeed, working thin over thick works best with these, rather working on top of thick paint. I don't have much to compare them too, but the quality does seem excellent.

Your painting videos are amazing, and very well done. Your voice would also be excellent for reading stories. Like Winnie the Pooh, or Peter Rabbit, or anything, really! Cheers 🍻
