He did a video a long while back about how it’s a pretty common occurrence even with grips - he gave advice for “trimming calluses” in the video as well! It does look super painful, when I saw him get a rip for the first time I full body flinched 😭 - but apparently this is pretty routine unfortunately! I hope this helps explain how casual he was about it

Yeah happens all the time as a gymnast. It’s just part of life now I guess. They do hurt a lot tho unless you tape your hand REALLY well but I have no tapeing abilities so it usually just hurts

rips honestly don't hurt that much, pulling the skin can be a bit painful but not bad at all, the skin underneath does sting for a little bit when you first rip but that's the worst of it

I watched a video about a girl learning to shoot at the range and her and the instructor was talking about she couldn’t because of her nails. Exactly, what I was worried would happen. I’m not an athlete and I did that before. Only with two nails and it was incredibly painful and they took forever to grow back. I never got them again. This needs to be banned. Gymnastics is a dangerous sport and this makes it more dangerous.

There’s a big difference between press on nails and acrylics. Hers can take a lot more damage, but they hurt a lot more if one rips off/brakes. You still look beautiful ❤😂

So as a female level 4 gymnast I found out the importance of grips today! So we had a Christmas party and we’re having an open gym I was to lazy to put my grips on so I was like jumping to high bar and stuff still and when I did my double back hip circle I gave my self a bloody blister 😭 ( also ik they r mainly used for regrouping the bar but I do think they help a lil bit to not rip when u do tap swings

The skin ripping is so real. If you don’t chalk up enough or use the right technique while spinning the skin is gone. Even sometimes it’ll rip off anyway if the skin is folded while holding. Gymnastics is a touch sport. I did it for a couple years until my company shut down.
