Although I'm an ex-golfer these days, I thought that it might be useful to some if I shared my experience with oversize Grips in general and specifically JumboMax Grips. In my sixties, I started having problems with arthritis in the fingers and thumb of my left hand and it got so bad that I literally couldn't hold the club without intense pain. So in desperation, I turned to using oversized Grips rather than giving up the game. I am pleased to say that the change was a success and I managed to get another 10 years of golf before I finally had to quit. I had JumboMax XL (mid) fitted to all my Clubs and after making some adjustments to how I held the club they made a massive improvement. Rather than laying my left thumb (I'm right-handed) down the shaft I wrapped my thumb around the Grip as you would when gripping a hammer. But I continued to have a conventional overlap grip with my fingers. Moving my thumb made a massive difference and enabled me to play without pain👍👍 The larger Grips definitely reduce the amount that the wrists can "flip" and at first it meant that I tended to leave the club face open (particularly with my Driver). So to overcome this I preset my club face slightly closed when I gripped the club. This presetting of the clubface meant that I was getting a much stronger ball flight and this coupled with the absence of pain meant that I could swing harder/faster and I picked up quite a lot of distance as a result. There are only two downsides to fitting JumbkMax Grips, the first downside is that they aren't cheap so it is a bit of an investment (but much less than buying a new club). The second downside is that playing with a conventional smaller Grip becomes almost impossible, so testing new clubs becomes really difficult. Which might end up as a plus point because it means that you aren't tempted to test & buy too many new Clubs. I hope that this has helped anyone thinking of making the change.

I am in the process of switching to Jumbo Max medium grips. Tried one each on the driver, 8, 54. Swing was easier, grip was lighter, iron flight was higher without losing distance, and hands felt much better afterwards. Changing the reaminder of my MCC +4 when I receive my order.

I thought you did very well with the video. No lack of light and the beauty of the place is evident. I am 75 and never felt I had a good grip with my irons. I have tried all sorts of positions on my irons. Strong grip, weak grip and neutral grip. As I play, I always adjust my grip dependent on the golf shot: left, right or straight. Therefore, I am interested in the jumbo grips. Only time will tell.

I have been using Jumbo Max grips for about 2 years throughout the bag. I switched to them because of long term pain in my right wrist and elbow (“golfers elbow”) after a tip from a top amateur (County player, trying to qualify for the European Senior Tour) I met at my local driving range. I found the jumbo grips very natural to use and I won’t go back to “normal” grips. I tried one at first on an old hybrid, before fully committing. The pain in my wrist and elbow is reduced to about 20% as they help me grip the club lighter, and have less stress in my forearms, whilst retaining control. I have not noticed any detriment to my swing (H’cap index - 12.2). They are not cheap at about £17 each, but they are definitely worth it when the alternative is to give up golf. Fully recommended.

I've been using Jumbo grips for a few years, and love them! Specifically Golf Pride MCC Plus 4. They are recommended, and are outstanding, in the wet. And I love the Plus 4, without the taper, as I don't feel like I'm grabbing a pencil when I choke down on the club.

Andy, being a disabled golfer ( missing numerous fingers) I put regular grips on my clubs upside down (drill out the butt end of the grips) this gives me much better control. Many golfers (full fingered) have tried the grips and like the feel. There are certain companies that sell reverse taper grips so why not give those a try and see what you think, cheers Stumps.

I recommend viewing video of fitting a player for Jumbo Max grips. Packed with information about how Jumbo Max grips impact your swing. Have used oversize less taper grips for several years due to long fingers. Still fought over draw with irons and driver dispersion too large. As mentioned in the video, had to buy single Jumbo Max grips in order to try. Settled on the STR8 Medium Tour model for all clubs. Four rounds so far and very happy. Irons are consistently straight with occasional baby draw. Driver dispersion dramatically reduced with most recent round never missing a fairway. All irons are tending close to 10 yards longer. Have not noticed much change in ball flight height. Driver is the most surprising distance gain. Last round a drive came to rest at the edge of a creek never previously got within 30 yards of. I heard a game improvement tip that for me applies to the Jumbo Max grip change. Golf is easier when you try hard to not try hard. Never going back to smaller grips. Another one where mad scientist Bryson was right to question the status quo.

Switched to these this year when I started having problems with arthritis in my hands. I first thought I would have to stop playing golf, I tried every grip and golf glove but no help until I tried Jumbo Grips, it helped with the pain and my game. I’m a believer these really work, like anything in golf you have to get used to them but when you do!

Thanks for another great video! I've been playing golf for ~6 months, including ~2 months with Jumbomax grips. I got the bigger grips because I hit many balls in the sim and driving range, which was hurting my hands with normal grips, and to fix a persistent hook. I can now hit unlimited balls with no pain and I have mostly fixed the hook. Initially, it was difficult to draw the ball with the new grips, but I've figured that out. The grips also added significant distance to my drive, which was a nice surprise. The only real downside, which anyone considering switching to Jumbomax should be aware of, is that I now cannot use normal clubs at all, so I will need to take my own clubs with me everywhere I go as I won't be able to use spares or rental clubs.

Had to switch to jumbo grips out of necessity due to arthritis affecting my fingers. Bit of a game changer as it’s kept me playing. You make a great point about not being able to try them on demo clubs. I was fortunate that the pro who fitted mine did my 8 iron first and advised that I went to the range and hit a bucket load of balls. And if it felt ok only then would he do the rest of my irons and woods.

I have returned to the game of golf and after a few ops on my neck, leaving me with not feeling in various fingers….my old CPX grips were causing soreness and an inability to hold the club properly…. Looked at Jumbo S ( small) Zen Light grips, I put ES ( extra small) Jumbo grip on all my irons and S (small) on my woods. Complete game changer, no pain, swinging has got smoother and no loss of distance or feel. Now regular golf has started and already dropped one shot after a competition. Very early days but every time I hold a club, it feels spot and no pain issues…….

I swapped to jumbo grips in 2021 and seen my handicap go from 21 to 5.5 now. Every shot is straight and that's all I ask for! Putting on club grade greens is my issue now. An issue with the grips that I have not seen any reviewer cover. Grip weights, grips can be 70-80 grams, a swing weight issue! Adding lead tape then completely changes the flex of my shafts. I needed grips at 50 gram maximum. I discovered a light weight double sided foam tape using my 41 gram club supplied grips get the diameter for 6 grams of tape, cheap too £1 per grip ( not a golf product) Allowed me to stay at D3 short irons, D2 Mid irons and D1 long irons. If the suppliers got sensible about the prices I would buy prescribed grips.

Due to the onset of arthritis in both hands I decided to put jumbo grips on my clubs in a 3 week phased process, driver and fairway woods, wedges and then irons and putter. Yesterday was my first comp. fully jumbo gripped! I found that my driver and fairway wood play improved, my wedge play similar but my iron play was disappointing. Your description of the second 9 iron shot from the edge of the rough helped me understand my new swing need. The putter worked really well! Off to the Lakes this w/e, next stop Penrith and Windermere GCs.

Hannah B, I use mid size grips. Started on my wedges. To take some wrists out of the swing. Loved them so much, went full set. As for your low 5 iron, with "bigger grips" that take the wrists out, just move the ball forward a ball width, Bob's your Uncle as they say. 😁😁

I’ve played mid size grips for decades and experimented with the jumbomax due to some arthritis and discomfort hitting a lot of balls. Tried sw, 8 iron and driver and liked them and switched the entire set. I found I hit the ball a higher but it slowed my hands down and couldn’t draw the ball and lost feeling for touch shots around the green . They are quite expensive and a pain in the neck to install. In your video you had a few clubs in your carry bag. Try carrying a full set in a carry bag with those grips. . It’s a total pain in the butt. Buying and installing 13 of them is approximately $250 which is absurd. I paid $17 each plus a few bucks each to have them installed. The light ones are thin and wear fast in pressure spots. I played a season with them just fine but went back to golf pride tour wrap jumbo at $7.50 each and could install them myself. The biggest nuisance was not being able to fit them in the bag easily and always struggling to remove and insert them in a carry bag. They are not worth the time, expense , and inconvenience . Midsize with the 4 wraps or a plain jumbo grip will do the job much better at a fraction of the cost.

Andy A this week photo winner for me, another great video Andy and Hannah. I worked up near Appleby for months, many moons ago, but missed the golf course at the time, not sure the boss would have been happy with me sneaking off the job to grab a game. Was laying a couple of hundred kerbs a day, at the time, was a great summer, with plenty of sun on the back, while grafting to earn a crust. Appleby is a course many golfers intend to play due to its uniqueness, I still need to sort that out in 2025, with a trip planned in the Cumbrian area, play a course a day, fitting it into our busy seniors timetable is the hardest part. I already play jumbo grips, due to the size of my large hands, was thinking of trying the jumbo max grips, which after watching this Andy, just might be the way to go.

These grips are the best. Less pain and shock in the hand, wrist and fingers. Wild duck hooks and huge slices eliminated. Straight shots. More power transferred into the ball, because the grip has a larger surface area. I love them. My hands are larger than most though. So they fit me. If you're a taller, more thick set bloke with large hands, these grips are the best. Get what fits and let it rip.

I tried Jumbomax grips (the midsize) on one club as a test last year. I didn't end up using the full set but the test raised even more questions about the benefits of larger (or even proper size) grips. I ended up using a Royal Mid 360* Reduced Taper grip with two extra 5" strips of tape under my left hand. This makes the grip almost the same diameter across its length. The benefits for me included reduced draw/hook on shots--straighter ball flight, a few more yards of distance out of every club, more comfort, and less hand pain.

I have used Golf Pride jumbo grips for a year a would not change back. I'm into my seventies and this Suze of grip is far more comfortable than thinner grips and, for me, much more effective as I have a much more relaxed grip. I'm inclined to think that the usual thin grips are simply a hangover from the leather grips. If golf clubs were recently invented, no one would fit the traditional ridiculously thin grips!

I switched to oversized grips about a year ago. They're not jumbomax, rather oversized with a couple of layers of build up tape. Anyway, swithching back and forth between oversized and regular doesn't work at all for me. I like the oversized grips. I can grip much lighter (when I think about doing it) and this typically is helpful. Starting off, there is a tendancy to move the ball to the right, but that changes as you get used to them.

I had medium jumbos on for a few months and for the most part enjoyed them, although the swing weight of the clubs changed drastically. Another “issue” I discovered was when looking to purchase new clubs, especially via custom fit, as the demo clubs only come with standard grips on which feel like pencils compared to jumbomax and of course my swing has adapted to the jumbo grips whereby I couldn’t stop over-drawing normal grips, making the custom fit process somewhat redundant. As such I’ve gone back to standard gold pride jumbos - thicker than standards, but nowhere near the cricket bat grips of jumbomax. Seems a happy middle ground.

I think your comments were accurate. For those of us who don't have arthritis or other issues then regular grips will allow for more wrist action (a la Phil Mickelson), while larger grips require a fuller shoulder turn (a la Ernie Els) to mitigate the reduced hand action.

Interesting comment about being able to try them on clubs; I watched a PXG fitting recently where the fitter went through everything and then only dealt with the grips at the end (excuse the pun) and the client went for a jumbo grip. Given how much the grip could change the swing It’s completely illogical to deal with it last.

Photos: Hannah b for me I know Appleby GC, beautiful in Spring and whilst the weather is not ideal in November, the video showed the GC really well. Not really off the beaten track, it is just off the A66! I have thought about Jumbo grips, as I struggle with a bit too much grip pressure (strangling the club), and the bigger grip in theory should promote a lighter grip pressure. I would need to put it onto one iron (probably my 6i or 7i) and do some testing which is a bit costly. At my local indoor facility they had one on a wedge - I just could not get the ball flight down to sensible levels.

For starters, there are 2 sizes smaller than medium. It takes no time to research that. There have been many KZbin videos about these and they are definitely not for everyone. Many I have seen show golfers trying to grip the Jumbomax as if it were a regular si,e and put it in the fingers. For me, I hold them more in my palms. Bryson has some good technique advice for these. Again for my personal experience, they help my arthritic hands to play with less pain and quicker recovery.

In an attempt to balance the positives and perceived negatives, perhaps a bigger-than-standard-but-less-than-jumbo grip "holds" the answer? I've just ordered an iron with a medium grip (all my other clubs - other than my putter - have standards) and am looking forward to seeing if it takes a bit of my wristiness out without impeding what should be my proper hinging.

I’m a 6 h/c player - I’ve made the switch to jumbo ultra lite mediums my swing has not changed and my ball flight shape is the same - I think maybe you shud of tested the driver and 7 iron for a truer review on your pxg woods and irons - I can’t see how u can compare the grips when fitted to irons which you don’t regularly use! Surely even with your normal grips there is a different ball flight between the two sets! Looking forward to the indoor review.

1st all great photos hard to say which is the best. 2nd i hate those jumbo grips. I prefer the standard corded grips for the feel they provide in all conditions, hot or wet days as you feel confident with club in hand. Interesting using those mats, do they provide them or is it something you need to bring. Like the sheep on the course mowing and fertilizing great idea.

I tried those grips but found they restricted my ability to square the face and everything was a push right. I've gone back to mid-size MCC+4 but am looking for softer alternatives in that size. I'm giving a joint 'best photo' this week to Andy b and Hannah d. Both capture the nature and beaty of the course wonderfully and together they tell me everything I need to know about it. If you want to try a jumbo grip, just buy et wrap a tennis grip (5€) on your current golf grip. If it’s’not big enough, wrap a second one. I have been doing this for many years and I change them every 2 or 3 years. Works well.

The portable mats are not used on the majority of courses in the UK in winter. They are frequently used when a course is in play and is being prepared for The Open or another very important event. For example Delamere Forest GC in Cheshire is normal tees and greens all year round. It was closed for three days because of snow and one day because of several days torrential rain, in the last 12 months. (Based on sand).

What is the % of courses that use mats in Winter David or is this just a random statement? I can quote you many that have them in use right now but at no point did I use the word 'majority' I was merely offering an explanation as to what it was being used for

Mats only used when prepping for The Open? What an odd statement when talking about mats in use in general... In Scotland mats are used on the vast majority of courses over winter, unless its a links course.

@@TheAverageGolfercorrection I should have said England where my experience is more widespread. The only course I have experience this, except a course in preparation was Pleasington. It would be interesting to know if other experiences. It is very very infrequent. I am particularly conscious that these comments are viewed in other countries and I don’t want potential visitors to feel we are a no go country in winter, or on mats, portable or otherwise.

£35 guaranteed income for the club regardless of the weather. £40 on the day, and you may or may not turn up. Or thought about another way, £5 cancellation insurance just in case you don't fancy it/can't make it, etc. That's good value.
