Sorry for the video looking a bit worse this time! I haven't really filmed with two cameras like this before so I forgot to check focus on one of them :)))
I've been wanting to try my hand at pickup winding for the longest time, so I figured I'd document my first few attempts on camera! This was actually my second attempt at making a pickup. My first attempt was a Telecaster neck pickup, just as a tester to see how difficult it would actually be. And as it turns out, it's way more difficult than I thought, so that's fun. Let me know in the comments what you guys thought of the pickup!
I might start slowly transitioning my content towards more guitar gear related stuff, since it's a topic that I have a lot of fun talking about. And I hope you guys will enjoy it too!

All the parts (aside from the winder and the wire) was purchased from Alegree. They didn't sponsor this video, but if pickup building is something you're intersted in dipping your toes in, their website offers lots of different kits with most of the things you need to get started!
Check them out here!

IMHO, un-potted pickups are a touch more microphonic/articulate, of which I prefer. I'm playing through a Marshall 1987x and don't experience any feedback issues with unpotted pickups. Try unbalanced coils, the Gibson Burstbucker pickups have a few MORE 100 turns (200) on the slug coil, this provides a slightly more single coil tone/output. The Gibson '61 pickups utilize the same idea as burstbuckers except that they switch which coil is underwound, the '61 pickups underwind the slug coil giving a more balanced output between the coils. In general, all things being equal (bobbin windings), the slug coil will tend to dominate due to more mass/steel in the slug pole pieces (as compared to the adjustable screws). Winding pickups is great, the most difficult aspect of pickup winding is developing the ability to consistently wind/produce the same pickup over and over again. For a player wanting a pickup for personal use this really isn't a problem though. Great video, thanks for sharing, count me as a new subscriber.

You made a fun and interesting video! You weren't trying to pass yourself off as some ''expert'' on the subject and yet, you did some great making and experimenting, not to mention you've got some chops on the guitar and all in all I really liked the delivery, not to mention you made some great pickups! A million years ago I knew a bass player who'd made his own bass out of horrible materials, MDF and pine as well as making his own pickups - you know what? He was one of the best bass players I've ever encountered and his crap/ugly bass, in his hands, sounded beautiful. I think my point is that if we just repeat the received information, over and over again, we just get the same result, over and over again. We need people like yourself who are willing and able to stick their necks out and take chances - you know what I'm saying... keep up the great work!
