Marilyn almost resented her beauty. She felt it made her a joke. Many, many close friends would go on to say that MM did not care for fashion nor beauty. And this is backed up by the fact that Marilyn never owned any designer clothes nor make up. When Marilyn wasn't working she would not wear make up and would go days without washing her hair. She wore slacks and shirts. All her glam was provided by the studio because she was contractually obligated to appear beautiful during promotion tours and premieres. When her Seven Year Itch images were being plastered everywhere she is noted to have said, "That's what I am to people. That's what they think of me. A joke. Big breasts, big ass - big deal. I want to be more." I think it was her security blanket to be beautiful, but I doubt she ever really cared. Her home had more books than clothes, shoes, accessories, and make up combined.
@LarryOfilms6 жыл бұрын
celifacejones I’m a big MM fan and I agree with what you say but she does own a lot of designer clothes and base on her receipts she kept, she splurges a lot on high end stuff especially cosmetics and clothing.
@celifacejones6 жыл бұрын
Larry O Most of what she owned was given to her or sent to her. She rarely purchased make up or clothing. Near the end, she bought some Pucci and designer clothes - but they were purchased for photo shoots (specifically for the Allan Grant and George Barris shoot - she also rented an upscale house for that shoot). Throughout the 50s, MM lived in apartments and anything glam was provided by the studio. Even her make up kit was make up she had acquired through make up artists (mostly Snyder). When her belongings were itemized she had very few real jewels - most were costume jewelry pieces on hand from the studio. The only thing I can think of MM actually splurged on was perfume.
@LarryOfilms6 жыл бұрын
celifacejones I see, yeah there were a lot of receipts for items such as Ferragamo and Pucci so it looks that way and she bought things in multiples. I know she is a simple girl at heart like the slacks in the life magazine shoot she had for years before she was even famous but some reports claim she spent a lot as she’s always either in debt or breaking even so maybe it was all business expenses like beauty upkeep and fancy wardrobes.
@celifacejones6 жыл бұрын
Larry O Simple girl, but also notoriously underpaid. Even during GPB she was making a weekly salary of a contract player with no dressing room while Jane Russell made hundreds of thousands. It was Russell that convinced MM to stand up for herself. Even still, compared to the millions her peers were making, MM was one of the most underpaid stars of her time.
@LarryOfilms6 жыл бұрын
celifacejones yeah that is true and also the most mistreated. Heard a story that she was at a party and someone pulled her top down exposing her and she just laughed it off. Her life was tragic.

Well done! It should be noted that they recently found out Marilyn's make up routine actually took hours with many steps still a secret. She was THE make up artist; she knew how to make herself look "perfect". I'd love to see you try Mae West!

Longtime Marilyn fan here, I’ve read 100s of books about her. What I think is Marilyn knew she was beautiful, but she thought her allure was more coming from her body and her sexuality. She created “Marilyn” as a cover for Norma Jean. The cover had to be perfect and she did a lot to keep it perfect, but I don’t think she enjoyed it. Many say she would go without makeup and wouldn’t even wash her hair for days when she wasn’t working.

I could see that. The way those hairdos would prob take forever to make. Plus sure the girl needed a break
@geewiz82536 жыл бұрын
Spring Flowers Not washing your hair isn’t a lack of hygiene. It’s a known fact that it’s good not to wash your hair every day since it strips too much of your natural oils. Depending on hair type and length, one should only wash it every other day to every two to three days minimum.

Marilyn also used to put a dab of white shadow on the centre of her lips to enhance the full look and create dimension. Additionally, she would put a tiny dot of red eyeliner (or lip liner) near her tear-ducts/inner eye corners because the red colour made the whites of her eyes pop. Kind of disappointed you didn't include those.
@herpdederp125 жыл бұрын
I was watching a video of a ballet dancer doing her makeup for a performance a few days ago and she did the red dot in the outer corner of the eye. I had never even heard of this before

I think this is very close to the original. However, excuse my observation but, Im fairly certain (source- my grandmothers exact copy of this fashionable then look) that the eyeliner she applied on the lower lashline was just a slightly V line on the outer corner going outwards in the shape of the shadow of her upper eyelashes.. The rest of the brown eyeliner was applied inside the waterline and with a slight touch of pearly white eyeshadow underneath on the middle of the eye bags. The brushes used at the time were all extremely delicate and pointy. Her look was all about precision and pearly white clean shine!

I love Marilyn and her story. I’m so glad more people are starting to be more interested in learning more about her person on top of the obsession with her movie star persona and sex icon status. She was so complicated and surprisingly relateable. She constantly struggled with depression and feeling unloved, even at the height of her fame. She divorced her first husband so she could pursue a film career, but spent it longing for a family she was never able to have with any of her three husbands. She was constantly fighting to be taken seriously as an actor, but all anyone paid for was her blonde bimbo act, so she used interviews to flex how smart and witty she really was.
