Haven't even gotten through the first gadget yet, but I had to comment about the left-handed clock. My barber actually has one of these clocks set on the wall opposite the mirror so when you're getting your haircut and you look in the mirror you see the time in the correct fashion, always thought it was kind of neat.

I think the left-handed thing with the exacto-knives is in what direction the blade-retractor faces when you hold it. with a right-handed exacto-knive the thumb-push-thing is in the palm of your hands while the blade is facing down, with the left-handed knife the pusher is near your thumb
@jonjones8611

Yes, we use those box knives at work and they're made to be safer than other box knives. We use the S4 version, he has the S3, not sure about model difference. Red ones are left handed, right handed ones are green. The only difference is which side the blade retractor is on and which side the metal guard at the front is on. Having the retractor on the side where your thumb is makes it easier to open and close quickly. Also, the metal piece at the front is a thumb rest for topping boxes. When the blade is in the first position it only protrudes a tiny bit and doesn't go past the medal guard, making it safer to use. You then put your thumb on the back of the guard and can cut the tops off of boxes if you need to do that, but it's rare that I've ever done that. The guard also has a small notch on the end called a tape splitter. It's used to cut the tape on boxes without using the actual blade and, in my experience, works great.

Exactly. You can see him extracting the left one with his left hand and with the righthanded one, he first opens it with his right hand and then he takes it in his left hand. We are so used to doing that that we don't even realise it most of the time that it's different and more complicated to use tools designed for right handed people

As an ambidextrous person, a bit like Barry, I've been doing it the same as he has and hating that my numbers are upside down - or questioning how I'm managing to use a tapemeasure wrong -- will have to replace my tape measure with a leftie one unnecessary context - my "dominant" hand is right but as I'm getting older and picking up new/random skills, I do more and more left handed - but my great grandma tried to slap the leftness out of me when I was a kid because she was of that last generation where lefthandedness was wrong and she looked after me as a tiny kid before I went to school while my parents worked

Lefty-here. Left-handed bread knives in particular are a thing because bread knives are usually serrated on one side - the left side. The serration is meant to counteract the natural way your wrist wants to rotate up when using the knife. If you use a right-handed (serrated) knife in your left hand, it will exacerbate the way your wrist wants to rotate up. Having a left-handed knife with the serrated side on the right side of the knife helps to stop your wrist from wanting to rotate up. It's similar with scissors, not counting the ones with ergonomic handles. A standard, right-handed scissors has the bottom blade on the left, or inside and that lets you see what you're cutting while you're cutting. Using a standard scissors in your left hand doesn't let you do that and that's why things can end up curving or crooked. There's also some physics regarding pulling/pushing the blades apart. Left-handed people using a right handed scissors may slightly push the blades apart instead of pushing them together like a right-handed person does.

@smwarneke
@smwarneke 3 жыл бұрын
@@katelawrence7445 That's unfortunately a common problem with "left-handed" stuff. A lot of companies will just reverse the handle/grip and think it's good enough, when it actually isn't. I hate that this is the case and that I have to pay more to get something that I can use properly/safely just because I'm left-handed. Personally, I'm so used to using a scissors right-handed that I don't bother looking for a true left-handed pair.

I'm a lefty that used to cut with her left hand, and since my brother is the same we used to have lefty scissors at home. But eventually I learned to cut with my right hand as it was more common for regular scissors to be available, and now I couldn't go back to lefty ones. As for mugs, the difference is that you can see the design. Most mugs have it so you see it when you hold the mug with your right hand. It's extra funny when bartenders go through the trouble of making you a heart design on your coffee, but if you hold it with your left they've basically just handed you a butt xD

8:55 There's actually four different kinds of handedness: Left-handed, right-handed, "cross-handed", and ambidextrous. People who're cross-handed switch between their right and left hands like you do, and it's pretty common at about 20-30% of the population. That's different from being "true" ambidextrous where you can use both your hands equally well, but nobody who isn't a nerd ever hears of cross-handedness so the two get confused a lot!

The left-handed Stanley knife has the blade control (to extend/pull back the blade) on the other side. We righties use our thumbs for that. In the left-handed version, you can do the same. It makes it a bit safer to use, I think, since you can pull back the blade when you're done using the knife, without having to switch hands or anything like that.

When you' re lefthanded and use "standart" scissors you don't see the line you cut. Most lefthanded kids are holding it sloped (almost horizontaly) to see where they should cut. And paper bends over the edge making cut uneven. If you learn to use righthanded scissors at first (at the age of preschooler) or your right hand to cut lefthanded scissors would automaticly "feel wrong" in your hand

Left-handed scissors have a place when you're trying to cut along a line due to the different point of view, whereas using right-handed scissors you'll tend to cut on the wrong side of the line or find yourself veering off at an angle. In terms of peelers, I've got one from chef'n that slips over your middle finger and you support in your palm. Works a treat. Sadly they've replaced it with an updated version now, however.

My left hand was always completely blue from writing even though they gave me a pen that was supposedly especially for lefthanded people. Only thing different from the righthanded ones was the outside color of the pen. 🙈 The same still happens with ballpens, but its not as bad as with those fountainpens

I worked for a grocery store for years, that left handed safety cutter comes in right and left hand. The guard and blade settings are for doing tray cuts, top cuts, and cutting wrap and tape on cases of canned goods. If you set it at the minimum blade extension you can ride the top edge of the case with the guard and just take the top off without damaging cans/boxes inside. The next is usually for tray cutting, removing most of the top of the box and leaving a tray for the goods to sit in. Helpful when stacking product for displays. The last setting, and longest is for cutting plastic wrap or tape away from cases or pallets.

I work in a warehouse environment, and those are the kind of retractable knives we use. The best way to use it is to cut the entire lid of the box by slicing at an angle along the perimeter of the box. When cutting tonnes of boxes to stock pick shelves, it is the only way to make your percentage.

I'm three years late to this video but as a lefty when I need to slice bread, I use a carving fork to guide the knife like I'm carving a chicken or something. I stayed with some friends recently and we cooked breakfast together, they assigned me the role of slicing a whole loaf of bread with an unfamiliar bread knife and no fork. Probably not my finest work. The clockwise/anticlockwise thing in general comes up far more often than people realise, from turning on taps, to sharpening pencils, and loads of other stuff. Also men's clothes are designed to button and zip right-handed, so you have to reach over/under the overlap of material to fasten them left-handed. Women's clothes are usually designed the other way around, because historically their clothes would have been fastened by their servants, so they're designed to be fastened by a right-handed person facing the woman, and not by the wearer herself.

The left handed knife you had was designed as a box cutter. The metal guide at the end is designed so that you can quickly slide the blade around the top of a box and remove the entire top without cutting down low enough to damage the contents.

Here in the US, due to our rejection of the metric system, most tape measures are ambidextrous. The marks (in imperial) are usually mirrored on each side of tape. The only concern would be the placement of the belt hook. I usually just remove that and put my tape in a holster. You can find metric tapes, but they aren’t very useful as most building plans are written in imperial. I’ve spoken to a few tradespeople who immigrated here about switching from metric. It’s not usually a huge deal as they just work to the measurements given. Also, imperial is quite a bit sloppier, usually never more specific than 16ths of an inch for construction purposes, making it a bit faster for them hit the measurement they need. They can read and make use of the imperial measurements, but they never really feel like they understand it.

Most left-handed folks didn’t have access to left handed items so from our childhood we learned to use what was available-ergo no efficient way of changing when left handed items became available. I also use my right hand for doing anything that might injure my left I.e. tennis, bowling (my left hand is required to writing, signing or drawing. For bread slicing, I got a guide that lets me do uniform slices-any width. I do like straight slices.

I use one of those stanley blades at my work. You use the metal prong thingy on the end as a guide for cutting the top off a box. You can also use it to pry up the flaps of boxes that are glued down instead of taped. Very handy (pun intended).

As left handers, we have had to get used to living in a right handed world and so have put up with using tools designed by and for right handers. I was given a left handed serrated knife years ago and it made such a difference to my ability to cut things straight. Mine is a utility knife but I really could do with one of those bread knives.

Leftie here... and yeah, i do things like that. I've adapted and i use scissors with my right hand... i even use the computer mouse or knives with my right. But whenever i have to write, do something with a strong grip, or pick up things... i use the left hand. It works for me, so i'm not complaining, but it amazes me how "righty" the world is manufactured.

I work in a grocery store, and that left-handed Stanley knife/safety cutter is the exact one I use every day! It has a notch in the thumb guard to slice through tape without even getting the blade out, and the body is curved to fit better in the left hand so you can extend and retract the blade with your thumb. The right-handed ones are green instead of red, but otherwise the exact mirror image. They get the job done well, except they constantly fall out of the cheap plastic holsters they come with and mine always rattles around as I walk.

Hi Barry! Not sure if this was mentioned but with the Stanley knife, we use these at work. Or very similar ones. The red is for left handed, the green is right handed. It’s not because of how the blade cuts but the safety piece. That metal piece covering the blade helps protect from over exposure and cutting yourself. So if it was a right handed box cutter, it should be the opposite a left handed :)

I just saw this. The clock is GREAT. I had one before. Finally was able to glance and see the time i stead of needing to study it first. If you only cut with your left hand the scissors are magic. I was able to cut on the line with them instead of missing the line and not getting straight cuts. The bread knife sounds good too but the others dont waste your time. You are probably doing fine without them.

I'm a lefty, and getting older.. Because I am getting older, the struggle is real. Can opener..( call my kids to open cans) then they bought me an electric can opener, that worked for me..Their struggle is that I do the dishes backwards. Think ..most counter space is left sink right sink and counter space to dry on the right. And my cupboards are spices on left of the stove, utensils on the left, pots and pans on left.. And my hobby is sewing, crocheting, knitting.. WELL now I tell you.. those instructions are all written for right handed people. AND I was a hairdresser. Scissors!! When I went to school they told me just watch how it is done in the mirror! They don't get it! We somehow just figure it out on our own!
