Hey Ghib, I've always wondered why some words in Hokkien sound almost identical to Japanese? like 世界 (sekai) and 未来 (m/b-irai) etc. Maybe there's something interesting to uncover there.

cos' the Japanese borrowed words from the chinese. If you notice those kanji words in japanese, most of them are identical in meaning to the chinese Han characters.

Because Japanese heavily borrowed words and kanji during the Tang dynasty, which is the origins of the modern hokkien language. Which is why in hokkien, we call ourselves" teng lang", 唐人, meaning tang people.
