My Taiwanese friend James is leaving Singapore after living here for a little over a year. What is the reason? What's his plans? What did he like / not like about Singapore and what will he miss? I asked him everything in this video.

Honestly, felt a tinge of sadness to learn James is leaving Singapore, but I guess if you want to explore the world, then it is good that you do it when you’re young, cause once time passes , you certainly can’t turn back the clock. Wishing James all the best in his future endeavours.

James, if you havent already bought your ticket to Alaska, don't. I did that when I was in college. If your plan is to make money, save, and go back to Japan your going to be disappointed. The cost to get to Alaska, buy camping gear (I'm assuming you are going to live in a tent city) and then survive on decent food is expensive. Almost all fresh food is imported from "the lower 48" states. The cost can be more than double. The reason why the pay is so good isn't just because of the high cost of living but because of the dangerous conditions and the crappy weather. It's hard to attract anyone sane to do dangerous shitty work. Most of the tent cities are full of drug addicts, homeless, fugitives, and college kids. So if you are going to party, or you want to disappear, you can expect to do so there. Alaska attracts a lot of southerners too. Texans, etc. So expect a lot of racism. During this period of covid19 you should be much more cautious. Lastly, before I get into the positive stuff, there's a lot of competition for work. Most of the canneries don't pay much but the fishing companies, independent boats, docks do. Problem is that most of the small boat companies have crew returning from prior seasons. I would suggest you go to Alaska to travel and spend your money. It's beautiful there. Meet some native Alaskans/Tribal people. They are some of the nicest people you will ever meet. I had one of the best adventures of my life there. But i also almost died four times. Once before the fishing season I was too lazy to boil the water while hiking. It's called beaver fever for a reason. I had "the runs" for almost three weeks. Another time I was mock charged by a moose. And once I fell off a skiff and got hypothermia but the water was too rough to go back to shore right away. Always carry bear spray/preferably a gun( .44 magnum or larger), travel with two people and let people know where and when you're going and returning. Wear bear bells when you hike. Carry a lot of 1st aid and tampons to stop bleeding. And follow the rules at camp sites. When I went up in 1992 I was an idiot. I was going because I thought I got a girl pregnant and I needed to make a lot of money fast. It ended up that the kid wasn't mine...but that's another story. Anyway, at the end of the season I went hiking by myself. I had about $1,000 worth of gear which was a lot of money back then and I ended up at a camp ground near Denali Nat'l park. I cooked dinner, ate, but didn't store my food in a bear proof box or 50 meters away. Instead I kept it with me. That night I ended up spending the better part of the night freezing my ass off under a picnic table/bench watching a bear tear through my tent, pack, and down jacket, eat my left overs and other supplies. Even after the bear left I stayed under the table because it was dark and I was afraid the bear was still nearby. Even though I wasn't harmed physically, I consider this a near death experience. Boil all your drinking water. I got ghirardia because I thought the water was too cold for any bacteria to live in it. Carry some sterilizing tablets too. Otherwise you'll end up spending a lot of time running to the toilet or woods. Back then the doctors visits were onlyabout $200 plus meds. It's called flagl(sp?). Lastly, wild animals are not going to let you pet them. Even if they look friendly don't go up to them. Especially moose. Your money is better spent hiring a japanese exchange student tutor from Cheng Da or Tai Da and then going to Japan after you've saved more money. Alaska is really one of the most beautiful places youll ever visit. It would be a terrible shame to only spend time working. You could easily spend years there hiking, fishing, hunting, taking pictures of awesome scenery and most impotantly getting to know the Tribal people. Happy Travels. Stay Safe, Be Well, God Bless.

I feel the same as James, that's why I moved to japan from sg. Although experience is really subjective, I have really high expectations for Japan, but I could say life here is even better than I've expected. Without knowing anyone in Tokyo, I have received tremendous help from many many people, especially during this pandemic, including financial/housing, etc. Through these amazing experiences, I felt like I should give back to society, so I joined the local community and volunteered at the fire station. This is something I have never thought of when I was in Singapore. I think as long as you respect the culture and are willing to adapt to it( like learning Keigo/礼儀作法 and the logic behind them), you will start to feel the inclusiveness of Japanese society. If you are an introvert Japan is probably the most relaxed place on earth.

I’ve been going to Jaggi’s for over 15 years. It’s a very good and reasonably priced Punjabi restaurant, but no frills as you experienced, yet immensely satisfying. You should have the chicken tikka instead of the tandoori if you like it moist. Personal faves include; kheema (mince lamb), lamb chop (Saturday’s), mutton and chicken biryani (not quite the Hyderabad style, but very nice), aloo gobi (cauliflower and potato). Try out 2 veggies and 2 meats next time, and ask for the mango lassi (drink)

Most Taiwanese love Japan . I think we are very influenced by Japanese culture . Not long ago my grandma grandpa spoke Japanese as official language. However I found out to love Japan and really living there are very different. The real Japanese culture which makes me feel a bit hard to get used to. Especially friendship part. Very hard to really be their friends. Japanese still love to have their own Japanese circle. Unlike Taiwanese. Taiwanese is more open to everyone. Very friendly can be a scary too. Not all people can get used to super friendly Taiwanese. My Japanese friend was shocked when I showered her with lots of presents I brought back from Taiwan or even from Japan. Hokkaido is very cold in winter. Good luck! I think you will miss Sg sun a lot . I also learn Japanese too. When I was in Japan i could improve a lot in one week. In Singapore it’s like no way to use Japanese .
