Hi! Thanks for watching Beta Test, if you have any questions about the surf ranch I'll do my best to answer 👍

Lexy Savvides + We call that place - Sunset Blvd, if you're in LA. Or a nondescript beach break with no crowds. Get you skills 'right' - then you'll have a better shot at staying up for the length of the pool. I blame the assignment desk... they should've gotten you lessons with a couple months lead-time (minimum) - or just asked around - to see who surfs on the staff. I don't blame you. It was a tall order. The real question is how you avoided water contact in Australia, for all those years...

My advice to beginners is to enjoy the wave any way you can - there's nothing wrong with riding on your stomach all the way to the beach

This new technology is going to revolutionize surfing. In fact, it already has. Soon, surfing contests will be held in the artificial wave venues. This will allow for standardization which will makes scoring easier. Lost will be the impact of wave selection, paddling efficiencies and general ocean skills. There may remain some open ocean or beach surf contests for this very reason. But the future of surf contests is very bright. Watch the next Summer Olympics and see if surfing isn’t a big event.

Great video. I just wonder what kind of engine powers that thing and what the fuel consumption might be :)
@LexySavvides6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! There are winches at either end that pull the rope that has the hydrofoil. It's actually run off solar energy bought from the grid, but as far as power consumption, that detail wasn't disclosed.

Why do I think that Ashley Esqueda would have been ripping? Oh... that's right... She sat-in with Foo Fighters - and KILLED IT! Boooo to CNET. You were asking alot of your correspondent - you should have sent someone with at least SOME surfing abilities, or else what's the point? The reason that wave is so cool - is because of how perfect it is... how long you can ride it, how hard it barrels compared to other wave pools - even real Ocean waves (90% + of the time). But to take advantage of that... you need at least some ability; something to compare to.

The base being concrete sounds like a terrible idea. However with all the money and engineering that went into this project I'm sure someone compared the different types of materiel for the bottom of the pool and decided concrete was the best solution. Wonder if it has to do with the wave generation. Maybe it takes less power as there is less drag as if there was sand.

Lexy Savvides - You should practice in the ocean. Build your skills up - THEN go back. They should have given you one of those body boards... would probably have been easier/more fun. I hope Australia never sees this... they'll say that you've really 'let down the side'.

What else would they make it out of? Rubber? If they used a sand bed the sand would shift and the wave wouldn't break as intended. And in any case this is much safer than surfing a reef-break in the ocean at the same size -less sharp and much more predictable.

They built a GIANT wave pool in drought-stricken California???
@woodengiraffe6 жыл бұрын
it was already built..they just repurposed the unused property.
@anotherworldviewispossible6 жыл бұрын
The Drought was effectively over - before Jerry Brown even declared it an "Emergency". The crisis in California is a crisis of GREED and overdevelopment. Our water cycles are fairly predictable, and they swing from one extreme to the other. The problem is a business model based upon endless growth - like cancer. The Water in that pool is being well-used.
