soooo... I tried Sylvia Plath's daily routine (one of the many she had throughout her life) and I really enjoyed it! I hope you enjoy watching me follow her routine :)
Sylvia's routine:
6:30 - wake up, breakfast, get ready for the day
8:30-12:30 - write
12:30-2:00 - lunch
2:00-4:00 - clean, journal, see friends, whatever needs doing
4:00-6:00 - write, again
6:00-8:00 - dinner
8:00 - relax, read, get ready for bed, bed by 10

Writing routines are very interesting, seems many famous writers basically made it by desire and discipline alone. The more the better.

That is what it seems to boil down to, but maybe that makes it seem more attainable to aspiring writers 😊 Thanks for watching!

it is timeless and like a breath of fresh air in the poetry world, i think that’s why people still gravitate to it.

Very interesting. Thank you. I have never heard the voice of Sylvia reading her poetry and found that very inspiring. The only author I can think of regarding a writing routine is Jane Austin. She used to write at a tiny desk when she lived at the last house that her brother gave to her and her sister and mother. Jane would be determined to write each day and I have heard she had a morning writing routine. She hated to be disturbed when writing as it broke her concentration. There is a good film about her life, not 'becoming Jane' but I just can't remember the name of it. Anyway it featured her tiny writing desk.

ooh! Such a good suggestion! I’ll definitely look into it. I’m reading one of her books at the moment, so I’m definitely interested in her writing routine!

@@ingerlouise That is good news and of course there is always Emily Bronte! who took care of the housework and baking, walked on the moors and did some amazing writing.

yes! Another great suggestion, I might do one where I try all three the Brontë sisters’ routines… I wonder how similar or different their routines would have been.

Thank you for another really good video, I find these incredibly interesting and you can also get ideas from them. You make a great point about the effects of a writing routine, it seems so counter intuitive at first, but then it makes sense. Neil Gaiman says that he sets a time to write and during that time, he can not write but he can't do anything else, either you're staring at the void or writing. I tried it during some time and was surprised to see that instead of torture and exasperation for want of ideas it actually was very productive and made me a better writer.

That is so true! I think we always make sitting down to write such a big thing in our heads that it then becomes too overwhelming for us to even try. Whereas if we were to just sit down for a bit and not put pressure on ourselves; that’s when the magic happens! Thanks for watching José!

DIdn't she also have a study routine? She's a top student. Graduated Magna Cum Laude and is also a president of some club.

yes, i’m sure she did… but it’d probably be quite hard to find information about her study routine unless i went and read all of her published journals and letters, i think. it would be interesting to know how different (or similar) her studying and writing routines were though… something to think about for a future video, thank you!

My routine is I go to a cafe at around 1 and just write for about 3 hours. If i write any earlier than that, i just get tired and don't produce much. I also find it very hard to write at home..I always have to be somewhere for some reason. It's also really hard to stick to routines when you're depressed but this one seems to be working well.

why did you choose Sylvia Plath's daily routine as one of your KZbin videos? And also, would you do the same thing with Stephan King and Stefan Zweig's daily routine as well? My friend and I love your videos! 👍🏻🙏🏻✨

I get into these tiny obsessions with people when I really admire their work or the impact they had on the world in their lifetimes. And as someone who writes, but doesn’t make enough time for it, I find it interesting to see how other writers structured their lives in order to be have the time to write- even if it was just for a few hours a week- and to create work that stands the test of time. Will definitely try to do Stephen King’s routine, I’ve never heard of Stefan Zweig, but I’ll look into him!

I used to think Sylvia Plath was so cool, yet when I finally did hear her voice reading- - I was only left with the horrible impression of haughtiness and privilege. Now I know she was just batshit crazy, lol

Yes, absolutely. She mainly appeals to my dark side. I enjoy the cryptic and intense. I am saddened she went out like that. I struggle with mental illness myself. Perhaps why I can grasp her words. Experiencing her work first, then finding her voice- made me think she was opposites.

Don't say that Sylvia "had trouble sticking to a routine"...she had kids. They will disrupt your routines despite your best efforts, ESPECIALLY if you lose childcare for them which it sounds like she did when she no longer had her husband's help. Sounds like she did excellent with the time and resources she had. This KZbinr obviously has never had children.
@ingerlouise
@ingerlouise 27 күн бұрын
You’re right, kids will disrupt any routine you try to follow, however, the routine I was following here was the one she had when she was in her early twenties, BEFORE she had children. And from all the research I did, it seems she had trouble sticking to her routines (likely due to mental health troubles) even before she had kids.
