I Tried the Asia Expansion Project for CK3

Honestly, I never got why Asia is kept only to Siberia in the vanilla game, when there was A WHOLE LOT MORE going on there than the game implies, such as the Chinese dynasties, Japanese solidification and the multiple states in the South East.

Medieval China was arguably the most prosperous place in the world during the medieval period so I would say their exclusion is pretty insane tbh. But the performance reason isn’t unwarranted either. It would tank a lot of computers.

I always assumed it was for performance reasons more than anything - I remember the point at which they expanded the map to include India in CK2 and the performance really tanked for a good few weeks until they stabilised it. There's definitely room for them to do so in a similar way.

@@CameronAB122 The regions already on the map need more development before they add new ones like all of east asia. Like the Byzantines have such weak mechanics and flavor pre roads to power and theyre so important.

i love this mod, i still play mostly in vanilla regions but the fact that as hexi or tibet i still have something east of me helps both with immersion and gameplay

So you usually will see the performances hit extremely hard when you get to mid game. Especially if you have massive forces like Song at war. In my personal game being allied with Japan and doing an invasion on Song (with a formed Tibet as their ally) made my PC be play like a power point

1:52 Korea was never not-independent post the Four Commanderies(108 BCE~314 AD) period. It was, at the most, tributary of various dynasties, and Goryeo dynasty(which was a vassal of Mongolian Yuan dynasty, but they enjoyed the most powerful status out of all of the other, because of Mongols fearing that, should another war break out with the Koreans, it would be very harsh and costly. The first invasions took them 30 years to finally quell the last resistances!) stood out the most. They engaged in quite a hostile diplomacy against the newly-established Song dynasty, and even threatened them with the possibility of allying with the Northern dynasties such as Liao and Jin, to gain much wealth and advantage over the Song.

Fun fact: the Fujiwara clan became a shell of their former selves by the time of Oda Nobunaga(1600s). Only having power over Dewa-Mutsu region. They are replaced by the Ashikaga Clan- then by Tokugawa Gigachad himself. I’m also hyped for the Northern court vs Southern court struggle mechanic for the new start date. (Shogunate already has it though)

People rarely run just one mod, so performance issues are especially significant when you try to run your normal playset with Asia Expansion. Also, you have to wait until number of characters increases: since the area is bigger, the number of characters will increase faster too. With CK3 you have a snowball effect, initially everything is fine, but after a time the game is just unplayable. I guess plagues were supposed to slow this down, although they take some processing power themselves too. This should be even more problematic after new DLC which introduces an entirely new category of characters. I agree that Asia Expansion is a very well made mod, but you really have to play a nearly vanilla game with this one, not to have any performance issues.

This mod is fun. A lot of times it'll add wandering characters of East Asian cultures who I can recruit. I like having them raise my heirs so I can recruit the unique men at arms and then convert back to whatever culture I was playing before after I've bolstered my army with chu ko nu or samurai

IMHO, without something like CK2 trade post or any good trade system like from EU4 or Imperator it is less interesting to play as landed ruler expanding to eastern region, without resorting to blobbing. However the upcoming Roads to Power DLC would make landless journey being even much bigger and you can replicate Ibn Batutta and Marco Polo exact journey! I always like to play as Immortal character who roam the earth to learn and gather much, instead of stuck in the middle of nowhere fief. Also lastly and it is minor issue, but is this mod has unique crossbowmen retinue for Chinese culture? Because Asian Crossbows were very different than European ones, imagine something like Greek Gastraphetes and Roman Arcuballista but with volley firing tactic.
