Nice to see a Gretsch review on the channel! Thoroughly impressed with the meticulous fit and finish on the MIJ Gretsches. They pay ultra-close attention to vintage specs. Been a Gretsch owner since 1963, starting with a Harrison-spec Country Gent before anyone knew who George was. Very surprised not to see an access port under the backpad; the access port is why the company started putting backpads on the higher-end models. IIRC the original late-'50s/early-'60s Anniversaries didn't have it. Coo vid, as always. Thanks,Austin!
@snoolee795012 күн бұрын
Weirdly and completely unexpectedly out of character, my MiJ model the Bigsby was mounted slight off to one side. I noticed it when the strings were not centered on the pickups when I centered the bridge inline with the strings. Incredible that they let it out the door with this error. No issue for me since I changed to the non-tremolo tailpiece and had to drill new holes. Quite a surprise, though. I have high respect for the MiJ Gretsch artisans and I am thankful for them. Only place I know where you can get a $5k build for 2.5-3k dollars. I fell in love with this paint color from when I was a teen and there was a single pickup model in a pawn shop with that fabulous gray/green color, but the neck needed a reset and the action was real high, unplayable. If I saw it today I would buy it and get someone to do a neck reset. I should look for one from the original era. Single neck pickup and sinfully ugly. At the time my guitar was a Kalamazoo Epiphone Sorrento that played like a dream.

Yes. They were added in 1962 on models with the mute system. Martin also plays a Falcon which is one of the models that got the back pad. I’m assuming he just likes it so had it added to his custom Annie, even though it doesn’t have the mutes. Martin really knows what he likes. He has vintage Gretsches at home, but tours with replicas made by a UK luthier dialed into his specs.

Depeche Mode is "Fast Fashion". Having grown up with the band I thought I'd mention this.
@realdocloco12 күн бұрын
Actually, the french "Depeche" has two different meanings: 1/ hurry ("dépêche-toi" meaning "hurry up") 2/ a communication transmitted quickly (usually by telegraph) (like in "the general sent a depeche to his troops, ordering to attack"). For the magazine "Depeche Mode", it was very likely the second meaning.
@hermanturnip398411 күн бұрын
I agree that "fast fashion" is a common mistranslation but it's one that was applied to and accepted by the band. Growing up in the 80's it was commonly cited in radio, TV, and print and applied to Depeche Mode. I guess I should have been more clear on this in my original comment.

@@snoolee7950 I do know a good guitar when I see it. My 1966 Fender Tele is such a one, as are my three Japanese made Gretsches; two Jets - a 6138T-57, a 6131T-TVP - and a Billy-Bo. That said, I also know a good guitar for the price when I see it, and my two Chinese Gretsches - a 5422TG and a 5210-P90 are just that. Cost of manufacturing will account for a lot of the difference in price. The 5210 has a few sharp fret ends, but nothing bad enough for me to be bothered about fixing, but at a quarter of the cost of the other two Jets it is remarkably good value, and plays and sounds great. There are no issues at all with the 5422TG, that's a beautiful looking and great sounding guitar, in all its orange gloriousness. The only thing I've changed with the two of them is the colour of the fingerboard - whilst laurel feels ok I'm not partial to the light shade of it, so I've darkened both with applications of Montypresso relic wax. One is now the shade of rosewood, the other closer to ebony (the trick is to run a hairdryer over it so it sinks into the fingerboard well).

Gretsch guitars became popular with many post-punk bands and players in psychobilly and proto-goth and indie outfits in the 1980s. Players like Billy Duffy of The Cult, Matthew Ashman of Bow Wow Wow and Rocco Barker of Flesh for Lulu would all play a White Falcon. Poison Ivy of The Cramps, King Kurt, Treebound Story would all also use Gretsches. The distorted jangly sound and ostentatious rock and roll image of the instruments fitted well with that scene.

I believe that Martin had a couple of Gretsch copies made by guitar maker Dick Knight (who also made a couple of basses Simon Gallup back in the day). What a fantastic band, nice to see this guitar of MLG. ( For reference I think there's a Musician magazine article about the Knight guirars from the '90s)

The vintage Anniversaries don't have that pad. Gretsch used that pad on some of their guitars to cover a fist-sized hole routed in the back. A lot of them had painted-on F-holes, and otherwise it was impossible to install the electronics, and often the associated flip-on string dampers. Here it's a stylistic choice.
@stuartbrambell957712 күн бұрын
Here it's a style choice but typically gretsch use these to hide an access hole on the back to get at all their fancy switches on more primo models like country gentlemen and the like, especially as some gretsches don't have actual F holes

In those days, their main songwriter was Vince Clarke (Yazoo/Erasure) and it was an all-electronic band - three monophonic synths and the drums on a Teac A3440 reel-to-reel tape machine centre stage on a flight case. Not a guitar in sight! Fletch, who in those days, played bass synth told me the idea was that they could carry all their gear to gigs on the train or a bus because none of them had a car.

When DM's first album came out in 1981, I had it ... I was 12 and saw them perform on Top of the Pops while visiting my grandparents in England. It felt weird to me when they first introduced (or at least made it prominent) guitar on their songs, because I was totally into them as harbingers of synth. That was a relatively new sound at the time, and it defined what sort of band DM were to me.

Every modern Gretsch I’ve picked up has felt incredible from the 300 ish dollar models all the way up to 3000 plus, the necks and action seems very consistent across a lot of models so they’re definitely doing something right. I really want a Penguin but they’re very expensive. Wish they made an Indonesian or since they’re owned by fender a Mexican penguin with the Japanese woods at least. The only thing I don’t like about the affordable Gretsch models is the ugly rosewood alternative fretboards. If you can’t put real rosewood on them slap some ebony before you put a Pontiac Fiero board on it.

Huge thanks to the buyer for sharing this one with us, I was quite curious about it being a huge Depeche Mode fan!

Ever since I traded my AR420 Ibanez for a G5655T QM Gretsch I’ve been a Gretsch fan! This green one is absolutely beautiful!

I have this guitar. Not the MG model, but one like Martin plays. MiJ. I just like the way it is made, superb built. Keeper for me. I think those very interesting wood blocks added some weight to the guitar in your video. It sounds great. I love the puke green. Baby food green. The MG model looks a little more lime green, which is kind of weird. I'd buy it again. Yes yes and yes. Only the MiJ models.Mine has the open tuners like an old Martin, which I prefer. It came with a Bigsby and I changed it to the tailpiece like in your video. Mine (and Martin's) does not have the retro pad on the back. That's a Gretsch thing from the '60's. The pad and the internal blocking is adding weight to that guitar. Hey Trog, no point in talking about is there flame on the maple inside the guitar, since it is pressed plywood like an ES-175.

Trog I purchased a fairly rare GRETCH Pearl JET about a year ago ! I do a lot electrical work and repairs and I must say the electronics inside this guitar R absolutely impeccable, the best I've seen in years ! also the Pearl JET was built in Japan ! oh ya that's the O'le country gentleman pad and was an option on there f hole guitars in the 50's-60's, most the units I saw usually had a bad odor !

I've never really felt drawn to the Gretsch brand and I wasn't expecting to like the sound, but wow, it sounds great both clean and distorted. And I love the colour.

This guitar is pretty great, even if green isn't your thing, it's got great tones right at your fingertips. Like a nice, or bad, 2-tone suit. Still, it's a pretty sharp guitar.
