The Gaston is named after Gaston Rèbuffat. He displayed the technique for climbing off widths in the book ‘On Rock and Snow’. The position was described as pulling on either side of the off width like pulling elevator doors open. So Magnus was pretty much on point with his guess. It was a guy named Gaston.

@@greenmattt Haha I'm French and everytime I watch Magnus videos at his home gym and see him warming up on a "7B" I'm like "come on man this is a blue at best here". In France, my kids, who are in junior high school and high school, do climbing as part of their allocated sport hours. It's one of the couple of disciplines they will do throughout the year. This was definitively not the case when I was a kid. Not sure how widespread it is but it is obvious that pretty much every school sport hall has a climbing wall now.

I think it's more complicated than that, maybe France has a good background when it comes to climning, but for me those who have the chance to experience it from a young age, it's not specifically from school. For a good part, yes we have the chance to practice climbing during our school years (for those who have it for the longest time it is during college / lycée which I think is equivalent to secondary school, but even this long was rare a few years ago). But unfortunatley in a way those years will make a lot of people afraid of it: it's an obligation, it's for the grades, teachers most often do not really like it and are not interested by this sport. For example I had it as part of my allocated sport hours only from when I was like 15 to 17-18, and I know that most of my friendss didn't really liked it / were afraid of it. So we do not have the chance to practice it from a young age as I see it / experienced it during my scholarity. Maybe it's just that this sport is really becoming more and more populair in France since a few years, and we have some good climbing / bouldering gyms. But for the few years that I practiced it during my scholarity, it was far from being one of the most popular sports (even most for bouldering which I never saw during those years). When it comes to extracurricular activities, maybe we have more opportunities than others, I couldn't tell. But even then, you need to get the chance to try it and have people push you toward this sport.

@OneDreams54

@@elie8194 Depends on the Gyms. Arkose and Climb-Up (And by extension MROC in Lyon) are present on "Social Boulder", you can see the Boulders and routes on it, and they try to display the difficulty a bit more precisely than just colors, even if not always accurate and not always put into "regular" grades. Climbing district in Paris has QR-codes below each boulder that leads to youtube videos of the betas. So, it looks like climbing gyms are trying more and more to develop their 'connected' side.

Like it's on thing to use that difficult of holds when all your hands and feet are in the right position, but it's another entirely to do it on reflex and out of position.

In terms of boulders, I think there are others gyms that have more problems. Climb-Up Aubervilliers has about 16~18 boulders per color, with 7 colors. The Arkose Nation Gym has 24+ boulders of each color with 6 colors. Where Climb-Up Aubervilliers really shines, it's with the rope-climbing, with the highest count of all gyms in Paris (I think) It is with both together, that it becomes the biggest gym.

Climb Up Porte d'Italie has the biggest amount of boulder problems, and a spray wall with a 45 degrees incline.

@@xigoute4173 "Y'a rien a arkose nation par rapport à Aubervilliers" --> Juste 45 blocs de plus ? Même si les codes couleurs sont différents. (Only 45 more boulders ? Even if color codes are different.) Comme quelqu'un d'autre l'a dit, le plus important, ça serait Climb'Up Porte d'Italie en terme de Bloc. Avec un Total de plus de 250. (As someone else said, the biggest for boulders would be Climb'Up Porte d'Italie. With a total over 250.) Pour revenir à Aubervillier et Nation : (To go back to Aubervillier and Nation :) Climb'Up Aubervilliers : 105 blocs au total. - 14 Jaunes (Yellow) - 14 Verts (Green) - 16 Bleus (Blue) - 18 Violets (Purple) - 16 Rouges (Red) - 16 Blancs (White) - 8 Noirs (Black) Arkose Nation : 150 Blocs total. (The only reason Aubervilliers is bigger, would be thanks to the Rope-climbing routes.)

@@aminebarnat6528 Thanks for the information, I'll go take a look myself. Looks like with 250+ it's indeed impressive for boulder problems.

You need to do a collab with Storror. It feels like a natural progression at this point. Get them to find you a really basic roof gap. Pete and Toby are practically bros right now, we can make it happen!

Yes there is a strong French guy called Gaston and he's a character in beauty and the beast 😂 I've been wondering for years whether that's where the term comes from. He does flex his muscles a lot in that way.
