That’s a fantastic film camera to use. I truly love the character some older glass provides. Also I find the slower process of shooting film is really relaxing for me. I still won’t stop shooting digitally mainly but I find myself reaching for my film camera gear on vacations these days

The Konica C35 is a very capable film camera! One with a working meter is most preferable. I always grab this when I want to be discreet on the streets or just not draw attention. The slight 'shift' you are seeing in your images is a rangefinder parallax effect. You are not actually composing through the lens but through another window slightly off center of the lens. Some cameras can correct for it. Cropping in post is typical. Great images, have fun shooting film!!

I enjoy doing film photography at least occasionally. I have two Minoltas that work great, but you are right; the cost is quite prohibitive (but maybe not that much worse than buying huge expensive lenses for the dslrs or mirrorless. Anyway, great shots and fun video.
@rogiervanoostrom64672 жыл бұрын
Nice video! I really like the photos you took. It was very fun to see your excitement of going through the roll, at one moment knowing there are only few frames left (so then taking photos a bit more cautiously). Then, when the roll is actually through, waiting for development and print... The excitement of going through the actual prints for the first time is just golden. I got into film photography for kind of these reasons. I like digital a lot, it liberates the photographer, but there is also value in going through 'the process' that involves film. For film I do mainly b&w and I do my own development and scanning. Apart from the initial investment, that puts the cost down a bit. Also I think for b&w, the film medium is really different from digital, and not easily emulated in terms how the b&w film behaves in terms of contrast when over/underexposed, and how it interacts with the developer, especially when pushing and pulling. The resulting grain, sharpness, acutance and contrast curves are an art form in itself. Well, that's just my opinion ;-) Oh yes, one thing that is important: older rangefinders, like the Minolta you used, often have excellent lenses... That same lens in the €15,- second hand Minolta, but then new, would cost you soo much more. That's actually a good thing of film photography: there is affordable gear if you know how to choose wisely!
@youtubeaccount245692 жыл бұрын
none of this shots have the hdr, the sharpness, lvl of detail, everything that we all want and have on our smartphones ... but somehow i like them much more than the ones on smartphones ... that bit of graininess ... the lens flare... makes them so alive, like you can touch everything that`s in that photo, so immersive

The off centre thing is parallax, it’s a rangefinder camera with the viewfinder off to one side. You’re looking through that and not through the lens. Love the pic of the kid!

It is a good little camera, with quirks people today are not used to. I have a little Rollei of a very similar design, maybe a little older. You were haveing difficulty with crispness of focus, this camera is perfectly capable of very crisp focus. If you are setting infinity by feel then once there, I think you were mostly there anyway, then you need to visually and manually just come back a tiny bit to get that crispness. After a little it becomes habitual. I have quite a few analogue cameras, processing film here in the U.K. is crazy expensive so I haven’t used them in ages, but I love the very documentary style you get from them, very undistorted, and great too for high contrast and if you were developing your own negatives, especially b&w just fantastic for playing around with in a real darkroom and pulling out exactly what you want for an image. You have made me quite nostalgic for the days when I could and also for an era of photography now gone. You can get the light leak fixed very easily, I suspect there is very little wrong with the actual camera, but as it is so old the foam that makes the back light proof has perished. It is an easy fix and the camera itself is small and neat and worth keeping. It worked fabulously with all the architectural detail, couldn’t see much distortion of those very geometrical tall buildings at all. We did not have the luxury of digital editing back then so the lenses were really rather nice.

Hi Pierre, The images are a bit off center because of the viewfinder, you're not looking through the lens, and I don't know if the C35 is parallax corrected, meaning that the viewfinder is slightly off center with the lens, close up this effect gets more apparent.

Film photography since the 1960s, developing my own film (when I can) since 1970. In the thumbnail I thought that was a Canonet -- of which I have two, and they're excellent. Those compact rangefinder cameras from the 1960s and 1970s pretty much all had good lenses. I've also got a Petri 7s, which is less compact, but equally good.

You need an SLR camera (single-lens reflex) with TTL metering (through the lens). Once you have that then your photos will look the way you expect them to. Currently you’re using a rangefinder camera so you have the parallax error (means what you see is not what you get). Since you can buy cameras used for less than $100 today that cost $1000+ in my day, like my trusty Canon A1, you need to choose your brand carefully because you need to buy lenses that will fit (usually made by same manufacturer). You’ll also want some filters to screw onto the lenses. The real fun comes when you develop and print your own photos. We do a lot of cropping in the dark room when we decide which parts of the photo to print. I never did learn to develop & print colour film - only B&W but that’s plenty to get a feel for it. Was a bit funny to see you learning how to put film in a camera! Things people my age take for granted.

Great video, thanks! That Konica looks a lot like a little Olympus rangefinder I used to use 25-ish years ago to shoot street scenes, usually using some grainy, fast-ISO b&w film. You got some great pics out of it, despite the uninspiring choice of film. I’m sure you have your own opinions, and other will have said so already, but that persistent light leak issue suggests to me that there’s a problem with the seal around the back of the camera (worth inspecting). And on some shots you look like you have part of the previous/next shot at the side, suggesting that you weren’t winding the film on fully to the next frame. Nice job, though. Made me nostalgic! 😊

10:49 image was off center. The camera's viewfinder is not centered over the lens, hence the slightly off center foreground subject (parallax error). Most of these cameras have a set of marks in the viewfinder to account for this, IF you knew what you were looking for. Those who grew up on digital cameras will find this disconcerting since they never have to deal with this.

You have an orange streak along the left hand edge of many of the prints. At first I thought it might just be the first image where the film had not been wound on far enough prior to the first photo. When more prints suffered I thought that the camera might be leaking light along an edge, but half of the images are not affected. Is it a printing issue? is the streak visible on the negs?
