The firmware update issue has pushed me to the edge. I’ve been selling off all my Sony gear little by little because they continue to treat the a1 like it’s an a6100. When I buy a flagship camera I expect flagship level of support. Not to be forgotten as soon as my transaction is complete. I’m down to my last 2 sony lenses. Sonys time is running out in my kit.

I have been an A7III user for four years, and recently acquired a second body to make my work a little easier. I contemplated upgrading, but for what I do the A7III is perfectly fine. I guess ignorance is bliss, because I don't know how much better the viewfinder or LCD is on newer models, nor do I know how much better is the real-time tracking AF. I do find the menus clunky, and while I know I could customize to my liking, I haven't done so. I mean I am used to using the menus, but I do forget where things are sometimes.

I'm using the Canon R6 with mostly EF-mount lenses. Thanks to the huge second-hand market I was able to get 7 L lenses in less than 3 years - something I thought wasn't going to happen just a couple of years ago. There's a lot to enjoy using high end gear from the past. I took the quite unknown 20-35mm 2.8L and the 85 1.2L II with me on vacation to Tokyo and I'm delighted with what they produced. Now I even managed to complete the first "holy trinity" of EF lenses: 20-35 2.8; 28-80 2.8-4 and 80-200 2.8 :-) IBIS and the focusing abilities extract so much more from these old lenses.

I as a former a6500 user and now a7 IV user, I would like to add a few more things. Pros: - You can get incredibly detailed sharp photos and videos, especially the results of the higher megapixel count of the a7 IV really impressed me. I often find myself dialing back the sharpness in camera because it’s looking a bit too digital and unnatural - I really like the form factor of the cameras. Their size and weight never got in my way - switching between video and photo feels really comfortable on the a7 IV - S-Cinetone and Slog 3 are great for video - the full size HDMI-port comes in handy. This makes it so much easier to connect the camera to monitors or external recorders. This makes it much more usable for video work and creates a better hybrid camera package. - af tracking even with third party lenses works very well Cons: - Overheating issues for filming even in winter after only 30 minutes! (doesn’t happen too often but be careful in direct warm sunlight. Even when not recording it can get really warm very quickly) - I don’t like the screen, but the viewfinder also isn’t that great. It’s useful and decent but especially the viewfinder of the a7 IV looks a little blocky to me almost as if you can see the individual pixels. It’s not as “punchy”, detailed and life-like as I expected it to be - the IBIS could be better and more intelligent - the menu is still a bit confusing and not very intuitive - the color science improved but sometimes is a bit off, especially skin tones and yellow tones in particular. It’s not a huge let down but for 2800€ camera from late 2021 I expect more. Also because this has been criticized for years now and other brands are much better than sony in this regard. - annoying limitations to protect their higher end cameras (reasonable from a marketing standpoint but still annoying) Also worth mentioning: - imo the focus depth map is a bit overhyped. It’s impressive and surely useful for some scenarios and people but focus peaking is still the best allrounder for that use case (both photo and video). The focus depth map often blocks most of your frame with the colors and #2 most of the time I think it’s more important to find critical focus than seeing where your focus plane is at the moment. - some software developers were/are really slow to make their software compatible with some of the RAW compression types

For overheating in videos, was it at 4k30? Or were you shooting longform 4k60p?
@theowlfromduolingo7982
@theowlfromduolingo7982 Жыл бұрын
@@professionalpotato4764 No it was connected to my Ninja V and it was 4k/25fps. Overheating happened only twice but I thought it was worth sharing. In the menu there is also a setting that allows you to film longer even when the camera is getting too warm. But still, for a hybrid camera I was a little annoyed that this is still an issue

Since the launch of A7iii and the introduction of third-party zooms like Tamron 28-75, Sony has gradually become a reliable brand for working professionals in both stills and video. However, it has also become less fun to use (e.g. mediocre screen and IBIS), less value-friendly (e.g. a7IV compared to a7III, expensive flagship A1 without many firmware updates), and less well-rounded (more segmentation of product line).

Torrential rain had come and gone by the time I relised where I left these 2 cameras. Im still impressed to see these cameras still running today, with what I put them through. All your points were great. You should be able to update the file naming scheme to differentiate files between cameras. That should help reduce the chance you accidentally delete images when you have a day of heavy shooting. I do this on my older Sony a7ii and a6k. Hope that helps. Good luck!

have both A7iii and A6600. Love almost everything about both. Firmware upgrades would be nice... willing to pay for it rather than buying new cameras. That said i have never faced a situation where either camera couldn't do the job other than one thing: trying to get low in a vertical (portrait) orientation with the old style tilt only screen is a huge pain.

As a Chicagoan, I recognize so many of the scenes in this video. Good work. As for the cosmetic wear on the bodies, I like it. I'm a long-time news photographer and an old black Nikon 35mm camera with brassing in all the right spots is such a great look, a gently worn patina that is never seen on a plastic or rubberized body. But I understand what you mean about it affecting resale value especially on short-lived digital bodies where you use them very quickly and need to sell in order to move on to a new model.

Hi Pierre, The Pros outway the Cons with Sony, Image quality is so important, video quality is also important. Auto Focus is very important, and being able to use third Party lenses, good on you Sony. I like when you said, a camera system won't change how you shoot, and what happens in your brain is more important than what happens with your camera. So true, thanks for sharing this video.

I've been shooting Sony since 2021(Sony A1) and I agree on the weather sealing, when I shot in colorado and it was snowing a lot, so much water got on my lens and it was just fine. Also went to egypt and in general the air was quite dusty yet nothing really got into the camera which was amazing. Also I agree, the sony zoom lenses are amazing, in fact I have lenses from 12-600mm, covering literally any need. Also yea software updates, very frustrating, especially given how the features not being added is purely business and not hardware limitations. Oh yea and one more thing, sony really does honor their warranty as my Sony A1 shutter broke within a year and they fixed it no questions asked for free, so I would say that is also a plus. And one last issue is that sometimes some dust might get into the tiny cracks of the seals, doesn't get in but just barely stuck which is a bit annoying.

Hi Pierre, I‘m a Sony user since 2014 with the first a7r. I came from Nikon (D800/D810) and the reasons for switching were: compact size, image quality and the good AF in photo AND video mode. In the meantime I own the a1 (not having a firmware update is desaster compared to Canon), the A7r V, which is the real flagship in terms of image quality and the ZV-E1, which is a very good value for money when it comes to professional videos. Beside the cameras I hate Sony‘s process to become a member of their PRO Team, they don’t trust their professional customers. I’ve never seen such a customer unfriendly process.

A1 user. I'm happy with mine. It does everything in a small and inconspicuous package. I use the 35GM, 50GM and 85 DG DN for people and general photography. I can not think of a single issue when considering the quality of the system and it's size and weight. Firmware updates don't bother me, I bought the A1 for what it did. System / New camera envy makes no sense to me. I'm hard on my cameras and the A1 has been used in rain, swamps and been dropped. Hasn't skipped a beat.

I've been following you since I started photography with a Sony A6000 a year ago. I enjoyed the process of shooting, but I was always looking for new hardware and trying to capture and edit the perfect picture. Somehow that didn't make me happy. After I tested Fujifilm for the first time, the passion for photography really came back to me. The manual handling and the great jpgs out of camera have reduced my editing to a minimum and now I enjoy the process of taking pictures all the more.

I have been shooting Fuji since 2016 and was pretty happy with my XT1 then XT2. But I got bored at some point and needed a change. For hybrid shooting, the dials are not great to be honnest. Beyond that, I think we sometimes need changes to keep the passion alive. I’m now pretty happy with my A7R5 although I’ve only had it for a couple of months. Happy shooting with your Fuji. I took my best pictures ever on them. Passion is what makes good pictures not the camera. 😊

I have an A7RIII. My main pro is the customisability of them. Those function buttons C1, C2 etc are so useful and pretty much all I use the menus for is to format the memory card. I’ve used a few other makes of camera and nothing comes close to that customisability. My main con is the stupid grip and how close it is to the lens on anything bigger than a small prime. Fed up of getting knuckle ache (and I have small hands) after a day of walking round with the camera in my hand. They need to make the body a little bit bigger and improve the feel of the grip.

Great video and you hit the positives and negatives spot on. As a 35-year pro shooter who recently switched (mostly) to Sony, I feel both your elation (auto-focus) and your pain (firmware, back screens, etc.). And while I love the capabilities of Sony, compared to my former high-end DSLR system's build quality, ergonomics, screen quality, and oh that optical viewfinder, Sony cameras feel like toys. And yes, I know I am comparing apples to oranges, and I'm committed to Sony now so onward we go hoping for better engineering in the future. One thing I just don't get is the firmware thing. Spoiler alert: Hey, Sony, give us firmware updates, and guess what, we will be even more loyal and we will buy more cameras! Their strategy is just so short-sighted. And now I'll get on my favorite soap box. I can walk into my kitchen and speak to the air and a nice robot lady will tell me the weather forecast or the day's news or play classical music or help me spell chrysanthemum, but my camera cannot hear me. It is time for voice-activated menus! Today's menus are so dense that the first company that lets us change the most common settings (ISO, photo/video, focus mode, etc.) by simply speaking to our camera will rule the world. Okay, rant over.

I'm an Olympus EM1X user, and yeah I know m43 users and especially em1x users are pretty rare, but I love it. The ergonomics and IBIS are seriously impressive, and the ruggedness in my opinion is superior to Sony's or Nikon's mirrorless cameras. Olympus's pro lenses are really nice too. i just got it this year from B&H second hand for 800 dollars. I'm not a pixel peeper or obsessed over noise so micro 43rds are fine for me. Used it pretty often in heavy rain and it never had one issue. Love it.

thanks god you mention the screen issue i came from a canon t5 then i got nikon d810, i always loved how the pictures looked in the back of the screen of those cameras after that i moved to the sony a7r4 and i was surprise about the screen quality its like the screen doesnt have enough dynamic range that makes an issue when it comes to get perfect exposure cuz sometimes highlights look blown out but the arent so i have to be looking throught the view finder to make sure its correctly exposed and thats really disappointing.

ive been blessed to be able to buy into multiple camera systems. Nikon z6ii was my first, loved everything about it besides the auto focus, they have the high pixel screens, and some of the best 1.8 lenses ive ever used... but then the Sony a74 came out, and when I was buying a Nikon I said to myself, I wish there was a new Sony camera, because the a73 feels dated to me. had the Nikon for a year and then switched. Sony was the best camera ive ever used, but something about it felt uninsipiring hah, I don't know, maybe screen resolution, idk, but I still have it and it's my work horse, buying GM 2.8 zooms for $1000-$1500 is nuts to me and helped me get so many dream lenses. 2 months ago, I couldn't help myself, I felt like I was shooting less for fun, so I was like.. Ima buy an Canon r5... yeah I know, but I wanted to see if the extra evf resolution, and other things were worth it.... I love that camera but the main issue for canon is the lenses... Compared to Sony, canon's lens tech is from the stone ages man... and I hate it! haha barely any lens has linear motors, and even when they do the front element still moves, and its noisy. 50 1.2 is way worse then Sonys, the 1.8 primes are sooo slow. Like for example Sony people say that the 50 1.8 is a bad lens, well if you were on canon most of your lenses would preform, autofocus wise, just like that lens haha. It's crazy to me! because how does their eye tracking use such slow lenses??? hahah any ways, Sony has everyone beat if they just used better quality screens, and in my opinion, their zoom lens design is ugly, but they corrected it with the 24-70 mark 2 so that's good. Also the auto focus modes in Sony are so great, one thing that people say about canon is that you can switch the eyes your focusing on with the joystick, what they don't tell you is that's only possible in complete automode... no other af point just letting the camera do everything... which is only good in studio work honestly. Sorry for the long comment but I wanted to share my experience as a young professional photographer that is trying to find the best camera for me. Great video!

The A1 is my absolute favourite Sony camera, however, the firmware scenario hits me hard. So much can be done with the internal processor, yet it's sat not being used to its full potential. I'm not expecting AI or anything of the sort but I would like to see stuff that we have in the A9II which is Micro AF Adjustments... the A1 is so so so capable yet hampered by the software. I've been using my Canon 600D for a long time and now that it's starting to show its age through its performance, I have been thinking about switching to Sony. Particularly either an A7III or A7IV, as one of my acquaintances who is more experienced and a lot deeper into the field once told me that the industry here in our country has somewhat of a preferences when it comes to Sony, thus it's potentially easier to get accepted into a company if one may choose to do so. I have also worked on different events previously and a lot of the other photographers and videographers I worked with used Sony too. Another thing he mentioned was how accessible third party lenses were if one has a Sony body and can also aid in saving a bit more money just for the alternatives. I want to continue using my Canon 600D until it breaks and can no longer shoot, but the focusing has gotten much more sloppy as of recent and I'm concerned about how it might affect future projects too.

Played with Sony A74 and A73 for about 18 months combined while shooting with Canon as my main gear for the last 20 years. Because I do video and photo for me the biggest issue was sensor dust. Often I would get sensor dust at F11 or smaller and even though I cleaned it often while traveling it was hard to see the dust on the EVF/Screen and when watching the videos I realized how much dust was seen. Photos I can clean in post but not in videos. I used the A74 for 1 year and loved it but the dust drove me crazy. Something I never had to worry about on my R5 and R6Mk2. I would love to try Nikon Z8 along side my Canon. Never had as Nikon but I did have FF and APSC Sony and Panasonic in the past.

Oooh, I haven't heard about this dust issue. That would annoy the hell out of me. I really want to go the Canon route, but they lack midrange priced lenses. If they had a nice 50mm f/1.4 at the $1200 range, like the new SONY GM, I'd get the Canon. Yeah, I could get a used 50mm EF 1.2L, but for $900 on the used market, the chromatic aberrations on that lens are crazy and it's not sharp by modern standards.

All good points especially the grip and menu. I find the build quality suspect. I'm still using the A7RII (picked up used batteries cheap!) and had the shutter go bad at 35,000 actuations. This from a camera that cost $2,700 at the time is not except-able.

all the lens I had were amazing from them, except the kit 28-70 :), however, I sold them for being too cynical, clinical performance and 2d, when I used some old ones with Zeiss design, or even the Batis series, they are not the best in sharpness, chromatic aberration, vignette, but they capture something that cannot be measured and expressed, the 55mm f1.8, the 85 f2, the 40 f2, and even some classic lens from Zeiss : Pancolar 50mm f1.8 and Sonnar 200 f2.8... the most loved and liked photos are with them, in the photo exhibitions i applied only Zeiss photos were selected from my portfolio to be printed and exposed, especially the old manual focus adapted ones, you think it would be a coincidence, I thought about it long and I think it's not.

I just purchased a Nikon Z8 with the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm F/1.8 S prime lenses. I have a question for you all though. Image Quality being my top priority, which lens should I get between the 24- 120mm F/4S and the 28- 75mm F/2.8 'Nikon' non S lens for everyday usability.

Another great video Pierre!! I've been using sony(a7iv) for about 2 months, prev i had a nikon, yeah the autofocus its on top yeah the lenses etc but man the monitor why it has to be so bad? Why a company like sony that builds phones, TVs, monitors can have so bad monitors on the a7 models ? Why a a7iv cant have a monitor like a7Riv , i cant understand it. Otherwise, I'm very pleased.

Not just firmware, they need to maintain their phone apps. My A7R5 worked really well with their app until iOS upgraded and now the connection for GPS drops if the camera turns off when the app is in the background or the phone screen is off. It doesn’t reconnect when you turn the camera back on. Several others reported the same on dpreview and it stops working after a specific iOS minor version. Sony need to update their app to work with the changes Apple make to iOS ahead of release.

I’ve been shooting Sony for 3 years coming from Fuji. The a7rv (for me) is the best release to date. But, all camera cos have pros & cons. I feel it’s the culture and industry issue and not a “Sony” issue.
@vincentmccormack3629

For me. Pros: image quality, lens choice (including canon) focus peaking, AF, smaller bodies (than Canon FF DSLR) and not much bigger than MFT. Price of hi-res bodies (compared to 5DSr). Cons: Dust. It’s as bad early DSLRs, a problem I thought was behind me when I was used the 6D and E-M5. Battery life on A7rii. Note that a comparison against newer Canon, Nikon kit would be different.

I am sony user from their dslr to nex5 to a7rii for 7 years until last year i got the new a7rv. I like Sony camera for their size and glass. The af zeiss glasses are great and then now the GM lenses are very good too. Price of Sony gear in my country are also alot cheaper than Nikon and Canon hence all the more I’m sticking to the brand. Also the GM lenses are usually smaller and lighter compare to equiv Canon and Nikon lenses. About the con. Yea. I have been saying since day 1. Sony camera lcd screen is always on the lower res compare to the market. The A1 only has 1mil dot while a7rv only has 1.44mil dots. On another hand the Canon and Nikon has lcd screen over 2mil dot or 3mil dot. I shoot via lcd screen alot so I would apperciate a better screen. The evf is fine tho. 9mill dots for a1/a7rv.

@@theyear1500 yea I must be sleepy. I got the number all wrong. A1 is 1.44. A7rv is 2mil. The a7iv is 900k+ But my point remain. I hope Sony camera lcd screen can be better/high res.

I also think so, why did Sony limit their first mission to provide a camera with update features but my Sony A7r4 camera has only been updated once for years, such as the menu display, 4k 60p, the choice of raw file size in 7r5, in my opinion it can be provided just with software update. so why sony?

I still use the A7 III for my everyday work - making videos for my KZbin channels and stills for clients, and for my social media. I think of making a vid soon "Does the A7III still worth it in 2023" :) There are some things that I do not like about it: - The screen is crap - The EV is not good - No 4K60 And good things: - Great 4K30 footage - Plenty of picture profiles to work with (LOG,cine etc..) - Great variety of lenses to go for - Great low-light performance - Great battery life - Good autofocus

I switched to Sony in March after 20 years shooting with Canon. I like Sony's focus peaking for manual focus lenses, its better then Canon mirrorless. I also like the feel of my A7 IV, I know who likes Sony grips right? Overall I like Sony except finding used lenses for this thing, GOOD LUCK! They are 25% more then Canon RF lenses used AND they sell immediately because of the lack of supply.

The firmware and inconsistent issues seems to be industry wide, even on Fuji that does get updates going from XT3 to XS20 there are annoying different options appearing in different part of the menu, things like one shows your auto ISO value the other doesn’t. Sony should fix it but they are not alone. The firmwares never give you real functionality either, just bug fixes. Sure we got a new app on Fuji that is absolutely woeful, you try to use it as a camera monitor and as soon as it connects it turns off your HDMI, LCD and all camera controls like focus to give you a tiny preview in portrait only, what gives Fuji!!
