Matt, I am in my mid 70’s, have had some health issues. I cannot hit the ball as far as I used to. I have been playing from the forward tee’s this year. I have also started making tees in the fairway. I try to hit from 240 to 270. I have started hitting 3 woods and 5 woods off the tee. If I start from the fairway I do not hit a driver. My short game has improved I now have to work on putting. I have shot 68 three times. I am usually am one or two strokes around par 72. I am so ready to go play golf every day now. It is so much fun to see how low I can go. I can play 18 holes in 2.5 hours. I was playing with a group on a Wednesday, I explained how I was going to play. At the turn everyone was hitting from my tees and my partner and I took the other guys by 5 strokes. We had so much fun on the back 9, if you want a real challenge play from the family tees with no woods or long irons. It is not as easy as everyone says it is.

I love this series. I've done this a few times recently at my home course, especially on the back nine. That back nine has kicked my butt for years, but I decided to try to change the story. Playing from the forward tees has given me a chance to feel what it's like to have a good look at birdie on a bunch of holes that I am usually fighting to make bogey. The brain just remembers, "oh, we've played well on this hole before. You've made birdie here!" It tends to skip over the fact you played well from the forward tees. After just a couple times playing from the reds, my scores are now consistently 3-5 strokes better on that nine while playing from my usual tees.

Matt, continue the series. It just goes to show how us amateurs could play better rather than spending more time at the driving range, it’s a hell of a lot more fun. We all have our better days. I play the senior tees (72 yr) because to play more wedges. So when I play from the regular tees I’m more prepared but requires hitting more mid irons.

Great timing on this video! Myself and a buddy and his son played Saturday. His son has gotten the golf bug and hit the range, but never the course. Saturday was the first. So, we played from the forward tees. Great experience for him and for us! Had a LOT of fun and totally changed the course for us. Love the video and I LOVE that you show it like it is. Street Cred: 1000XP!

I've never played from the forward tees, but about a month ago I played from the tips (one tee further back than my normal tees) with a buddy of mine and shot 3 under my normal handicap. This showed me that my wedge game needed some major work. Since then I've improved my handicap and hoping next year I get closer to shooting par! Love the content Matt!

I have always wanted to try this at my home course. Couple of weeks ago I was paired up with a couple of old dudes who were playing the forward tees. We decided to join them to see what would happen. I've always worried it would backfire. I shot a 66 on a par 71. It was a great experience. Not sure I could do that every time, but I highly recommend it. Great work Matt. Enjoyed the content.

I took personal encouragement from your "lesson". I'm 80 years old and golf twice a week. My ego kept me from using the 'senior' tees until a couple of months ago and now getting better scores (low 80s) because my short game has improved so much. From the white (standard) tees yesterday shot my age! Love your channel because it helps me so much.

Keep it up brother. Loved seeing you fight back. Not everyday is going to be your best day, but you if you can scramble anytime you’re out, that’s the mark of a great player. Also, just goes to show every shot-whether a 54 or 8i or 4i in-still has to be so precise to avoid needing an up and down. Maybe pick your favorite yardage with a wedge when you’re on the tee?

Love this please do more of them I’d like to commend you on staying positive and keeping the “alright counter” Todays play made me realize the importance of “scouting the course” before playing it. If I have never played a set of tees (or course) before, I scout it on V1 to see target lines and distances to see how I should setup my bag and also prepare me for how I’d like to play on the course. I’m surprised you decided to hit several different shot types off the tee when you even acknowledged you were hitting it the best. Seemed like one of those “hit the shot shape you’re comfortable with” rather than staying aggressive when you didn’t have your A game. Just the thoughts long time sub who has benefitted from your channel

I've never tried to move up to the the ladies tees to play. If I was a member somewhere and had all the time in the world to practice from there I would. But I'm not gonna pay 75 bucks to play the front tees. But I have played the next tees 30 to 50 yds back from the ladies and its no picnic. You can't just bomb and gouge for birdies. So many hazards come into play that you wouldn't reach farther back. I actually score better or the same farther back to the tees before the the tips than I do at the front. It's a tricky adjustment for sure.

It is so funny you are going this because, they are aerating our greens tomorrow (Reunion CC, about 30 miles from you) and we are playing on Thursday. We know the greens will be bumpy so we all decided to play the forward tees for the heck of it to see if we can go low. What a coincidence.

This should prove to some of the idiots who insist on playing the back tees even though they can barely break 90 or 100 back there that the front tees are not the pushover they think. Most players should move up at least one tee. They'd have more fun and rounds would be shorter.

I always struggled with nerves in the past on the last few holes when I was under par. However, at the beginning of 2022, I started playing the forward tees occasionally. This got me used to going low, and holding it together, late in my round. Well…. Last fall I shot my PR -7(65). And this summer shot a -5(67), from my normal tee boxes. I sorta discovered this on my own, and it’s been a HUGE payoff. In a way, playing the forward tees puts MORE pressure on you. You have to hit driver perfectly, because you’re hitting it past the fat part of the fairway. You also feel the pressure to stick those half wedge shots close. I honestly think the biggest thing is you’ll have more “makeable” birdie putts, on almost every hole. You’re gonna need a lot of one-putts, or you still won’t go low.

Awesome video. I’ve been planning to do this same thing myself soon. My career low is +1 and I want to do the “4 tee box” challenge/shoot par from the forward and then move back. That said, are we sure that being super aggressive is the way to break 60? I understand the idea of putting pressure on tee shots and spotlighting short game. However, to go as low as possible, why would the strategy change from tips to forward? Seems like the name of the series and what you’re doing are in opposition just a bit. All that said, love the video and can’t wait to watch the rest of the series. 👍🏻

We played the forward tees today. Greens were aerated so didn't make any putts beyond 6 feet, but shot 2 under (5 index, so shooting 70 is a good 7-8 shots better than my average score). Par 5s were more reachable (I'm 60, so I am not as long as I used to be) and hit a lot of 8-9-PW instead of 5-6-7 irons into greens. We will be doing it again in a few weeks.

Great video & fantastic idea for a series. I suspect us mid & high handicappers will gain much more from this as we will be less focussed on smashing driver & much more focussed on the short game. I understand why you chose to use a driver most of the time as you are a pro. Us hackers play too many long iron & hybrid shots & don’t get enough practice with short irons & chips. Will definitely try forward tees next time. It would be nice to have par & birdie putts rather than bogeys & doubles 😅
