This is why no one wants to build anything in 2022.
Despite careful planning and preparation, obstacles have arisen...

MORE ABOUT ME
I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable."
I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break and build the things I need.
8 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
My goal is to learn and share traditional techniques and skills while showing my peers how to get from where they are to where they want to go, how to do the things they are passionate about, and what can be done TODAY to engage their own community and grow deep roots.
Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, restoring my antique truck or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support - whether financially through Patreon, through shopping my affiliate links, through buying merchandise, plans or project videos, or even just liking, commenting, and sharing my content with others helps me GREATLY to keep producing quality content to share.

You should never feel ashamed to ask for help when you need it. I believe in giving others the opportunity to receive blessings of helping others. One thing to remember is we are all flawed and imperfect. I, in my life love helping people in need. I tend to get as much out of it as the people I help. It’s not an admittance of failure to ask for help, it’s realizing your limits and being strong enough to ask for that help.

Girl... failure isn't shameful. Failure is the best way to learn. It's the fastest way to grow. If you're afraid to fail, you're holding yourself back. Failures should be celebrated and shared to help others learn with you. It IS hard to ask for help, though. I learned the same lesson you did that DIY often means it'll cost significantly more than if you hired a pro. Knowing your limits is an ongoing challenge. I'm glad you put out this video because I have been thinking about your last one for a while and wondering how you're doing. I'm glad your community has stepped up to show you that you're not alone and that they've got your back.

Nothing to be ashamed of. I didn't take on any thing as big as your project. Just a major extension doubling the size of my house. I estimated it would take 6 months start to finished. It took 2 years. Most of that was fighting to get council approval. in the end I probably knew planning and construction standards better than the roadblock who had to give approval. The actual build took 6 months including the inevitable delays scheduling trades on site and weather problems plus the fact I did most of the work myself with the help of family. Dig in and keep going. You'll get there.

When you ask for help you’re giving someone else the opportunity to do something that makes them feel helpful, feel included and possibly saving their life. Yes there are people that are that depressed when you ask them for help you are helping them. This school has taught you many things… so in a way.. it opened when it broke ground. Hell it opened when it became an idea in your head and I can’t think of any better way to start than with a wedding. A ceremony for the community and friends to come together to support a couple that want to help each other grow. This will be awesome no matter what? Stay tough little one!!!

Even though you couldn’t just do it yourself (which I feel is not reality) you had to take a step back and ask for help. This is life and I feel this is how lessons are taught. I watch two different boat builders of wooden boats and they wanted to build these boats and found out help was the most valuable commodity for the project. You have taught more than you think. Keep with it the classes will come and at that time it will mean so much more. God bless.

I will plan to be here in that nine days, never a problem. Anne, one of mankind's great charms is his of her lack of perfection, that not even the best of us could not be better tomorrow than today. You never stop reaching for your better switch- rather you seem to draw it out of others. Hold your tears for what will be, what you and those close to you will have brought to be. And if it isn't quite what you first saw it as, well, it too can be improved! Tomorrow! FR

I am feeling your pain. I lost a lot due to the pandemic and the hits keep coming 4 years later. I almost wish I could have seen what the results would have looked like if it hadn’t of happened so I could feel a little justified that I made sound decisions, but never did I factor in the world wide pandemic and the chaos after. Your honesty about the failure is what allows those around you to see the very real and human side of setting big goals and not always having a paved, easy path reaching those goals. It allows us, your viewers, to realize our own dreams in life while being real about sometimes having to face defeat but also being mindful that we will rise up again no matter how long or how many tries it takes. Next time I'm feeling down about a goal I'm not accomplishing when or how I set out to, I'm going to remind myself, look what Anne did. If she can do that, I can do this 💪

I had a very similar conversation with my own daughter not long ago. She’s the same age you are. She was (and still is) facing many of the challenges you’re up to your eyebrows in, albeit in a quite different context. The takeaways from that conversation apply equally: 1. You’re NOT superhuman 2. You ARE human 3. That’s enough Coincidentally, I’m currently rewatching one of my favourite sci-fi series - The Expanse… Okay, fine, binge-watching… sheesh! Anyway, one of the best lines in the whole series is this: “The more you share, the more your bowl will be plentiful.” Keeping sharing, and we’ll keep that bowl filled.

Hey gorgeous human! The fact is, *not* showing or talking about the tough and the rough bits also just passes that sense of failure along to those of us who will inevitably fail when we’re inspired to follow in your footsteps. Mistakes and hurdles are great learning tools, no need to gloss over them. Of course starting a new life on a brand new farm is hard (even without all the extra work you’ve given yourself!), but if you don’t talk about the struggles you’re only telling half the story and you’re selling a fantasy. Anne, you’ve taken on a shite-load, but it’s that over-exuberance that will get the job done! Even if it ends up looking different to what you originally imagined. Besides, we’ve all learned by now that things change. Sending positive vibes and gratitude from 10,000 miles away 😊❤️

Self reliance is misunderstood, yes you rely on yourself, but you also rely on yourself to ask for help when needed. Human civilization was built on community and cooperation (even though it doesn't feel like we cooperate much). No one can know everything or have all the skills, the key is to know your limits and then ask for help when you need it. Glad to see all of the support you have gotten.

We are so far from controlling just the weather, why do we believe we can control everything in our lives. You CAN control how you interact with others. Showing the courage to ask for help, to say “I don’t know,” and the humility to say, “I may have been wrong,” is what opens us up to the generosity and kindness of others. Your school is already a huge success in that you have learned so much. I look forward to the day I can take a class from you and your maker circle at your facility and bring a group of good friends with me. Chin up! In Tennessee you never want to use the word school, learning or teaching when building an organization or business. I live in TN. and my organization wanted to use a building for Vet students learning experiences. You will meet so many obstacles it will be hard to recover. What will be easier would be set up a co-op. Just like the homeschool classes for children, have classes or blogs on-line people can sign up for and use the building as a meeting place people can practice the skills they have learned. Basically, take the school out of the school. Look into how homeschooled co-ops are run and do the same thing. A friend of mine opened her own school in and old outdated building, they meet every day and just go over what was online. It was never called a school. It was a co-op.

I still have the sign hanging high in my shop. "Dreams don't die, they PIVOT" Super inspired by all the hard work and dedication it's taken. Both physically, and emotionally (including all the personal "at home" stuff.}

Hey Anne... in short, you're my hero. I've watched for years but the videos about your struggles with the school and move are very meaningful to me personally. The past few years were tough for me as well and I like to say that I'm 100% on bonus time at this point. The only reason I'm here is because of love from my family, friends and God directly. Without it I wouldn't be here... I would've given up on everything. Even terrible days are a gift at this point. So thank you so much for your honesty and sense of humor.

You're an inspiration, Anne. It's our vulnerability that makes us human, but our strength in spite of it that makes us warriors

"The best laid schemes o' mice and men/ Gang aft a-gley." Translated it means, "The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry," from Robert Burns' "To A Mouse." My other favorite quote is from the movie "The Outlaw Josie Wales." It came from the character Lone Watie (played by Chief Dan George), and it is, in part, "We shall endeavor to persevere." You have to watch the movie to see the dark humor in this line, but it is still a sentiment I live by.

I think the most uplifting thing I have ever read, is the comments on the video 2 years ago. The amount of kindness shown there is almost overwhelming. You are a great inspiration, both as a crafts(wo)man and a person. Keep it up!
