A woodworking video about a whole lot more than the project... This video is brought to you by Squarespace. For a 10% discount at launch go to www.squarespace.com/anneofall...
When I started building this windsor chair, I thought it was going to be a regular woodworking shop project, with a weekly video to accompany it. I was wrong. Everything that had worked for 5 years of making videos fell apart, my mental health, my marriage, and, in the process, the chairs took a back seat.

MORE ABOUT ME
I'm Anne of All Trades. In NASHVILLE, I have a woodworking, blacksmithing and fabrication shop, a selection of furry friends, and an organic farm. Whether you've got the knowledge, tools, time or space to do the things you've always wanted to do, everything is "figureoutable."
I became "Anne of All Trades" out of necessity. With no background in farming or making things, I wanted to learn to raise my own food, fix things when they break and build the things I need.
10 years ago I got my first pet, planted my first seed and picked up my first tool.
My goal is to learn and share traditional techniques and skills while showing my peers how to get from where they are to where they want to go, how to do the things they are passionate about, and what can be done TODAY to engage their own community and grow deep roots.
Whether it's carving spoons, making my own hand tools, restoring my antique truck or growing heirloom tomatoes, the farm and workshop definitely keep me busy and support - whether financially through Patreon, through shopping my affiliate links, through buying merchandise, plans or project videos, or even just liking, commenting, and sharing my content with others helps me GREATLY to keep producing quality content to share.

We watch Anne of all trades to see Anne, not to see Anne pretending to be a caricature of Anne. Thanks for the honesty and please don’t feel pressure to pretend to be anything other than your ‘in the moment self’ for our sake ❤ you’re not alone and we’re rooting for you 💪

Just know that your openness and transparency means a lot to many people. Depression and anxiety are so prevalent today and your willingness to share your challenges gives encouragement and hope to a lot of folks watching. Based off the last few months of content, it really sounds like Adam is a freaking hero. I know things have been rough, and having him help out on the farm and the channel can't be an easy adjustment either of you. Way to go Adam, for stepping up where it matters, for hoping for a better future, being in the discomfort with Anne in solidarity and care! Anne, it's been lovely to hear you talk with such positivity about Adam and recognising his skills and contributions. Keep at it you two, you'll be okay ❤️

Never forget how amazing you are... You show the world amazing things and also take us along for the harsh reality... Life is not and will never be gum drops and lollipops and we need to stop allowing people to act like it is. You continue to show that making lemonade is the best path to success and survival. Stay passionate and keep working so hard toward your own and our own improvements as a society.

You, my dear, are an evangelist for honest, thoughtful, brutally real transparency, and introspection. I used to say I wanted to be more like you because I thought you were cool and did cool things but now I think I want to be like you because you’re human and know you’re human. And you still do cool things. I’m trying to convince my wife I need two goats and a cow.

In a world full of "perfect" influencers who are an inch deep, it's really refreshing to go through a journey with you. Everyone has trials, tribulations, and problems. Noone is free from fault or self-doubt. Tackling things head-on and taking strides to change takes real guts. You're real, which is the major reason I love and appreciate the channel and your journey. Life isnt a series of perfectly captured "instagrammable moments" I am looking forward to continuing this journey with you, come hell or high water! Very excited to see many MANY more project videos to come

Hey Anne, I had a similar project like your chair. It was a goofy mini bike that I built for an off road 100 mile mini bike race. I did the race in 2019 but the bike broke down around 60 miles in. I immediately started gathering parts to improve the bike and finish the race in 2020. WELL........ yeah, that didn't happen. In that time I seriously injured my back to the point that it was hard to walk. I was self employed and lost nearly all income by May 2020. I fell into deep depression and things got very, very dark. I thought my wife and kids would do better if I just wasn't around being "useless." I personally believe every day after Aug, 2020 is bonus time. Only love from other people and God kept me going. My mental, spiritual and physical health are all better, but never perfect. AND I STILL NEED TO DO THAT RACE! I can't begin to express how inspiring you and your channel are to me. You and Adam rock. I want to visit that school someday.

You talk about wanting to be the type of person we expect to see when we hit an Anne of All Trades Video and call that "joyful fun filled" - I'd like to say that while I certainly love your deeply joyful nature, the person I expect to see when I hit one of these videos is exactly who I see every time - you hitting a rough patch, or needing to present with different energy is never a disappointment. Obviously you don't owe your audience access to any private emotions, but I really appreciate your emotional honesty to just say "hey i'm not feeling like the happy-go-lucky Anne right now, I'm feeling like the Anne who's working through some things". I want to express both that your well-being and personal life should always come before any perceived obligation to your audience, but also that the value you're bringing to your audience is more than the light-hearted kind. Seeing you persevere through hard times, and hearing your musings as you use your projects and goals as ways to reflect on those struggles is really moving and often helps us in the audience reflect along with you about our own struggles and goals. And seeing that its OK and normal not to be a superhero all the time is important too. I'm really proud of everything you have accomplished so far, and I'm wishing truly all the best to you and your family. And on a much lighter note, those chairs and that table are GORGEOUS.

simply, build the chair. All of the joy, love, happiness, energy and satisfaction is found in the "doing". sometime the doing involves a poor measurement, misplaced cut or a sanding error. start over and build again. build the chair. and the next one.

When I was in the middle of my burnout I got sick of people saying things like getting back to the old me… I was me already. I had seen other getting back to their old me and getting burnout number 2 and 3… my goal was and is to stay me in the now and become a “me 2.0” in the future. This type of video makes me love your channel even more than I already did. Keep it up. I hope to see more of “Ann of all trades 2.0” in the future.

I've been through a hellhole myself, and for the time being I simply don't have much in my life that I *_HAVE TO_* do. It became so obvious to me just 2 days ago when my old house(1947) started a leak inside because of just a huge load of snow on top of the roof. I'm alone and don't have any harness or any of that, so I've been hesitant to go up there and removing it all. It was when the leak started to become worse, that I simply had no other choice but to act. I simply picked up a ladder and went up there and got rid of most of it, especially around the area where the leak was. It had instant results where it stopped leaking completely, and it was such a relief because I was expecting the worse of having to call the insurance company etc. As much as we need rest, it is crucial to have things we actually have to do as well. It's all about the balance, and I know I got things I just need to get into my life again that has to be done, because without opportunities life becomes rapidly worse.

We only see a glimpse of the struggles these last few years have been. It's so easy to lose confidence with the stresses/struggles/set backs you've had to deal with. It would take it's toll on anyone. Coming up on 35 years of starting my small woodworking business and lose confidence time to time. Finish those last two chairs & do whatever you can to get it back. Don't worry, it will return. Focus on the amazing accomplishments you've had & just imagine how incredible it will feel when your dreams fall into place. We all support you & wish nothing but that. I'll wear my Anne of All Trades shirt to send positive energy your way. Take care Anne!

Failure is just the first step in learning. I have done it so many times. I'm currently making a hideous lap quilt. I am trying a method using a serger instead of a sewing machine. But I'm doing it. And I've learned....my next one will be better and the next one even better. Thank you for keeping it real.... it's ok to find enjoyment in fuzzy butts and yet still be depressed or pissed at the hubby (no offense Adam of No Trades, just an example) or just plain defeated by weather or animals. You can be all those things or laughing and crying with the fur kids. "If you are going through hell, keep going." Winston Churchill

Anne, kudos to you for talking about this. you have been one of my heros for a few years now which might sound strange coming form a 71 year old grandfather of 9 grandkids.. You're my hero because I have 3 daughters and you have showed me that they are capable of anything. Ny oldest dauhter got some very nice tools from her father in law when he passed away becuse she does more woodworking than either of his two sons. My middle daughter has renovated two houses now and moved halfway across the country so she and her family could live a more self sufficient lifestyle in the country. My youngest daughter has also done a lot of home renocvtion projects and also moved halfway across country and is now living on 22 acrees witrh her husband, two sons and daughter. they too, are looking for a more self sufficient lifestle.,oh, did i mention that they are both homeschooling their three kids. I have recommended your channel to all of them for the wholesome, helpful content you provide. Keep up the good work Anne.

46 years ago I also went thru a hell realm. Changes all happened at once. It changed the direction of my life, both from where I lived to the focus of my life. I realized because of the car accident, that there was a direction one can take or at least acknowledge, which is the inner direction. That not only was life lived in the outer world, but that there was an inner path and direction that offered (from books I read) the sort of peace that is not dependent on any-thing. That knowledge came directly from that mishap. So I changed coasts and today all those years later can look back on that tragic accident, as something that happened that much good came out of. Since my life had changed so radically soon after the crash, that new direction was like I went boing- now go that way. It was like I needed a cosmic bonk on the head to get me to change directions and wake up. So I think what I am saying is that hell realms happen- life is changing all the time, and I suggest respectfully that you not judge what happened. Take time to squeeze all the juices out of all your experiences and give the nectar a bit of time to mature. Then take a small taste. It might taste good. Remember that Zen story about the farmers son who broke is leg trying to break a wild stallion. The son felt like a failure and he mopped. The next week the army showed up in his town, grabbing anyone under a certain age. They did not take the son, cause of his broken leg. What seems a disaster today, might just be a blessing in disguise. You may look back in 10-15 years and thank your lucky stars you got hit in the face with a bag of sh*t. Well well well, ya never can tell.

Honestly, I think this is just the natural path as we get older. You've been spinning a bunch of plates and keep adding plates... and that's great as long as life is smooth sailing. But you hit a bump, and plates start to fall, so you scramble to try to get those plates spinning again and that means you have to take attention away from the others. It's just a slow cascade of failure and no matter what you do or how hard you try or how good you are, they all come crashing to the floor. I'm pretty sure everyone with ambition has gone through the same thing. I have several times. As hard as it is to admit (especially in front of a quarter million people) that you can't do it all, it's important to take the opportunity to distill your life into what really brings you joy. You're on the right path and I know you're preparing a place of peace for your future self. Once this turmoil is all over and we get back to some semblance of normalcy, you're going to be stable, happy and ready for the opportunities that come your way.

Anne you are an AMAZING woman that can do anything!!! you set your mind to. Try not to let your dyslexia stop you from accomplishing your goals. Don't let it be a crutch or an excuse to not be the kind of person that we all know that you are. I hope that you are able to make the little things that are trying to get you down become a success story. Like I said before you are an AMAZING young woman who can do what ever you set your mind to!! May God bless and protect you!!! Thanks for sharing and God bless

Hey Anne, you know I started following you after watching you explaining how to use a jack plane and thinking your name was really clever. I'm a "master of none" myself, and perhaps we share some of the same weird, complicated, beautiful, painful, glorious mental health issues... like you I've also struggled with "succeeding" my whole life (despite coming from a pretty privileged background), and seen life come crashing down quite a few times. I also LOVE the feeling that I can do anything and everything and the world is mine for the taking, all I need is to reach out and grab! Then I do, and I stumble, and well, you know how it is. I think for people like us, one of the hardest, most painful yet most crucially important lesson to learn is that... well, not everything is possible. I know that will sound even super triggering maybe. It's such a part of my identity and core values. But it also means I so so often set myself up for failure. I'm learning through all my own tribulations in these last couple of years that it comes a time when this wonderful carefree attitude needs to mature, lest we continue on the same cycles. Cycles that end up chipping away at that attitude, wounding us inside little by little. But the amazing news is that letting it mature doesn't kill it! It doesn't change us fundamentally, doesn't break our spirit. It just lets us face our dreams with that much more clarity. Not everything is possible. But that doesn't make what IS possible any less wonderful. :) I hope you find a good journey of healing and growth, taking care of and loving yourself, and find happiness in all that is possible in this amazing world of ours.

I hope nothing more than happiness and joy for you Anne. Having followed you for years I have gotten to see so many fun projects you do. You have inspired me and taught me so much and made me think about things a little differently. Life is rough and I am thankful that you and Adam kept it real and didn't hide the ups and downs from the world. So many people choose to stay locked away with their feelings and the troubles they face. I want to see you, Anne, succeed in your business and your dreams. I want the School to open soon! I want you and Adam to make it, you guys both deserve it. And mostly, I want you both to be happy. Your videos make me happy everytime I watch one, whether it's when they are released and I watch right away, or when I go back and watch some from the Seattle days through now. Keep your heads up, have fun, and continue working hard for what matters. Much Love!

{virtual comforting hug} I'm over 60 😬 and one of the few things I'm pretty sure of us that NONE of us make it thru without at least a couple major transformative crises, brought on by our own choices and THINGS. But please remember that - in the long run - it turns out to have been necessary to evolve. It SSSUCKSSS going thru the swamp, but eventually you'll find yourself on firmer ground and able to move forward. It may not be exactly what you imagined but later you won't be able to imagine it being any different. Read (or listen to) Transitions by Wm. Bridges. Sending love from someone still finding a path. ♥️

I just found you on This Old Makers tv and I have to say that you are such a beautiful hard working young lady!! So here is my pep talk..from a mom. I am sure you have heard this before but here I go anyway. Your husband looks like a really good guy from over here and the fact that you have music, wood crafting, building a school (wow!) is so challenging but fruitful in your marriage. You have really put yourself out there and perhaps learned things that few people will ever know about life and themselves in these adventures. Brave girl. That is actually beautiful to watch but no one expects you to keep up that pace. It is normal to have to adjust your expectations of yourself and your husband as you get older. It is really okay and necessary to build a long loving marriage. Ephesians 4:2: “Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Patience and forgiveness of yourself and others is key. And just because you have some limitations (we ALL do) please don't be hard on yourself or feel like you are a failure. Let go of perfectionism and hold onto what you have learned. I do see you doing that but sometimes a reminder doesn't hurt when we are driven to do something big. I guess what you lacked was an experienced building project manager (that takes money of course) to put together a reasonable budget and timeline, but you know, you learned that the hard way and a lot of our best lessons come from the hard way. We are just people. The outcome was amazing and your school project blessed many around the country to participate and help. So wonderful. Those friendships are invaluable. The fact that you talk about your feelings in constructive ways with others and your husband is such gift. Continue that and give him time to express his feelings. It is easy to crowed out quieter people without meaning to. I have been married 42 years to the same great guy. Certainly bumps along the way, a lot of lessons, but God has blessed our lives with love for each other, children and grandchildren. I do hope that you and your husband slow down along the way to start a family while you still can. They will bring such richness and meaning to your life and marriage. God bless you. Karen

I don't typically comment on these types of videos, however if I may offer some unsolicited advice... it can be dangerous to measure yourself only by your successes. Life, the entirety of your life, should be a journey of learning and growth, and you simply cannot learn and grow without failing. I also tend to start and not finish many projects, but I do not think any less of myself for that, in fact I find that I'm encouraged in most of those cases by my bravery in trying something I know I have a good chance at failing at. Facing fears and battling through them is part of that journey of learning and growing; one thing we may learn on that journey is that we might not be as good at all the things we want to be good at. But don't let that one facet of a otherwise complex tapestry of a life be the defining factor. You (and me) are more than the sum of our successes and failures. I may start and not finish some projects, but I'm also kind, generous, and I'm a great father to my children whom I absolutely adore.

This is very relatable. I think you have (had) a deep rooted fear of failure and not being good enough. One way to heal it is to fail and realize it’s ok and that you are good enough. You were a tough cookie to crack as you were working 100 hours to avoid failing and most people would have crumbled way before. But sound like you got through it and you will get back to the joyful you. One thing at a time and finish what you start is the best way to stay present.

Failure is just part of life’s lessons. The important part is to not give up and keep going.. you having this conversation with your audience just makes your channel that much more real. And it will allow people to understand if you’re off in someway. They will be aware of what’s going on I would more understanding because they have the necessary insight. Keep going I hope it all works out for you.

I’m a big fan of Anne of All Trades and love watching your videos but have cut back some on the time I spend watching creative videos. I have went from being a getter done person to watching other’s working hard to accomplish their projects. During the last three years I went from having two or three projects in my mind and in sketch form to having 8-10 in different stages. Sketches, a lot old drawings of materials, to parts being cut out to half assembled or projects. Your video sounded like you were talking about me. Recently I started stopping the world to spend some time with my wife, which includes time to let her ramble. I selected a project of building a work bench for a friend’s garage and that’s it until it’s done (except the last three days I have been doing spring cleaning of my horse barn). Monday and Tuesday next week it’s work bench until it is done and delivered. Next it’s a new storage cabinet for our home office. Not getting anything completed and having all these half done projects laying around is depressing and self defeating. Good luck and remember look through the winds, not in the rear view mirror. Tammy first the other things.😘
