HEY GUYS... in those low-draft, low-freeboard jet boats *you can do something in Key West that almost no other boat can!* *You can cut right across the middle of the island!!!!* *INSTRUCTIONS:* From Cow Key Channel go all the way down *The Riviera Canal,* past the 11th street boat ramp. Slow down as the foliage gets very thick. From here on the only other boats you'll see are kayaks. The canal will make a 90-degree bend "following" Venetian Drive. The physical impediment that keeps most normal boats from traversing this waterway is the really low bridge where the canal passes underneath Flagler Avenue, but you won't have any problem at all in those boats. There's a *pedestrian walkway* that crosses the canal on Staples Avenue, but again you've nothing to worry about. Keep following the canal as it passes under North Roosevelt and bingo, you'll exit on the other side of The Rock!!! It's like having an interstellar wormhole right in the middle of Key West!

A damn sure lot of "Big Ocean" dreamers on a big dream mission have never returned. And the mysteries are usually all that was left in their wakes. Respect big water or simply get lost, as when surrounded by nothing but choppy deep water, even with a friend along, it can be rather lonely. Death can come in the blink of an eye when under powered, and water weighs 6.5 lbs per gallon and can feel like concrete when big water slaps you upside the face saying "Respect meeee!"

Its rough because the boats are so short they cant cover the wave peaks, the boats dipping in between the waves. Going faster allows the boats to skip across the wave peaks better. The more you know.
@vandersgarage46823 жыл бұрын
Being short is the least of why they are so rough in waves and choppy conditions. Those boats have very little deadrise and no matter how fast you go it isn't going to change. The boats aren't designed for it. If they had a lot more deadrise it would smooth everything out a lot.
@robcooper31713 жыл бұрын
Standard deadrise for any offshore capable boat, is usually 21 to 26, then being light weight also a big down fall.
@vandersgarage46823 жыл бұрын
@@robcooper3171 That 21 to 26 is measured at the transom. For good performance in bad conditions you want that 21-26 to transition into 48-50 degrees of deadrise at the bow. That is where the good ride comes from. The front half of the hull is what takes the brunt of the impact and where the deadrise is needed most.
@robcooper31713 жыл бұрын
@@vandersgarage4682 I totally agree, but one thing to note not all manufacturers will list all the positions of deadrise, just know from experience if the transom falls in that angle typically it will have a nice smooth bow entry. Provided that it is a V-hull
@kennethh.5663 жыл бұрын
If you try to skip on the wave tops then impeller cavitation becomes a big issue for drive train reliability. Allowing the rpm's to flare/jump between each wave top repeatedly for hours straight would not be very good. If you watch just about any vessel running high speed offshore the captain is constantly having to work the throttle to avoid rpm flares as the prop/impeller loses it's bite in the water when hitting the trough between each wave. In such small craft as Cleet and Chad are running it would be very difficult to keep up the required throttle rhythm needed to protect the drive train from cavitation. You basically lose all your momentum because your off the throttle so much. You can hear Cleet trying to manage/avoid cavitation several times in the video...it's especially tough to avoid in small jet powered watercraft in wavy conditions.
