Nice little nod to Orion there. I obsessively tried to get the tone for that song when I was in high school like two decades ago, but I always found a more mid heavy tone with slightly dialled down gain suited my playstyle better. The tone on their early albums worked well because not only were they very percussive but also incredibly precise. Great video! I'd also be really interested if you could replicate the really smooth and rich lead tones Kirk gets on Orion. I've never managed to replicate them. There's a similar effect on the pre-solo on My Friend of Misery. I'd kill to be able to figure it out. Edit: I figured out the My Friend of Misery, it's just harmony in perfect fourths with a flanger. Bomb.

Taylor, have you heard of Lamb Chopper? He's another Metal KZbinr who IMO accurately recreates the Metallica sound from various periods and other bands as well, not even using the same gear might I add! He has really good ears and gets 95% of the way there using what he has. Not trying to be a dick, but I'm shocked Sweetwater asked the Death Metal guy to do a Metallica rig video instead of the guy well-known for Metallica rig videos... 🤘💀

The joy's of being a musician chasing gear, and while others say you don't need more guitars/amps they will never understand and that's ok. Also You should do Kill em all or a Dark Angel tone vid. Glenn Fricker's research said the cab was the 4x10 with the GT10-65 from Celestion. Also, you have to consider their tone is going to sound different in isolation compared to what they sound like in the mix. Also, Metallica uses stereo separation and dual/quad tracking, which will modify the sound further. I can attest that my rig sounds much different with the MIMIQ Doubler with just one dub (more dubs just sounds super "phasey") than without. It also helps to cut off the speakers at 10Khz to get rid of the chaotic hiss and buzz that steps on the main frequencies.

You're 100% right - Gear affects playing. I used to fight that notion until I spent a lot of time learning Setzer-y/RHH type rockabilly leads on a Gretsch hollowbody. I can, of course, play that same stuff on a Jackson Dinky..they're both guitars in E. Feels strange though; and I'm just going to give in to weedily weediling on it. People don't taste coffee and crave tacos.
