Speaking as someone who has gardened their entire adult life, I cannot BELIEVE how much you got done! Given the weather you had, it's incredibly how much you cleared out. And what kept going round and round in my head was "she is so FIT!" - because, girl, no way could I do what you just did! Landscaping a backyard is more the work of months, not one weekend, so the progress you made was incredible! Well done - and - looking forward to seeing where you land with it!

Tips from an experienced gardener: 1. Weeds are easiest to pull when the ground is fully saturated and the roots are slippery. Get yourself some mud boots and go out the morning after a big rainstorm. 2. If the weed has a long taproot (think carrot or dandelion) and you don't get the root, it's going to grow back and you're going to have to pull it again, so get the roots out as much as possible. 3. Do a tiny bit of research to find out what weeds in your area are noxious and which are harmless. Tackle the noxious ones first. Here in New England we have garlic mustard, which may sound delicious, but in addition to being prolific, the plant itself secretes chemicals into the soil that prevent other plants from growing. Also it's not as tasty as it sounds despite being edible. I have learned that edible doesn't mean tasty. 😝 4. You will get new weed sprouts the moment you disturb the soil. You've just brought thousands of weed seeds to the surface and now you've just removed their competition for sun and water resources. The best solution is to come back in and cover the soil as quickly as possible. You can lay down tarps or cardboard weighted with rocks to stop new weeds from germinating temporarily until you're done weeding that section (a section can take multiple days. You can also used tarps spread out in the yard to kill off the less pernicious weeds, though it won't work on all. You can also cover areas with cardboard and mulch which will smother a lot of weeds long enough to get a flower bed growing. Just move back the mulch and poke through the cardboard to plant an established plant, then bring the mulch back around your new plant. The cardboard will break down in a matter of months. Earth worms love cardboard. 5. Get to know which weeds are beneficial. Lots of people are picky about their lawns being only grass and see clover as a weed, but clover is a legume and processes nitrogen from the air and returns it to the soil, actually improving the soil that it grows in. So buying a bag of clover seeds to spread over your yard will both act as a ground cover to minimize growth of the "bad" weeds and also improve your garden soil for whatever you want to grow next. 6. Resist all temptation to add "weed barrier" either fabric or plastic because it doesn't stop the really aggressive weeds and only makes them harder to pull. On the flip side wood chips absorb water fast, keeping the soil beneath relatively cool and moist, thus making the weeds easier to pull, and natural, untreated wood chips encourage beneficial insects, mycorrhiza, microorganisms, and earth worms that will break down the chips into a rich loamy soil within just a few years, but they can't do that if there's weed barrier between the chips and the soil. (Also wood chips are so absorbent that they will fix any place in your yard that doesn't drain and just becomes a mud pit every time it rains). 7. Learn to identify poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac, and any other plants in your area that cause skin rashes and eliminate them by pouring boiling water both on the foliage and directly into the root system. (Hint: the roots of most plants extend to their "drip line", i.e the outermost edge of the leaves where the rainwater collects before dripping down onto the soil.) the plants may grow back at first, but they will be weaker and easier to kill with another round of boiling water as soon as you notice new growth. I'm sure there are local gardeners in your area that can be useful resources, and you may even get free plants out of the deal because the best and most ambitious gardeners will need to dig and divide their perennials occasionally and often trade or give away the excess plants to other gardeners, so find local groups and make friends. Also you can probably get free seeds at local seed swaps. All gardeners were inexperienced at one point and most of us are super excited to share knowledge, resources, and even old tools that we bought upgrades for. We want to make you one of us! Seriously, even the rare curmudgeonly gardeners are usually pretty helpful. They might just take a little longer to decide if you're dedicated enough to be worth their time. Sorry this was long but hopefully it's helpful to you and anyone else who read this far. 😅🍀🌱

For the beds, put several layers of cardboard down under your wood chip mulch to help dampen the weeds.

You got a ton accomplished! Weeding is hard. I’m a Horticulturist and my few words of advice: Water those Lilac Bushes every 3 days. Give them a good soaking at the roots. After you get the weeds removed, put down seed ASAP and a barrier of some sort to hold in the moisture and keep the seed where it needs to be. Then make sure to keep the seed moist but don’t drown it. Gardening is a fantastic workout and you would be surprised how much toning and weight loss you’ll experience. Have fun with it Bea! We are here for it all 😄🪴🌿🐾🦮🐈⬛💪🏻☕️🌾🌺🌼🌻🥀Our Middle Son (at the age of 29) worked in our gardens an entire summer while he was quitting drinking and smoking. He is hooked on gardening now.

Girl, get yourself a tiller! Ain’t nobody got time for that many weeds. When I say get, I suggest rent. Also, get a 3 foot long level and use that to level the flower bed walls as you lay them. You’ll be happier with the results. Otherwise you’ll just be tearing down that flower bed in the future. Also, you should probably dig a six inch deep trench where you want the pavers and then put the concrete in that, so it’s not just on top of the dirt. Also, good work on everything! Hey! I'm an arborist and do plenty of environmental and landscape remediation work. You need to water your lilacs every other day if they aren't getting rain. You also need to cut the circling roots if they came in a bucket. Annuals also need water every other day in cool weather, every day in hot weather. I live in Northern New Mexico so we have similar water needs for our plants. Also...you could just get landscape fabric and lay it down, secure it with staples and get a couple of loads of bark mulch delivered. Easier than grass.

@Sparkleycat3 жыл бұрын
Only over tilling is bad for the soil, but she would only be doing it once to help get rid of the weeds. I weeded my front yard and my little square garden earlier today. Then decided I needed to get some black mulch to cover the faded mulch. Also bought some pink flowers for my front yard and 3 plants to finish filling my garden. I felt like I accomplished a ton today. 👏😎✌ I am sure you felt the same way. I enjoy watching your videos. You are hilarious Bea. 🤣

I love you Bea. You're a genuine person and you make me laugh. I feel like a creeper watching your life, but you're interesting and I like to see what you've been up to. I wish I was your friend in real life.

One thing I've learned about gardening is that if you have open ground, fill it with stuff you want or it will fill up with stuff you DON'T want. So, if you weed a huge area fill it with grass turf or seed asap or it will just fill back up with weeds! You made great progress, weeding is so hard x

When we first moved into the house we rent I legit thought the garden was all spoil. The weeds were 4 ft tall. I started to clean it up and found a paved area, decking, and a bbq. It was like archeology lol

When you showed your backyard, I was like 'oh shit, that's huge!' Then I was like 'oh shit it's huge, it's gonna take forever to clean up' lol.

Honestly though, it's taken me three whole days to clean my entire apartment when I thought it would only take me one... So I feel you on the whole underestimating the time it takes to do things lmaooo but we're both doing it and that's what matters

You're kicking those weeds butt, and love the shape of your flower garden. Looking good and the physical side of it is a full body workout.

Girl I give you props because landscaping is no joke! It’s back breaking work! And what you accomplished in so little time by yourself was excellent because you took it down to just dirt. It’s ready for you to lay sod down once you are done.

You're literally weeding your entire backyard, your shovel will have touched every inch of your yard by the end of this, so don't fret, it will take time!!

There has to be an easier way...I'm no gardener but maybe rototill it?
@MarisaAndChew3 жыл бұрын
@@lellsoffrell24 that helps it look good but the plants are all still there waiting for a rain and to take over again :( the easiest way would probably be weed killer... but she has pets and its just bad in general, next best would be to go and spray the whole yard with vinegar on a day that is going to be hot and sunny and let it kill the plant sbut this can take several applications and depending on the type of weeds, may not kill them at the root... :(
@teresaMpillars3 жыл бұрын
@@MarisaAndChew I think some of those plants have a tap root, which is what makes dandelion so resilient
@MarisaAndChew3 жыл бұрын
@@teresaMpillars lol yeah you break the dandelion off and think you've got it and the roots that are 4 feet down panic and send up a dozen new plants!! I leave them alone, they have a job and are the first pollen for the bees! But, I def understand wanting to remove weeds that are pokey for Douglas!!! My pup comes in covered in burrs but that's cuz he goes into the woods rather than staying in the more manicured safe areas! LOL dogs are funny... I am not going to weed the brush though! :D

I'm so impressed with doug's patience with you cleaning his feet. I've just given up on my backyard and mow the weeds. From a distance it looks sorta like grass. I don't have a doggo anymore though so i don't have to worry about thorny paws.

Pro tip, whenever you put something into the ground, SOAK it in water for at least 3 days. It reduces the shock of for the plant.
