I TRIED TO PLAY CAS AT TOP TIER... IT DIDN'T GO WELL! (SALTY) - F-14B in War Thunder

The F-14B in War Thunder is broken right now. The Radar Missiles won't lock so I decided it would be a good idea to take the F-14B into Ground Battles! :)
This turned out to be one of my biggest mistakes in War Thunder. As a CAS plane in Top Tier War Thunder you're subjected to all sorts of painful torture. Such as the Pantsir, Tor and many other SAM's. What's worse is, Helicopters have an insane ability to shoot you down.
In this video, I played 5 games back to back and just show you what happened! As raw as it gets! OddBawZ gets Salty.

My guy. The pod is on the right wing. You keep losing lock because you roll right which puts the fuselage between you and your target. Roll left so that way you can evade and keep the pod in sight of your target

the problem isn't him rolling left or right, its when he goes inverted which you need to do to dodge the incoming

@@12733severy pod has a gimbal limit. Pods also can’t illuminate a target through the aircraft it’s on. Going inverted will at some point cause the laser to reach the gimbal limit and lose lock, but he’s also lost lock without going inverted as well because he’s always putting the plane between the pod and the target

Yup. In Abrams gunnery, whether you pass/fail has a lot to do with how much time you spend exposed above the berm. The whole ideal engagement is supposed to be be turret-down observation -> advance to hull-down to fire -> reverse back to turret-down observation.

Keybind your Laser Designator to something that's easy to press. Whenever you roll out of gimbal limit it will automatically turn off but if you have it bought u can just turn it back on and the bomb will reacquire. A lot of those bomb drops were more than enough to be kills.

Hey Odd you should play the Strv m/42 EH, it has a 75mm gun with more explosive filler then an IS-2, at a BR of 2.7. It also has -15 degrees of depression so I think it would be a fun little vehicle to play.

That's why there's a shortcut for the laser. You could have done kills very easily in your video just turne the laser back on. 🤣 PS: 31:28 Unlike the D Maverick, the A and B Maverick do not lock with IR but with black and white contrast. That's why they don't work in heavy rain or at night. However, the A Maverick only locks and tracks at about 3.5km. More or less depending on the size of the object to be locked. The B Maverick has a lock and tracking range of approximately 7km and the D has approximately 12km. Since the A-7D only has A Mavericks, it's no wonder you can't track on a 9km range like at 26:10

Yeah that happens sometimes when the laser goes off and you got to fly horizontally against SPAA so that they can’t easily train their missile on you. Flying Mach 1.1 or 1.2 with flare and chaff will make it harder for them to get you

Mavericks in general are complete garbage. the IR mavericks are slightly more usable but its still a 50/50 if they even do damage. B mavericks are supposedly missing the low zoom lens from what i understand, and in general they need to remove the 6km limit on target tracking for them. Theyre practically useless until you're well within gun range or stinger range.

@@fire_drake12.arc.24 As I already said, the B track from almost exactly 7km and the D at about 12km. But the D are useless unless you have a Laser optik because they dont have zoom whatsoever. But if you have a Zoom like on the Harrier GR 7 you can do lots of dmg. The only reason they sometimes don't do much damage is because they don't have a tandem charge or because the HEAT beam is swallowed by modules like the breech. But if that doesn't happen, they do very good dmg.

top tier needs even larger maps, more players in a match and longer matches pretty much. and artillery players need a better long range mechanic, so they can take potshots at spaa at 5 km +, 30v 30 or larger matches with 3 central caps and two on each side that turn into spawn points when you get ab or ac and a nuke at 4000. would be more kool ja, maybe just throw in a couple of gamemode spesific universal backups for extra spawns and make them sp free for one type of ground vehicle each. maybe it would be more fun then for all types of players.

You have to use the GBU-24 Paveway III's that have IOG (Internal Optical Guidance) which allows you to drop them like a standard GBU. But they have their own onboard guidance system that work the same way mavericks do by using their own laser and tracker.

I actually had the opposite experience. Yes it is ridiculously slow, however that's its advantage as by the time I got to the battlefield I was able to take out 2.5 bases, and maybe kill a straddling plane. In about 50% of my games I was either number 1, or in the top 3. This plane allowed me to unlock, F4C, F4F, F100D, F105, F104 and currently working on the F5E. Bear in mind that I really only started using this plane during this summer extreme event as I was planning on getting both the tank and the jet, which I did. I had this plane fully spaded after a week, and that's only because I started using the 105 to speed up my mission score. I spaded the A-7k because I wanted the TV-guided munitions to use in GRB games.

when the target gets out of the pod's line of sight it stops lasing but it stays locked on it's last known location. when you get the target back in the pod's line of sight you need to re-enable lasing for the bomb to start guiding again which is a keybind you have to set

Unfortunately locks aren't required. They can be very helpful but very good players not only won't lock you they won't even have their radar on. It is entirely possible for a SAM to kill you with literally 0 warning.

I swear, Z-19's / KA-50/52 pilots just somehow either get 100% ignored or killed instantly on spawn. More the former for me in my experience, just bad teammates not paying attention or refusing to play a "support role" or go in CAS and destroy them. Ty-90 and 9M39 are almost impossible to dodge as they have this NACK to fly thought flares and hit you anyway.

AAMs with ECCM are completely flare resistant. The thing is that majority of these missiles have fairly short guidance time and around 10G overload so it's not uncommon for supersonic jets to dodge them by accident.

You can reaquire laser lock, just set leaser activation buttin in controlls

If you stop lasing the target for the bomb you can begin lasing the target again using a key bind called "Toggle laser designator" it won't work 100% but give you a quite decent chance of delivering the bomb, I am also not sure if this works on the f-14b as I don't have it, but you can try it out. (The green circle in the red square shows you that you are lasing the target)

massive tip for top tier CAS, just use fire and forget missiles like the K29T/TD and AGM65s (D variant is the best), or fire and forget bombs at least then use the laser guided things after you destroyed all the SPAA, if you don't have any fire and forget weapons at least use laser guided missiles because they will reach the target faster, but at that point honestly i prefer just using dumb rockets or guns to clear the SPAA.

When I play the F14B in ground RB. I instantly turn around and CLIMB try to get 15+ km away and 20-30k ft high than turn back and find a target. The even the pantsir rockets struggle getting that high that fast so you can sometimes outrun them typically I’ll get 2 bomb kills in a good match 4+. But the Russian bias is strong

I tried this precisely, only to get immediately smashed by R27ER. Next match the same thing happened, as I got locked up by a spawning Russian jet. So I zoomed to the deck and immediately ate a YT missile from a Chinese Heli. I can’t. I just can’t. It takes the GBU a million years to fall on target from that range, even if you have some speed. MiG27K is still king of top tier CAS, just because it’s munition flies incredibly fast and packs enough explosive.

I do great in the f14b the only aa you have to worry about is the tor

I am in the same boat with not bringing any planes to top tier. It's just not fun anymore.
