Jay, I watched this, immediately went on Amazon and got the 1000W overnighted, and just now installed it with zero issues. Cable management in my 4000D case is now perfect. My new 4070 Ti now has the correct native connector, and I don't care about the slightly different sleeving. THANKS for your timely publishing of this video! Absolutely. Without the HDD cage, there would be plenty of room for the PSU cables. However, the downside would be that they are less hidden in that configuration. I imagine when Cablemod makes custom cables for the Shift family of PSUs from Corsair, it's going to have pretty unique cable runs in certain cases. Possibly to the point of having to shorten one side of the cables in certain runs. With the number of O11 case builds, it's likely that they're going to have to think a little differently about that. Synergy gave Jay those special short run cables for his powerboard that had half one length and half slightly longer/shorter (depending on where you start) and if the cable runs are anywhere as short as that, it's gonna affect the cable flex.

Cablemod might make 90 degree angle custom cable plugs to make sideways runs easier.

@@KayDizzelVids I was thinking about this while watching the video. It's a good concept and as Jay points out, I'm happy that companies are "innovating", even if it's something as "trivial" as moving the connectors from one side to another. A lot of case fitting issues would disappear if they had 90 degree cables instead of "regular" ones.
@xpyr

The end of cables for a modular power supply are unique for that PSU and are not standardized between different brands, and even different models from the same company. So I doubt Cablemod would do that considering it would at worse, be only for that PSU, and at best, be for a range of models from that same company. You could kill your PSU if you don't use a compatible cable with the PSU. It's why when ordering replacements, you need to specify the model and not just the brand.
@disguiseddv8ant486

I don't understand why you think that there would be an issue with Cablemod custom cables for the Shift (when released) when Cablemod have their 'Custom Cable Configurator' for buyers to select from for each cable that ranges from 150mm to 1000mm. This is on the buyer and not Cablemod to decide the cable lengths for their particular case. There's nothing to think about on Cablemod end! And also, it's "Singularitycases" who supplied the Powerboard and their own custom cables design. But why would you bring up Singularitycases custom cables when it's an minority small amount of PC builders that would be concerned about the cable flex of their 100mm 24pin/EPS cable?

If you're like me with an O11D Evo and don't use the drive cage, you can take it out and that gives you that entire upper section to cable manage the cables coming out of the unit. That is why I have been considering one of these new Corsair PSUs because my current unit has the standard "out the back" cabling, and it gets awfully tight with cable management. I mean it works and all, but you have to get a bit creative. So I do like this idea. Although, it would definitely be a case by case situation with it - as you demonstrated. He came into this fairly certain that he'd have all sorts of problems, but by the end, he gave the idea his endorsement because although he's OPINIONATED, he's also very open-minded. The O11 allows you to mount the PSU with fan facing towards the outside or the inside of the case, I think it will be fine lol. The fan will face the inside of the case but that back section has so much room that it should still have ample airflow
@Kupkaik
@Kupkaik Жыл бұрын
@@TheOriginalFaxon In an o11, if you mount it with fan side out, the cable ports stick up. This limits you to only being to mount this in the bottom most slot of an o11 but leaves the cables going upwards into the hard drive cage. I would rather mount my PSU at the top with the cables facing down, fan facing out, but that's not an option with this PSU. I could mount it at the bottom of the case with the cables facing upwards but not even that works for every build. I hope corsair adds more options for the shift series so alternative cable directions are available. Mounting at the top with cables going down would be more ideal for my build.

@@Hagop64 If you look at your case's little metal panel that opens downwards, the one below the glass panel, it has 2 metal plates screwed to it on the inside. I had to unscrew those in order to make some room for the cables to bend and even then it was difficult to fully close the panel until the magnets made contact. The worst offender was the main motherboard cable. I had to unstick the individual cables from each other a bit in order to plug in both connectors. The actual panel is a bit bent outwards in the middle for me right now due to the cables being cluttered inside so I'm guessing I need to find a better solution to manage them.

On the torrent case I’d get a small piece of rubber or plastic tube and cut a slit in it to slide over the edge of the metal and that will make a sort of grommet. I have done this a lot as a diesel mechanic using a piece of airline tubing so when running electrical wires along frames or in dashboards to keep from having the wires damaged and shorting out. There is a little wiring hack for any time worries about damage. You can also put a couple of strips of tape to do the same. I’d use electrical tape if going this route. The glue on electrical tape is less sticky and will have a less of a chance of peeling paint unlike duct tape

I got this power supply one afternoon when mine died, didn't notice it had the connections on the side until I unboxed it. When I tried fitting it my case didn't have an opening large enough for the cables so I took my angle grinder and lengthened the opening by about 6 inches, then after an hour of filing I painted it and it was ready to go. So far I'm happy with the design made the bottom look a lot cleaner and it's pretty easy to work with.

@JayzTwoCents with the Corsair Crystal Series 680X case you don't want to use this power supply at all. You can put it in without the cables but I doubt, that you will with the cables. The case is divided into two compartments and where the one with the motherboard has a normal width of 22cm, the other one for drives, power supply and so on is far smaller. So the power supply is laying on the side with its fan pointing to the side. Above the power supply are directly the drive cages. That is no problem, as the cables would face down. But you have not much space down. If you remove the 2,5" drive cage below the power supply, which is also use as rest for the supply, you would only have 4cm below the drive and you would have no chance of changing any cable (adding or removing) without completely remove the power supply and it would be a very tight fit down there. You can get the supply with cables in there, but the handling is horrible and you give up the space below the supply, that I personally used to stow away some of the longer cables, as there is enough space for 3 x 3,5" and 4 x 2,5" drives above the power supply.

Interesting idea from Corsair. Nice to see something different- whether it’s a good idea or a bad idea, innovation in design comes through trial and error. From the perspective of an audio engineer to overcome the few issues we saw I’d do one or each: 1) Electrical tape on solid edges of the chassis to prevent Insulation tear. 2) Electrical tape on wiring at the bend points at the power supply end to create support for cable cornering, and minimise the rate of damage from bending and re-bending over time/multiple builds. 3) Measure and cut wires for custom lengths. Your mileage (and cabling) may vary 😂

Don't know if anyone has mentioned it but what about right angle cables? With the way they plug into the power supply, you would have to have at least 4 sets of right angle cables depending on which way you want to run them..

According to Corsair you actually _can_ use the 12+4 pin with a 3070 Ti FE or higher. It won't work on a 3070 FE or lower because of how the port is positioned (the backplate blocks where the 4-pin would go), but 3070 Ti and higher have an angled port. According to corsair the 12 pin is the exact same spec, the 4-pin sensor simply allows for more features and higher power throughput. They said if it detects the 4-pin isn't plugged in, it reduces the max power to 450w, which is more than enough for all 30 series GPUs if I recall correctly. I asked a Corsair rep before I bought it, so this clarification comes from them. I will say though, I love this power supply. Also, either side of the cable is a different size so you automatically know which side goes into the PSU and which side goes into the motherboard components. The cables also seem thinner, I guess due to a lack of in-cable capacitors, but this allows for easier cable management. Corsair also told me that "universal extension cables" that work with other PSUs should technically work with these cables as well, but I didn't want to buy extensions. I'd rather wait for them to release whole sleeved cables for Type 5 Gen 1. Extensions are always risky business.

I think the one side design of this power supply could be overcome with swappable side plates. You'd have a large bus bar card edge like we use in the server space on either side of the PSU. On the side panel with the connectors you'd have a socket for the card edge, a large 12v plane on the top, a large ground plane on the bottom and a smaller 5v plane. 4 screws would hold it on and you could easily swap the sides.

Honestly, this would seem to work well in a Corsair Graphite 380T (old niche case I know) with a little modding of making a cutout on the side where the cables come out on the support plate. This way it's easier to put a high wattage PSU in and still being able to use your 3,5" bays instead of using a SFF PSU. There is quite some dead space in the case on that side that it might be worth it depending on how far into the chassis the plugs extend.

Really REALLY glad that this PSU exists as an option. It's a pretty niche piece honestly, makes more sense to purchase if you're going to get custom length cables because man you could REALLY clean up the wiring with this PSU + custom length cables. But a bit of a hard bargain at that price for just your standard out of the box PC build. Kinda like Phanteks's dual system power supply, albeit probably with a much bigger market lol. I'd like to see more niche-oriented products like this, but it's understandable why these sorts of things are rare; small markets lead to really expensive low volume products. But man they can open up some great possibilities.

I sold my old Antec 1200W PSU a few years ago, and that was huge. probably as big as PSUs got in those days (10+ years ago). nice to see the 1200W reducing form factor size just a tad, however with those different sized cables running from the PSU, I can see a lot of gnashing of teeth because people don't like change with PC building, even when some 'creative-type' at a company does. as for the PSU fan, I still have my old HX-750i from 3 builds ago, and I never hear it spin, because it doesn't. it works, but only on startup, for one second. it's never been run hard enough to warrant fulltime duty, and I game and edit videos so it does get put through its paces.
