Even if it doesn't improve cable management as such, being able to easily get at the connectors when say adding a hard drive or any upgrade requiring power cable, so much easier than having to dig about or doing a full rewire. @@Njazmo lol i get what you're saying but he's also saying with the rats nest of cables even if you don't care about how it looks it's still a pain to get to the connectors on the PSU or to add mechanical HDDs if you need too since the cables take up so much room. That can kind of be solved by getting custom length cables, which i did for my 011 Dynamic, but then when you change cases you have to spend another $150-$200 to get custom length cables for that case. Luckily I didn't have to do that. i posted about this problem on reddit and CableMod actually reached out to me and sent me free custom length cables, which came in over $200.

Gamer's Nexus actually did a deep dive into cable compatibility recently and it's actually a huge deal making sure you have the right cables. Which is kind of silly? They just carry current? But I guess it's a thing, so, it's not terrible that Corsair is starting to ensure that people are using the right ones.
@matasa7463
@matasa7463 Жыл бұрын
The problem is more complicated than that. First, you have 3 different types of voltages needed: 12V, 5V, and 3.3V. Each one of them is meant for different use cases, you'll need to have the right voltage being sent down the right power rails. If you take a look at the 24pin connector, you'll see there's a variety of different voltages at different locations on the plug. On the motherboard side, the pinouts are standardized, but the PSU side isn't standardized as of yet, so if you use the wrong cable, and you might end up sending 12V down the 5V or the 3V power rail, and something will go boom inside the PC.
@formbi

at least Corsair does have standardized pinouts among their power supplies (like the type 5 here), many companies don't even have that

@@matasa7463 it's a fire hazard when mismatch (using from different brand). I learnt the hard way, I fried my SATA SSD because I'm using different PSU cable for peripheral (that will connects to sata drive, fan, etc) and I thought it will compatible, but holy shit, it literally smokes my PC, the power SATA cable melts. my PSU is Seasonic, the culprit PSU cable is from Corsair. never ever mismatch PSU and its cable, even from same brand sometimes it's not compatible. for safety only use the modular cable that came with the PSU.

I don't understand why the cables don't have angled connectors. Considering the cramped space that's available for this even in huge cases, angled connectors to avoid needing to crush the cables in-between the power supply and side panel so much seems obvious.

Def a good option for certain cases. Some cases this flat out won't work in, like the Torrent as one example. My biggest issue though, is using micro-fit, which less robust than mini-fit and will be prone to issues with tight bends, but not be an issue with lower gauge wire. Looks like they're using 18ga. Not to mention, it's a PITA to sleeve for people like me, but that doesn't matter for 99.99999999% of people. And the reason it doesn't have 12VHPWR on the PSU side is because Corsair has stated they won't be using it on the PSU side, for a couple of reasons, even on their ATX3 PSU's. And honestly, no real benefit to having it on the PSU side TBH.

For me the issue with my side panel wouldn't be resolved with this. In trying to make things neat looking in the main glass panel area the 24 pin power cable of my Corsair PSU is too thick to run between the solid panel and the internal structure. Next time I take it out to clean things, though, I plan on re-evaluating my cable management. But I just bought the tower and PSU together as an upgrade and thought it was going fine until I went to put the panel on and had to get an extra set of hands to help me push things together, and now the panel bulges.

With good access to the ports on PSU, other possible improvements: 1. L-shaped connectors on the power cables that connect to the PSU side so that the protrusion is minimal and doesn't hit the side panel of chasis 2. Due above, the connector ports on PSU should be rotated 90-deg to facilitate the way the cables will bend left/right. The position of the connector ports can be optimized in a way to prevent obstruction between the installed cables 3. Motherboard ATX power connector ports should be facing sideways instead of upwards which could improve cable routing effectiveness and aesthetics

I thought this would be for a case where the PSU is mounted vertically like the Lian Li O11-family, but I think it’s on the wrong side, and other vertical PSU cases wouldn’t work, like the SSUPD Meshlicious. I feel like all you need to do is look at the past decade+ of case design to realize why nobody had really done this before. It's only fairly recently that the MAJORITY of case designs are based around the idea of PSU in the basement or tucked away behind the motherboard, while the rest of the components get to life comfortably upstairs. Years ago, it was always PSU up top, and you were lucky to have much room to run your cables behind the motherboard, let alone have ample space for EASY cable routing. Back then, "Different" layouts were considered more premium, and you definitely paid for it. Probably essentially the same reason why having connectors on the reverse of the motherboard never really made much sense until now. The whole "Behind the motherboard tray" area was always an afterthought until the past few years. Now that's basically a priority.

Was just thinking about this today. There's loads of vestiges of old PC case form factors that probably need to be rethought. Aside from how PSU cables are routed (A few manufacturers are putting Mobo Connectors on the back of the boards now too), hanging GPUs (many of which are the same size as motherboards now) from PCIe connectors seems pretty precarious as well. Need to shift towards making everything surface mountable like motherboards, or having multiple hole patterns to allow for multiple different mounting arrangements. But I know every component and ever case is different, so this might be a bit of a mess of standards. But it could help alleviate a lot of the big headaches of building a PC.

It might work pretty good for a rackmount case. for a Homelab/NAS build

The problem is cases have to be able to support corsair shift psu cables. If the back of the case doesn't have much space between the power supply and the panel, then it won't work great

From what I have read (inspirired by what I watch) I dont think you are supposed to swap cables for power supplies anyway (something out the pinouts not always being the same?)

i hope this cable management idea catches on, it's so practical!

Yeah, I can't believe it never took on before. I'll buy one of these for my next psu.

Larger gauge wires (ie thinner wires with less copper) coupled with high voltage/amp demands, yeah, that gonna be a fire hazard from any high draw GPU from Nvidia. Avoid.

would have been perfect if they used angle type connectors too.

In my case, it was a little tough to get to the modular connectors using an ATX power supply. I solved this by switching to an SFX power supply (plus adapter bracket), it's smaller and now much easier to get to the connectors. I don't know if my case would work well with the connectors on the side like this... maybe.

I circumvent the issue with the "last missing cable" you talk about at 5:00 by first hooking up all cables and do management for the most part and thenpop them into the PSU before sliding it into the case. Easily accessible should I forget one and ao overall cleaner build-look right of the bat

Maybe a solution for cases with short depth for psu if there is side clearance instead, easier to "solve" side clearance issues with a dremel as well.

I really like this idea. In the 011 Dynamic I think the benefit might be greater in the lower power supply position.

i am sure this was designed with the newer side mount psu cases which have that side facing up in the case IE the lian li O11 series

I have the O11 Dynamic and the power supply is at the bottom. Is it possible that you switched the hard drive bay with the power supply? I didn’t even know that was an option

I have never found it annoying to access power cables. If I'm doing something that involved with my PC what's the difference if it takes 1 or 2 minutes overall for a 20 or 30 minute upgrade/change?

Mine didn't come with two 8 pin pcie. But one dual 8 pin pcie and a type 5 pcie with the nvidia 16 pin cable configuration
I tried to prove this design was a failure... But then this happened.
